Is Volkswagen about to dump its twincharged 1.4 litre engine?

Volkswagen 1.4 litre TSI engine

Despite winning the 2009 International Engine of the Year award speculation is rife that Volkswagen will be discontinuing its twincharged 1.4 litre engine. While the clever use of supercharging and turbocharging offers excellent access to power right through the rev range it’s believed Volkswagen considers the engine to be too complex and expensive.

Until Volkswagen makes a public comment we won’t know for sure if that is their official stance. However, reliability seems to be a real concern for this otherwise charming and efficient engine, too.

At least, that’s the case based on anecdotal evidence posted to our user-based Golf VI 1.4 TSI Tried & Tested review. Of the 16 comments posted to date, half relate to engine complaints. A quick google search of “VW 1.4 TSI engine problems” will also yield many more results than Volkswagen would care for.

So, it’s probably a case of watching this space to see how Volkswagen responds. What effect this news may have on the new Polo GTI or A1 1.4 TFSI is also unclear.

Seems strange they would do this, rather than overcoming the problems? I recall the basic block and bottom end is a pretty old design, with some strengthening to cope with the twincharger.

Curious!

You’re right, and it does seem a little odd that the older Mk5 GT engine doesn’t appear to suffer the same level of issues as the Mk6 version does.

My wife has a Golf with this engine and we have had 20,000 km of trouble free motoring. We have had the software update that VW put out last year in a “service campaign”. I sympathise with those affected.

I think the advent of twin scroll turbochargers is behind the dropping of the twincharger comment. It seems good enough for BMW and Renault for example.

Ah, the curse of the International Engine of the Year award strikes again! The previous back-to-back winner was the BMW N54 twin-turbo 3.0L used in the 135i, 335i, 535i, X6, and Z4. It is plagued by failures of the high pressure fuel pump and subject to a massive recall in the USA. BMW have since replaced the N54 with a twin-scroll single-turbo N55.

I own a car with this engine and have just passed 10 000 miles. Started with the management light just before service and had the ECU update done. Did service and replaced spark plugs with uprated plugs and 300 miles later the problem is back. There is a definate issue with these engines and misfires. Some fixes include, ECU update, new injectors and coil packs as the injectors fail after a while because there is an issue with spray pattern and fuel deposits on the piston head leading to ring failure. I am a fan of the engine to be fair and if they drop the engine from the line will be disapointed but if it is going to cost too much to repair under warranty for VW I can fully understand the reasoning behind it but what happens to the value of cars fitted with this engine further don the line???!!!

Hi guys,

I’m looking to buy the VW Tiguan 1.4 TSI Bluemotion. But if I look at the comments I think I must rather steer clear of this engine.

hi,

I bought a VW Tiguan 1.4 TSI Bluemotion 118kw a week ago.

so far (500km) i love it! i am just worried now, i hope the engine will not give problems…

We bought a VW Tiguan 1.4 TSI Bluemotion two months ago and it has been great. We’ve done 1500km and it has run without hitch. Despite the manual stating that the engine may burn up to 1 litre of oil every 2000km it hasn’t burnt a drop. A wonderful car to drive.

My wife’s Golf GT with the 1.4 TSI engine was great for the first 40 000kms, but now at 60 000 it is in for it’s third new engine. So far VW have absorbed the cost, but being without a car for five months (2 month for first engine replacement, nearly 3 months and still in dealership for 3rd engine) is not what we expected after buying a “premium” car. This engine is a lemon!!! Buy one at your own risk. If you own one that’s still going well (when they are fun to drive), and you have no conscience, sell it NOW! Alternatively, trade it in for a diesel, then sell the diesel Golf with a clear conscience.

I always said asking so muck of a small capacity engine would end in tears . I feel sorry for current owners who are carrying out R&D on VW behalf. 3 engines in 60000 Kms is a sick Joke.

Another unhappy owner. 2009 118TSI, with a replace clutch, engine, Mechatronics unit (ECU), alternator, battery and now gearbox. Maybe the ACCC needs to investigate the car? It is not safe! I hope nobody gets killed due to the motor/gearbox stopping all of a sudden.
We bought the VW so my wife would have a reliable car – but it has been a disaster. Is this revenge for beating the Germans in WW1 & WW2?

I have a 2007 Golf GT TSI which we purchased second hand from a well known dealer on sydneys north shore. We only had the car a week and it was back to the dealer for the boost problem over 3500rpm, I virtually had to tell them what to fix to get it sorted, , then a couple of months later it was back in for a dead igniter coil, fixed under warranty then unfortunately the factory warranty expired just when a second igniter failed this time I paid to have the remaning coils replaced.
The car had squeaks galore which the dealer sort of fixed one but I had to sort the rest out myself because they were next to useless.
The car also had an annoying rattle at start up, of which i complianed to the dealer but they never sorted out , they just let it go untill it fails then hit you for all you have got.
I knew it was internal and after a while it got worse and worse, where at each start (if the car sat for about 30mins, the timing chain would make a thrashing noise at start until the hydraulic tensioner would take up the slack, last week the check engine light came up which I believe will indicate that the cam phasing has exceeded the factory limits.
This morning she died, I tried to start the car to drive to work and she just cranks and cranks, no ignition, I now suspect that the chain is so stretched that it has dropped past the lower crank pulley that the cams are not even rotating or that the ecu won’t allow it to fire because of the timing is to far out.
I have called the dealer and have booked it in , I hope that the extended warranty will cover the failure, fingers crossed, then time to get rid of her, pity because when it was going it is a great little car to drive.
i wonder if the engine designer will or has had his/her ass kicked or installing a single row chain in place of a dual row job.

Pffft and Rotary Engines are unreliable…

If people warmed engines up before giving the curry and cooled them down after, ran them on BP or Shell 98 life “may” be better.

Heat kills plastic parts like coil packs and sensors.

I have a sequential turbo FD3s RX7 and the problems associated with the complex design makes the Twin Charged VW engine seem hardly worth a complaint.
The 1.4TSI a brilliant engine IMO it’s a shame to read peoples problems. You can’t even feel the transition!! Come for a drive in my RX7 and I’ll show you torque dip… Mind you with 234rwkWs I can live with it 😉

Have just serviced the Tiguan 1.4 TSI Trend and fun , 10,000 k’s its been an absolute pleasure , no problems , always drive off slowly in the cold morning and wait 10 seconds to let the motor idle awhile before turning off if used heavily.
Great design , lovely handeling, a pleasure to own , very happy

I have a golf gt 1.4 and just had a new timing chain done…it’s only on 43 000 it is still misfiring on cylinder 1 and has had compression check next it’s being checked by a fuel pressure specialist….wil I ever find out what is wrong with my car…been in garage 3 weeks now

My Golf Mk V TDi Pacific MY09 has been running without a problem. Purchased new. Heaps of torque, loves and eats hills.

Aug 2009 118kw TSi 33000 on the clock. Took the car in as it was idling rough, new engine required. 4 -6 weeks…. not happy. Have had issue with power from engine since 2 months old, and after 2 years the DSG went. I have two friends with same car and all 3 are now out of action. Friends car has had engine replaced twice, but they now cannot get the car to start. Another friend has Tiguan and its in the shop being assessed, Same problem as mine. The car / engine is a lemon.

sorry to hear I’m not on my own – had a VW Polo Bluemotion from new with full service/repair plans – dpf went at circa 70K – engine blew up last week at 135K, 3 months out of extended warranty – anyone know why VW reduced warranty availability on these from 160K to 120K ? – same main dealer where bought offered £500 for 4 year old car with full service history but blown up engine – just the latest in long line of problem VW’s/VW problems – wouldn’t have another VW if you gave me it !!!

Hi Just thought I’d give an update on my Golf GT, the problem turned out to be two fold,
The engine rattle that annoyed me so much turned out to be caused by the cam shaft advance mechanism (which VW has a technical publication on), when the engine was pulled down they also found that the timing chain guides had failed, then they tried to sting me for the repairs $4500!!! even though I had taken the extended warranty, That’s when I really got my back up , after calls to the dealer principal and VW Australia they finally came to the party and covered the fix 50/50.
I must say the the service manager at Chatswood classic cars was a real gentleman and helped me as much as he could.
I must admit that after the repairs were made the car has run faultlessly and now drives as it should have originally and is now due for its next service.

Sister in law bought the 1.4 TSI new in her Scirroco. Car started to misfire at 30k kms and had to have pistons replaced! Crazy! Was thinking of buying my wife the Polo GTI but seems like a bad idea 🙁

Hello, I had my 1.4 tsi 160hp manual Golf serviced at 75,000. Next day warning lamp comes on currently with main dealer costing 2,000 and rising. Any suggestens .2009 Model.

Bought 2010Golf 118TSI brand new after about 1month the gearbox seemed to slip sometime when changing gears. 25K km or 30 months, gearbox replaced under warranty. 6months later 45k service done 2 weeks before warranty expired easter Saturday EPC light and motor management light came on after puff of black smoke from exhaust. have just dropped at service centre and was informed the would repair under warranty, thank f#$%.
informed that when they perform service it is just a change of oil and filters. what about a tune-up. they have to put it on the computor its ticked on the service sheet!

Have a 2011 Tiguan S 4M at 15k. Last week, the EPC and catalytic converter lights came on and the engine died on the road. Defective turbo charger. Still under repair in CO.

Got a polo G T I , miss fire , had new plugs v w done, done round 400 miles , had to get R A C out trouble with plugs again, might sell the car, have not got the time to keep taking the car car,

I have the tiguan 118TSi 41000KM so far and no issues, does need an oil top up every 4 to 6 months but we were told about this when we purchased it.

Have only ever used 98 fuel as advised by the dealership, which may contribute to its good health?

I bought a 2009 MY10 118 TSi two months ago from ‘reputable dealer’. Three weeks ago, warning lights came on. I had car towed to the dealer. It took them three days to even look at it and then they told me it would cost me $5000 to repair. They said it was my fault for using the wrong fuel, I only use Premium 98, so I don’t know what more I could have done. Finally they agreed to repair it free of charge (which they say they were doing as a ‘goodwill gesture’, whereas it should be still covered under the statutory warranty). It is still with the dealer being repaired. I don’t know when I will get it back.

I have a 2007 Golf Gt… Engine light came on, then had loss of power and rattling under 20 rpm… Thought it was the cool pack… Mechanic said 1 cylinder running on 25psi 3 others are running at 125psi… Not sure what is wrong… Anyone else gone through this?

Purchased my first 2010 VW GOLF tsi 118 3 weeks ago. The golf just switched off while driving, struggles to start and rattles and splutters on idle. Been sitting at a European mechanic for a few days now.. surely this TSI 118 motor can’t keep having this problem across the board?? Does anyone know if VW will help with a car 7 years old?
