Mercedes-Benz Australia have just announced a Manufacturer’s List Pricing (MLP) for the SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’ of $464,000. That might seem like a lot of cash to you and me, but it seems there is no shortage of buyers lining up for a dose of 420kW V8 goodness.
“The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has been extremely well received by our customers in Australia with more than forty orders already locked in,” said Horst von Sanden, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Cars in Australia.
“Despite the fact that the first customer cars have not yet arrived and with deliveries not expected until August the order book is filling fast.”
Of course, once you add delivery fees, stamp duty and so on to the MLP the bottom line will be heading towards that half million dollar mark. But there’s not many cars on the market these days that can boast the ability to head a field of Formula One cars.

Mercedes-Benz today announced Australian pricing for the stunning new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG “Gullwing†sports car.
The much-anticipated high-performance coupé has a manufacturer’s list price of $464,000.
Following its world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show last year, series production of the SLS AMG is now well underway in Sindelfingen, Germany – the largest Mercedes-Benz passenger car production plant.
“The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has been extremely well received by our customers in Australia with more than forty orders already locked in,†said Horst von Sanden, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Cars in Australia.
“Despite the fact that the first customer cars have not yet arrived and with deliveries not expected until August the order book is filling fast.
“Even in advance of the actual market launch, orders have considerably exceeded our expectations. This shows that the exciting design and extraordinary concept of our gullwing model precisely meet the taste and aspirations of potential customers.
“Given the impressive demand we are experiencing for this special car our stock allocation for 2010 could well be insufficient,†speculated von Sanden.
A new legend delivering exceptional performance
The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG dazzles with its purist design, intelligent lightweight construction and superior handling dynamics, and has already caused a sensation in the super sports car segment.
The new SLS AMG is nothing short of a masterpiece by its creators at Mercedes-AMG GmbH. As its first completely independently developed vehicle, this super sports car is the highlight in the company’s more-than 40‑year history. It shows that AMG has development expertise at the highest level.
The unrivalled technology package of the SLS is an alluring proposition: aluminium spaceframe body with gullwing doors, AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid-engine developing 420 kW peak output, 650 Nm of torque and dry sump lubrication, seven-speed double-declutch transmission in a transaxle configuration, sports suspension with aluminium double wishbones and a kerb weight of 1620 kilograms based on the DIN standard. This superlative combination guarantees driving dynamics of the highest order.
With a front/rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 percent and the vehicle’s low centre of gravity, this extraordinary combination guarantees performance figures at the highest level. The gullwing model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 317 km/h. A fuel consumption of 13.3 litres per 100 kilometres (combined cycle, according to ADR 81/02) makes it one of the best in its competitive segment.
The all-new SLS AMG’s manufacturer’s list price (MLP) of $464,000 provides customers with impressive value. It boasts an impressive array of standard equipment along with racing car-levels of performance.

The car looks better in real life than it does in photos, especially in pearl white. The problem I have with the car though is that it doesn’t feel all that special once you close the door and is inside the car. I felt like I was in a, err, Merdeces. Whereas look at the drama you get when you plonk yourself into a 458. Now that is epic. Having said that, I would consider the SLS in a few years as a used car. It’s a Mercedes, it will be quality.
