AutoExpress takes closer look at Mk6 Golf GTI

Mk6 Golf GTI

It was with some anticipation that I stumbled across this article on the AutoExpress website. A studio shoot including all six versions of the Golf GTI, and a promised write up of the first five, with a declaration at the end of which GTI they reckon is the best. As an unashamed GTI fan, having owned a Mk4 GTI and currently a Mk5 GTI, I was pretty keen to see more. So, when I checked in at golfmk6.com and saw the article in question I was even happier. Only fair to share and share alike, then.

Just the verdict I would be pleased with. In my opinion, while the MkI has it over the MkII in terms of classic looks, the II gets the nod for a better more refined drive and a better overall package. If you had to live with one every day, you would choose the MkII. If you wanted a project car for the sake of owning a classic, the MkI is your motor.

Awesome article, thanks for posting. My uncle in the UK had a MkII identical to that one, it was such an incredible car. A MkV or VI daily driver and a MkII restoration project sounds like the key to automotive happiness…

Absolutely. One day I hope to get my hands on a Mk1 GTI. They’re at the age now that importing one might be a bit more of a realistic option too.
