Audi has just launched its ‘product improvement’ enhanced A4/S4 range to the Australian market. Product improvement is just a marketing name for facelift, but to give Audi credit they have added quite a bit of substance with this mid-cycle update.
Headlining the news is word the latest S4 Avant will now be offered for sale in Australia; it satisfies AUSmotive’s appetite for fast Euro estates rather nicely. Powered by a 245kW supercharged 3.0 litre V6 it can reach 100km/h in 5.1 seconds and, if you behave, sips fuel at the relatively miserly rate of just 8.4l/100km. We’d really quite like one!
The S4 sedan shaves 0.1s and 0.3l/100km off the 0–100km/h sprint and fuel consumption numbers and is priced from $120,400. The stylish S4 Avant starts at $123,900.
Coming back to reality for a moment the entry level A4 1.8 TFSI ($52,700) has had its engine updated and now has 125kW/320Nm. That represents a modest gain of only 7kW, but a much healthier boost of 70Nm will bring noticeable real world benefits.
We do agree with Audi in their claim that the A4 2.0 TFSI quattro is the sweet spot in the range. Priced from $61,700 (sedan) or $64,500 (Avant) that’s where the smart money should go. Under the bonnet is the same engine found in the award winning Golf GTI and it produces 155kW/350Nm.
Audi has paired the Avant 2.0 TFSI quattro with a 7-speed S tronic transmission as standard equipment. Sedan buyers can choose from a 6-speed manual or the S tronic. For both body styles you’re looking at mid 6s to reach 100km/h and fuel consumption around 7l/100km.
Making the case for 2.0 TFSI quattro more compelling is its impressive list of standard equipment, which includes the Technik and Comfort packages. Those packages add things like Sat Nav, xenon headlights, front and rear park assist, electric seats, convenience key and more.
In addition to the models already discussed Audi offers a poor man’s S4 in the form of the A4 3.0 TFSI. It’s available in Australia as a sedan only and for your $93,400 you get 200kW in return.
Of course, diesel technology is well represented and Audi Australia has brought three TDI options down under: the 130kW 2.0 TDI ($57,900), the 150kW 3.0 TDI ($68,900) and a 180kW 3.0 TDI (sedan only, $88,000).

The new Audi A4 has made its debut in Australia, headlined by the introduction of three new engines to the range, a generous list of standard equipment and attractive pricing. The brand’s best-selling mid-size sedan and Avant are now an even more compelling purchase option for discerning buyers.
The sweet spot in the Audi A4 range has been made even more attractive: the 2.0 TFSI quattro sedan boasts a very generous equipment list, including MMI Navigation plus, Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, convenience key access, electric front seats and 18-inch alloy wheels. Equipped with either a manual or S tronic gearbox, this model is affordably priced, at $61,700 and $64,500 respectively.
The 2.0 TFSI turbocharged, direct-injection engine delivers 155 kW and 350 Nm of torque, the latter between 1,500 and 4,200 rpm. Paired with the six-speed manual transmission and quattro drive, it accelerates the A4 sedan to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 246 km/h. Its average fuel consumption is 6.8 litres per 100 km, which corresponds to 159 grams of CO2/km.
The entry point into the A4 range is also extremely well-priced: the A4 sedan 1.8 TFSI costs $52,700, with an all-new engine that drives down fuel consumption, while delivering the kind of sporty performance that the four rings are famous for. The 1.8 TFSI engine boasts direct and indirect fuel injection for maximum efficiency and accelerates the Audi A4 sedan manual from zero to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 230 km/h, yet it requires just 5.7 litres of fuel per 100 km on average – a CO2 equivalent of 134 grams per km. Consumption has been reduced by 18 percent compared with the previous-model engine that produced 118 kW.
The entry-level diesel model, the 2.0 TDI multitronic, boasts the lowest fuel consumption of the range, while still delivering enthusiastic performance. A peak torque figure of 380Nm is available to the driver from 1750 to 2500rpm (peak power is 130kW), which is enough to dispatch 0-100km/h in a brisk 7.9 seconds. This performance doesn’t come at the cost of fuel efficiency, though: the 2.0 TDI requires 4.8 litres to travel 100km on average. CO2 emissions are 127 grams per kilometre.
All A4s are generously equipped, but a Technik package available for the entry level TFSI and TDI model includes popular features like MMI Navigation plus, Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime driving lights and parking system plus (acoustic front and rear) for only $5300. A comfort package is also available, and an assistance package and S line package are optional for all models.
A new diesel engine to the A4 range is the 3.0 TDI 150kW multitronic, which provides even more performance, with 150kW from 3500-4500rpm and 400Nm from 1250-3500rpm. It reaches 100km/h from rest in 7.1 seconds, returning a fuel consumption figure of 4.9 L/100km and CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.
For the first time, the S4 Avant is available in this generation of A4. The 3.0 TFSI powers both the S4 sedan and the S4 Avant. The supercharged V6 engine produces a peak power figure of 245 kW and its mammoth 440 Nm of torque is available at engine speeds between 2,200 and 5,900 rpm. Audi has tuned its sound so that it is more acoustically powerful than ever. The start-stop system is standard.
The S4 models offer powerful performance. The sedan sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Just as groundbreaking is the consumption: the sedan requires just 8.1 litres of fuel per 100 km on average. Both models come standard with the seven-speed S tronic. It directs the power to the quattro drivetrain with the self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring. The sport differential is available as an optional addition.
