Volkswagen Polo R WRC testing in Finland

A few days ago we brought you some video of Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia testing the Volkswagen Polo R WRC in Finland. New pics and video have come our way and it would be rude not to share.

After the testing Jost Capito, Volkswagen’s head of motorsport, said the team is on track for its 2013 WRC debut. At least two cars are confirmed for the opening race in Monte Carlo. Ogier will get the first, with the Jari-Matti Latvala rumour for the second getting stronger by the day.

There’s a small chance Volkswagen could enter three cars for the Monte, but reports of as many as four or five appear wide of the mark according to Capito.

“There is a scenario to get a third car at the start in Monte Carlo,” Capito told rallye-magazin.de. “But only if one has everything under control and if everything works the way we imagine and if we have enough experience in the team.

“Volkswagen is accustomed to success and is ambitious. But in contrast to the established teams from Ford and Citroen, Volkswagen cannot fall back on ten years of experience in the rally circus.

“The WRC is for our car, our technology and our team completely new territory. There are many tests ahead and many things that we will do to be even better. We work towards this. I think that we will have a competitive car in early 2013.”

It’s expected Volkswagen will confirm its 2013 driver line up at Rally Deutschland in late August.

VIDEO: Polo R WRC jumps for joy in Finland

Sebastien Ogier has been sightseeing in Finland recently. His employers, Volkswagen, were kind enough to pass on a Polo R WRC test mule as a means of transport. Luckily for us a few Finnish rally fans were on hand to capture the airborne hi jinx.

Also on hand for test duties was a Skoda Fabia S2000, which Ogier has been racing during the 2012 season. Like all of us, we suspect, Ogier is probably hoping Volkswagen might turn up to, let’s say, Italy or Spain at the end of the year and say, “Why don’t you take the Polo out this weekend Seb.”

Sebastien Loeb wins 2012 Rally New Zealand

Sebastien Loeb and Mikko Hirvonen completed a dominant 1-2 rally win for the Citroën World Rally Team in Rally New Zealand on the weekend. There was a minor fight with Ford’s Jarri-Matti Latvala on the opening day, but the rally soon became the plaything of the unstoppable Citroëns.

At least this time Loeb and Hirvonen were able to fight freely for the win. Mostly, after a good battle on day two, the team asked their two drivers to concentrate on the double podium in the closing stages of the event. With that came Loeb’s fifth win of the year and an ever tightening grip on the driver’s championship.

The eight-time world champion now has 145pts, which puts him 38pts clear of Hirvonen, with Solberg 55pts behind the leader. Unsurprisingly, with a 96pt lead over Ford, Citroën appears unbeatable in the manufacturers’ title race.

Speaking after the rally Loeb said he’s looking forward to a well earned rest: “We had to hold out to the end after an exciting two-day battle with Mikko. Once again, conditions were difficult but we managed to secure a one-two finish. I’m very pleased that I can go on holiday now with a comfortable lead in the championship! It’s true that the first half of the season has been fantastic, with five wins out of seven rallies.”

For his part, Hirvonen is ready to building on a steady opening to his Citroën career: “This is another good result for the team; it concludes the first part of the season, during which I have learned a lot. I am pleased with how the first seven rallies have gone. I have been fighting for the win a regular basis, and that feels good. I now have a fine collection of runner-up spots, so I’ll be going into the second half of the season hoping to claim some wins.”

The WRC goes into hiatus for all of July and returns for Rally Finland in August.

Prodrive: “We stopped looking for sponsors two months ago”

Further signs of decay within the WRC have been revealed by Prodrive executives in an interview on The Rally Show by iRally.

No surprise the root of the problems boil down to the lack of television coverage for the world’s premier rally category, as Dave Richards explained.

“We stopped looking for sponsors two months ago. It’s simply impossible at the moment. Even if you do find a sponsor and he is happy with your programme he will eventually ask about the TV coverage, media presence, audience figures and we just don’t have these kind of answers at the moment”, said Richards.

You’ll recall the official Prodrive–MINI partnership came to an abrupt end earlier this year, even though Prodrive still prepares the cars for the official factory entries, as well as their own team. Money, or the lack of it, was the reason back then and nothing much has changed in the subsequent months.

The current malaise the WRC finds itself in is quite disheartening. We don’t proclaim to fully understand all the reasons, or to be experts on how to put things right. We just know the WRC is made for TV—North One Sport, generally speaking, did a first class job—and the sooner some serious income can be generated by the sale of broadcast rights the better the sport will be.

Mikko Hirvonen unhurt after spectacular crash

Citroën World Rally Team driver Mikko Hirvonen and co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen have walked away without injury following a high-speed crash on Thursday. The pair were testing their Citroën DS3 WRC racecar in Tuscany, Italy, as part of their preparation for the upcoming Rally New Zealand.

A Citroën team member explained: “Mikko rolled a lot of times, the accident was high-speed. The most important thing is that Mikko and Jarmo are both OK. They are back at the hotel tonight. The test is finished.”

Amazingly, the crash has been dramatically captured on video (see below), where the person filming was just metres away when Hirvonen left the road causing his car to rollover a number of times.

Are we heading for a World Rally Crisis?

Yesterday’s bad news for the WRC that Nokia ended their sponsorship of the category has potentially been topped by new cash demands placed on race organisers by the FIA.

The 2013 WRC Calendar is expected to be ratified by the FIA when the World Motor Sport Council meets on 15 June; the same date the FIA is set to announce who will fill the void of promoter for the WRC. However, by 8 June all race organisers wanting to be part of the 2013 season have to commit to paying the FIA an extra €100,000 to cover the costs for timing, safety tracking and television production. If they fail to pay, then they will be deleted from next year’s calendar.

A person associated with a current WRC, but wishing to remain anonymous has been quoted by Autosport as saying: “We are angry about this. This does not feel right. Don’t forget, it’s not just the money we have to pay. Last year, with North One Sport [former WRC promoters], we got the timing and tracking for free when we gave rights for our television and we were paid €25,000 by NOS.

“So actually, we’re having to find €125,000. And this is on top of the €140,000 calendar fee we already have to pay. Suddenly, it’s more than a quarter of a million [Euros] to be a round. This is the complete reverse of what we had last year.

“I think if they [the FIA] expect everybody to sign and be happy, they are very wrong.”

Another unnamed organiser said: “Can the FIA guarantee we will have the best television station? Can they guarantee we will have many million people watching the sport around the world? And we don’t know what we will get for [timing and tracking] next season.”

For the last 10 years timing and tracking has been provided by Stage One Technology and it would appear organisers have been happy with their service. You can see why they’re asking the FIA for such assurances.

Nokia withdraws WRC sponsorship

Nokia ends WRC sponsorship

As the WRC forges on without its former promoter North One Sport it probably hoped a lucrative deal with Nokia could help to partly fill the void. Originally touted as a “ground-breaking new partnership” when the deal was announced in June last year—with promises of an exclusive mobile application, providing access to video footage, live standings and car telemetry data—Nokia has now withdrawn its support.

It’s understood the sponsorship was worth £2.5m per year to the sport and WRC Commission President Jarmo Mahonen says the news is a blow to the category.

“This is quite a big loss to the championship. We didn’t see it as just money coming in, Nokia was going to be a partner. It was a very good platform,” Mahonen said.

Nokia has been struggling itself with high hopes for its new Lumia 900 smartphone not exactly going to plan, when “a memory management issue was discovered that could, in some cases, lead to loss of data connectivity.”

In better news for WRC it’s expected they will announce a deal with a new promoter when the World Motorsport Council next meets on 15 June.

Sebastien Loeb wins 2012 Acropolis Rally

The unstoppable Sebastien Loeb has proved that once again after he won the 2012 Acropolis Rally by 40 seconds from his Citroën teammate Mikko Hirvonen.

While the end result makes it look like it was a dominant weekend for the Citroën team, that wasn’t really the case. Loeb started the final day just 10 seconds ahead of Ford driver Petter Solberg and a battle for the win loomed. However, Solberg, needing to apply the pressure, made an error and crashed out on the day’s opening stage. So, later in the day on SS20 when Loeb was slowed by a puncture he was able to remain reasonably calm.

Hirvonen had settled for third place in his mind, but was promoted to second place after Solberg’s retirement. It’s the third one-two victory for the Citroën team this year and it’s no surprise to see they enjoy a 73pt lead in the manufacturers’ championship.

Meanwhile, Loeb’s fourth win of the year has helped him to a 30pt lead over Hirvonen in the race for the drivers’ title. Incredibly, the win in Greece is Loeb’s 71st career victory in the WRC.

“We managed this race well, despite the constant pressure we were put under by our rivals,” said Loeb. “I never lost my cool at any point, even when we got a puncture, because I knew we would still have enough of a lead.”

VW Polo R WRC practising tarmac attack

Volkswagen has been continuing its development of the Polo R WRC on the sunny Spanish tarmac. This video was filmed recently and shows Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia having what seems to be a damn good time. Empty roads, no pressure of competition, just going as fast as you damn well can.

Our last update from Volkswagen was back in March. In the past when an unofficial video like this one has turned up official word and pictures have soon followed. We think the Polo R WRC looks great here in tarmac-spec and hope we get another update from Volkswagen very soon.

Sebastien Loeb wins 2012 Rally Argentina

Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena have added to their remarkable record with victory in Rally Argentina on the weekend. It is their seventh consecutive win in the event and their 70th WRC win overall.

The Citroën master pairing finished 15.2 seconds ahead of their teammate Mikko Hirvonen. The one-two result gives the French team a healthy 45 point lead from Ford in the manufacturers’ title race.

Although it is worth noting that half way through Day 2, when the Citroëns held a safe lead back to third place of around 90 seconds it was decided the leading pair should hold station. “I spoke to both the crews and they agreed that it was the best solution,” explained Yves Matton, Citroën Racing Team Principal.

Ford driver Mads Osteberg took the final podium step, over three minutes behind Loeb. Stand-in driver Ford Dani Sordo was on track for fourth place until he stopped and withdrew from the rally on the very last stage.

Loeb’s third win for the year puts him on 91 points in the drivers’ championship, ahead of Petter Solberg (73) and Hirvonen (70).

After the event Loeb summed up his feelings, saying: “It’s great to get back to winning ways after drawing a blank in Portugal. Everything went really well this weekend. Although the first few stages didn’t go quite how we’d have liked, we stayed calm and in the end we were able to take control of the race.”

Meanwhile, Hirvonen had this to say: “This result is perfect for the team and the twenty points I scored this weekend take me back up to third in the overall standings. I have made further progress in my understanding of the DS3 WRC and I can’t wait to compete in the coming rallies!”

The WRC now returns to Europe for the Acropolis Rally at the end of May.

Dani Sordo confirmed as Ford stand-in

Dani Sordo will take temporary leave from his Prodrive MINI team to fill in for Ford at Rally Argentina later this month. Ford found themselves with an opening after Jari-Matti Latvala injured himself while cross-country skiing.

Prodrive won’t be racing in Argentina so in some ways it made sense to utlilise Sordo’s talents. Ford hasn’t been wasting any time, either, posting pics to Facebook overnight showing Sordo testing an M-Sport Fiesta RS WRC.

Dani Sordo is gracious to Prodrive for the opportunity and has proven form in the South American event. “When you are a rally driver all you want to do is to compete,” he said. “So I am really happy that Prodrive has given me the chance to drive the Ford. I was second the last time I competed in Argentina, but as I will be learning a new car, it will be difficult to repeat this.”

Ford World Rally Team boss, Malcolm Wilson, is also thankful for Prodrive’s assistance. “The agreement is for one rally only, and I would like to thank the management of Dani’s current team [Prodrive], who were extremely gracious in helping us in such challenging circumstances,” he explained.

Prodrive will be back in action for Rally NZ in June.

Jari-Matti Latvala to miss Rally Argentina

Jari-Matti Latvala broke his collar bone in a cross-country skiing fall during the week and will miss Rally Argentina (27–29 April). Ford will hire a temporary stand-in for Latvala in Argentina and here’s where it starts to get interesting.

First, Malcolm Wilson’s comments on Latvala’s injury: “My first concern has obviously been Jari and how best to get his situation resolved so it’s right for him.

“Now we have taken the decision that it’s best for him to miss Argentina so he’s 100 per cent fit for the Acropolis, one of the most difficult rallies in the championship, we will look at his replacement for Argentina although we’re not currently in a position to make an announcement until Monday at the earliest.”

Turns out the rumour mill has pushed Dani Sordo’s name to the top of the pile, assuming Ford and Prodrive can agree to terms.

Moreover, with a strong likelihood that Latvala will be with Volkswagen next year, perhaps Sordo’s move to Ford, if it goes ahead, could be permanent in 2013.
