Nowhere man – part 1

2002 MINI Celebrity Challenge

In the build up to tomorrow’s Grand Prix here is a tale that will warm the hearts of most readers. It tells of the chance given to a regular guy, called Tom Browell, to participate in the celebrity race at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix. It’s a long piece so it’s been split it into two parts. It’s a lot of fun, though and definitely worth reading…

My fifteen minutes of fame begins

I arrived home on Sunday (17th February) to find an unusual message on the answering machine left by “Sherryn from Qantas corporate marketing”. I thought it was just someone doing a survey, but my wife Zoë asked if I had entered any contests. I remembered entering something on the Qantas web page, “To win a MINI, I think?” I called Sherryn back who said, “Do you remember entering a competition on the Qantas web site? You are one of five finalists.” I had to ask, “A finalist in what?” and Sherryn started to explain the prize: fly to Melbourne, participate in the MINI Celebrity Challenge driver training at Sandown raceway and maybe get picked for the celebrity race at the Australian Grand Prix. In any case, I’ll stay the week and go to the Grand Prix with corporate hospitality for two people. All the while, I’m giving Zoë the thumbs-up and she thinks I’ve won a new MINI.

VIDEO: MINI WRC promo

MINI WRC promo

MINI and Prodrive have been promoting their WRC partnership with this video at the Geneva Motor Show. They say the legend is back. It’s not clear if the Countryman-based racecar will be a success on the world rallying stage, but it is great to see MINI back in the game that’s for sure.

For the WRC’s sake, let’s hope the MINI is a good package. With the recent dominance of the mighty Citroën team and, now, only one credible challenger in Ford, the sport is crying out for more depth.

Production countdown begins for MINI Rocketman

MINI Rocketman Concept

It appears the funky little MINI Rocketman concept is set for production. The news follows comments from Ian Robertson, BMW’s sales and marketing chief, who said, “We are good at looking at history and interpreting a future for it.” Further reminding that most MINI concept cars do find a way down the production line at some stage.

Robertson also claimed, “The themes in the car are not just about a smaller Mini. Lightweight construction, and new types of components will go on to Minis. The BMW i-concept will be available to all members of the group.”

So, while the regular three-door MINI in hardtop and convertible form will remain MINI’s bread and butter, the future looks bright for a smaller city-car model line to further expand the range as the larger four-door Countryman has done.

Official MINI Connected demo

Internet communication is coming to the auto industry. Actually, it’s already arrived, and MINI is just one of the companies at the forefront of integrating their on-board infotainment systems with the wireless world. Here’s a brief demo of the MINI Connected system which comes to us thanks to MINI USA.

Watch the clip and let us know if you think such technology is a distracting fad or a required feature.

Oh, for the record, full MINI Connected internet capability is not available in the Australian market yet. Your local MINI Garage should have more info on when, or if, that may become available.

Autocar names top five road tests

Steve Sutcliffe, Autocar

Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar presents the top five cars from a database of 5000 road tests (video available after the break). On the list they have included an original 1959 Mini, a 1961 Jaguar E Type, a 1981 Golf GTI, a 1994 McLaren F1 and a 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

In the first recap, featuring the Mini, it’s interesting when Sutcliffe includes a couple of lines from the 1959 test; a shame, really, he didn’t do that for the other four cars.

Overall, it seems like a reasonable enough list, if a bit skewed towards British engineering. But, Autocar is a British mag after all. So, what would cars would you put in your top five?

Geneva 2011: MINI John Cooper Works S2000

MINI WRC

MINI and Prodrive are celebrating the Geneva Motor Show by presenting a race-spec version of the MINI John Cooper Works S2000. Even though MINI presented a WRC car at Paris last year, this is the best look yet at what the fully-fledged WRC car will look like.

The MINI WRC will differ slightly from what you see here, though, in that it will have a larger rear wing, a revised front aero package and will use plastic for the side windows.

Privately entered JCW S2000s will be making their competition debut at Rally Portugal and, there’s even one on its way to Australia. The MINI WRC will debut at Rally d’Italia in early May.

Also officially announced at Geneva is the new MINI Motorsport website, home to the WRC team. There’s more detail on all of these things after the break.

Making a faster and more reliable rally car is ‘really bloody difficult’

David Lapworth, Technical Director at Prodrive, has dropped in via YouTube to complement our recent update on the progress of the team’s new MINI WRC.

The 2011 WRC season continues next weekend with Rally Mexico. Meanwhile, Prodrive has just 67 days to go until their Countryman-based racecar makes its WRC debut on 5 May at Rally d’Italia.

Drive Thru: MINI Countryman Cooper S

MINI Countryman Cooper S

The new MINI Countryman; some strident MINI fans cannot warm to it. And they may never warm to it. Others are willing to embrace MINI’s move into four-door territory. Here at AUSmotive we’ve kept an open mind and, in photos at least, we reckon if MINI has to go forward by upsizing its range then the Countryman is a pretty good first up effort.

Now that the Countryman has arrived in Australia we can really begin to form a solid opinion. So, after seeing the car for the first time today, and enjoying a brief test drive, we’re leaning towards loving the love-or-hate four-door MINI. It’s not a full on love affair yet, but we’ve seen enough to warrant a second date.

We were granted time in a Countryman Cooper S fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission. Thanks to its 70kg weight saving over the All4 model, this is the fastest route to 100km/h in the Countryman range, with a claimed time of 7.6 seconds. The all-wheel drive version takes a further 0.3 seconds.

In truth, the Countryman Cooper S doesn’t feel that rapid. It’s not slow by any means and the 135kW 1.6 litre turbocharged engine, lifted from the regular Cooper S hardtop, is still refreshingly responsive, especially in lower gears. It’s economical, too, with a combined fuel consumption figure of 6.6l/100km.

We didn’t have enough time in the car to experience all of the Countryman’s handling characteristics in detail. However, we did learn that it is actually quite odd, at first, to be sitting so high in a MINI. Despite that, the Countryman still maintains a degree of the fun and lightness offered by its little brother. The laws of physics dictate the 1310kg Countryman Cooper S, with its 149mm ground clearance, will never match the now iconic 1140kg Cooper S for pure driving thrills. But, really, that’s not part of the Countryman’s brief.

VIDEO: MINI Rocketman Concept

MINI has firmly drawn on its 1959 roots with this promo clip on the new Rocketman Concept. It’s quite a smart and well made video, too. It will be very interesting to see how well the Rocketman makes its transition from concept into road car. Assuming, of course, BMW has the common sense to actually build the car.

There’s a bonus Rocketman vid after the break as well, with thanks to our friends at MotoringFile.

MINI launches Rocketman Concept

MINI Rocketman Concept

MINI has just sent images and information about this new Rocketman Concept into cyber-orbit. After the too-big-to-be-a-MINI Countryman, this little Rocketman creation really is a mini MINI. At just over 3m long it’s being described as a 3+1 seater. It’s actually around the same size as the “incredible” classic Mini.

This is a genuine city-car concept from MINI and with a target fuel consumption range of just 3l/100km it’s bound to be hit the right notes for fashion conscious urban types.

After the spacious excess of the Countryman, the Rocketman Concept is a great return to MINI being MINI. That is, a fresh, lateral thinking approach to a more tangible market space appropriate to the MINI brand.

The Rocketman will be on show at Geneva and is sure to be a hit with its funky opening doors and spectacular design details. There’s a few more pics and a detailed presser from MINI after the break. We’ll be back later today to update you with more images.

UPDATE: 28 new pics have been added after the press release.

VIDEO: Evo tests Citroën DS3 Racing against hot hatch rivals

Evo hot hatch test

Just in case we had forgotten Chris Harris spent a bit of time piloting a factory Porsche GT3 around the Nürburgring last year he is back wearing a team jacket to tell us how the Citroën DS3 Racing compares against its hot hatch rivals; namely the MINI John Cooper Works, Renaultsport Clio 200 Cup, Vaxhaull Corsa VXR and Volkswagen Polo GTI.

The clip gives quite a good introduction to each of the cars, even if the script pretty much follows expectations. Check it out after the break.
