TRD supercharger rumoured for Toyota 86

Toyota GT 86

The Toybaru project has been applauded for its back to basics approach. However, that won’t stop anyone applauding the suggestion from Chief engineer Tetsuo Tada that Toyota Racing Developments (TRD) is planning to give the 86 a boost by whacking on a supercharger to the 2.0 litre boxer engine.

Rumours say power could be increased by around 40kW, with the possibility of more to come. TRD favours supercharging over turbocharging for its crisper throttle response. The fact they’ve been supercharging cars for almost 25 years probably has a bit to do with the decision as well.

The reviews of both variants (that is, both Subaru and Toyota) are absolutely off the charts on the EVO magazine site. MX-5 with a roof, they say, for its tactility and organic experience. Now, I reckon a supercharger would be great news for those for whom this car was an irrelevance on account of its modest output numbers. I would not mind this as an nth (where n>3) car.

Prof, I don’t know if it qualifies as an nth car if n is only larger than 3!!! You need the M5, CTT, C63 black, C2S…which means this has to be where n>=5.

I was trying to be rational! But you know what? I miss the Clio and this might fill in that void! Why the heck can’t the Yanks get round to importing Renaults?!

Too much parasitic loss with a Supercharger.. it robs engine power to make power.

I prefer turbocharging any day! If there was a turbocharged variant of this car, I’d be all over it, as would many other enthusiasts! I say bring out a turbocharged version PLEASE!
