BMW 1 Series (F20) hatch

Development of the next generation (F20) BMW 1 Series hatch is well underway as this video from the Nürburgring shows. There appears to be at least five development cars at the company’s Nürburg facility.

Aside from the evolutionary development of the love it or hate it five door hatch body style there’s not much else to learn from this clip. BimmerFile tells us the F20 1er will be seen in or near production ready form by the end of next year.

Chris Harris drives 1M searching for the best of M people

Chris Harris drives the BMW 1M Coupé

Chris Harris has just driven a near production-ready BMW 1M Coupé. It was an odd gig, really; BMW flew him from London to Munich for a 20 minute test drive. Knowing his time would be brief, Harris compiled a list of the best things he likes about M-badged BMWs. When driving the prototype he cross-checked the feedback from the car against his “M car” list. He used words “like an M car” a number of times and concluded that he is “really, really excited” by the 1M Coupé and can’t wait to drive a full production version in the near future.

All of these thoughts were recorded to video and you can watch the clip after the break. Some of the audio is not great, but the content is definitely worth the effort. It sounds like the 1M Coupé has the potential to be future classic.

Volkswagen confirms Golf VI Cabrio

The Motor Report brings word that Volkswagen has confirmed production for a Golf VI-based cabrio. They’ve even come up with this rendering to show how such a car could look. The soft-top Golf will be built in Osnabrück at the former Karmann factory, which Volkswagen picked up after the body specialists filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

Production should commence in 2011 with deliveries for late that year or possibly beginning in 2012. Following a near decade-long hiatus the re-introduction of the Golf Cabrio would likely signal the end of the Eos convertible. Check out the source link below for more.

Volkswagen rejects move into Formula One

According to a report in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Volkswagen Chairman Ferdinand Piech has decided against entering VW into Formula One. Such a move was previously intimated by a number of sources, including brand ambassador Hans Stuck.

Volkswagen enjoyed open wheeler success last year by powering young Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo in his Red Bull sponsored Carlin Motorsport machine to the 2009 F3 title. It was understood new engine rules for F1, to be introduced in 2012, would provide an ideal opportunity for VW to move into motorsport’s premier category as an engine supplier. Reportedly there was interest from Red Bull Racing and even McLaren to partner with VW.

However, it now appears the Volkswagen Group may focus its motorsport endeavours on the WRC and Le Mans 24 hour race through its Audi and Porsche brands.

It’s no secret that Mark Webber faces a crucial race at the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend. He needs to win, or, ideally, finish ahead of Fernando Alonso to boost his title chances. Even so, he casually says he’s expecting lots of traffic, strange weather and some nice looking women. Here’s hoping there’s a race win in there, as well!

Mazda targets sub-1000kg weight for next MX-5

Along with the above rendering Autocar brings word that Mazda are aiming to keep the weight of its next MX-5 under 1000kg. A saving of over 130kg on the current model. As usual, we can expect a nice little handler. Further aiding nimble handling is the adoption of production techniques from the RX-8 which will allow the engine to be mounted behind the front axle, while the fuel tank and heaviest parts of the exhaust will be in front of the rear axle.

Mazda is scheduled to unveil its fourth generation MX-5 towards the end of 2011 at the Tokyo Motor Show, before its sales launch in 2012.

Formula One: 30 years on, will history repeat?

The official Formula 1 website has an article reminding us 2010 is the 30th anniversary of Alan Jones‘ world championship triumph. When you read the opening paragraph it could easily be re-used for Mark Webber.

“His belligerence was partly a by-product of a long and hard struggle to make it to Formula One racing in the first place. Once there, he was considered little more than a journeyman driver, until he teamed up with the then equally undistinguished Williams Red Bull team.”

See what I mean.

This weekend sees Webber return to Interlagos to defend his Brazilian Grand Prix trophy. A repeat of his 2009 victory would cut Fernando Alonso’s title lead by at least seven points and ensure the final race at Abu Dhabi will decide the winner.

If you were writing the script, the return of an Australian to the summit of Formula One would be a nice fit 30 years after the last Aussie achieved the ultimate prize. It’s worth noting, then, Jones won the last two Grands Prix of his title winning season. A repeat of that stat for Mark Webber would be a wonderful way to cap off his best F1 season to date.

Incidentally, today is Alan Jones’ birthday. So, happy birthday to you AJ, may all your wishes come true. And those of all Australian F1 fans, as well!

Ferrari World previewed in Abu Dhabi

Ferrari World opens in Abu Dhabi

That Maranello red elephant in the desert is close to opening in Abu Dhabi. Otherwise known as Ferrari World, the theme park was given a press preview last week. At over 200,000 square metres this is one big park. Inside you’ll see all the expected Ferrari guff, as well as a few roller coasters and the like.

The official opening to the public has been delayed until 4 November as mark of respect to the passing of Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, Emir of Ras al-Khaimah, one of the United Arab Emirates.

Ferrai World expect the visitor split will be 60:40 in favour local residents to tourists. Being placed alongside the Yas Marina Grand Prix track will certainly help boost overseas tourist numbers. Ticket prices range from AED165 ($45) and go right up to AED375 ($105) which includes priority access for all rides.

One Veyron for the price of two

If you think our Luxury Car Tax is bad then spare a thought for those unfortunate Bugatti Veyron buyers in India. You see, the Indian government laughs in the face of our measly 33% rate and says if you can afford to buy one Veyron you can afford to buy two. Only trouble is, you still only get one Veyron for double the money.

That’s right, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, which is about to go on sale in India, gets slugged with a 110% import tax. The final cost is a cool 160 million rupees. If that doesn’t mean much to you, it works out to be around US$3.6 million. Ouch! Other markets charge taxes, too, but none are quite as high as in India; for comparison a Grand Sport would cost you US$2.2 million in America or €1.6 million in Europe (around AU$2.25m).

Of course, after buying a Veryron, the real problem for Indian consumers is finding some space in their Dharavi mansions to park their new wheels.
