VIDEO: How to build a Porsche 918 Spyder

Porsche 918 Spyder production line

Porsche takes us inside the 918 Spyder assembly hall with this 11 minute video. There’s no voiceover. No overwhelming stats on performance or the number of parts used. Just the workers going about their job. It’s strangely hypnotic.

And what a car!

What kind of driver are you raising?

TAC parental role modelling TVC

The Victorian Government’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC) first made its name in the 1980s and 90s with shocking and confronting television commercials. Here’s a more subtle response alerting us to the example we set for children.

From the YouTube description:

The truth is that your kids learn more from your behaviour than you think they do.

Positive role modelling by parents of 5-12 year olds has the potential to have a huge influence on their child’s future driving behaviour.

The TAC has used this key piece of research to develop this, our latest campaign and the next stage of our long-term Parents and Road Safety Strategy. The goal of the strategy is to reduce road trauma for young drivers in their first months of solo driving and beyond.

Instilling safe driving behaviors and attitudes from a young age is key to achieving this goal.

VIDEO: Audi R8 V10 Plus review

MY16 Audi R8 V10 Plus

Audi has upped the ante with its second-gen R8 by releasing its most powerful version at launch. That’s the R8 V10 Plus, which produces 449kW/560Nm thanks to its normally aspirated and free revving 5.2 litre engine.

The current entry level R8 V10 is good for a still very healthy 397kW/540Nm, but when you can have more power, well, you take it!

Which is exactly what Dan Prosser from Evo has done. He reckons the first gen R8 was a wathershed moment for Audi, but was it a fluke, or is this new model even better?

The marvellous Miura

Lamborghini Miura

Dennis Varni is a pretty interesting guy. Prominent in the US hot rod scene he also discovered European cars and has spent a lifetime building and collecting all things automotive. One of his prized pieces is this Lamborghini Miura.

Speaking to Petrolicious, Varni says of his Miura: “It’s highly collectable, it’s exciting, because it’s unusual, it’s small, it’s exotic—it’s still exotic today. And it was significant in its styling.”

We couldn’t agree more. Enjoy the video after the break.

On the growl

Alexander Bermudez and his 964 911

Alexander Bermudez is a photographer and car guy. Actually make that Porsche guy. His 964 911 has been featured on Petrolicious twice now. The first time was back in 2013 in a static story and photoshoot; his own photos of course.

Bermudez’s 964 was nicknamed The Growler by one of his mates and when you watch this video you’ll soon learn why. This is a great clip. Not because there’s great technical detail; there’s none. It’s great because it captures the spirit and the simplicity of pure driving.

Watch Bermudez driving in the hills near his home. There’s no mucking about, just driving for driving’s sake.

This has also been captured well with Alexander’s own words: “Because it’s so light, it has the speed and acceleration you’d typically find in the water-cooled cars, and yet, because it’s slightly older and has automatic steering taken out of it, it has really good steering feel.

“The closer you get to the edge, it becomes more comfortable, because it’s telling you exactly what’s going on.”

Just how good is the Civic Type R?

Honda Civic Type R

The all-new Honda Civic Type R had an extremely long development cycle. It’s now been launched and has to go about living up to the hype Honda has generated.

Here Steve Sutcliffe from Auto Express takes the Type R to the tight Llandow Circuit in Wales to see how it compared with the Seat Leon Cupra 280 and the Renault Megane RS275 Trophy.

That’s all well and good, nobody would be surprised if the Type R was the quickest of that trio. But what if the Audi RS3 and BMW M3 are added to the list?
