Volkswagen Golf24 says happy 35th to the GTI

Volkswagen Golf24

Back in 1976 a handful of Volkswagen engineers dared to dream. That dream became the Golf GTI; the hot hatch was born. To celebrate its 35th birthday Volkswagen Motorsport has raided the parts bin and created this awesome weapon ready to take on the world’s toughest endurance race, the Nürburgring 24 hour.

Fitted with an enhanced version of the Audi TT RS engine the 2.5 litre turbo pumps out 440hp and 540Nm. There’s also an all-wheel drive system in place to make sure the flared pocket rocket can maintain dignity.

More pics and detail can be read over at AUSringers.

Ford wants Ferrari to stop using F150 name

Ferrari F150 logo

Until late January, when Ferrari launched their 2011 F1 car, the name F150 immediately conjured up images of hillbillies chowing down some grits for breakfast before heading off to… well, let’s not go there, lest Ford’s lawyers come our way as well. The point being Ford’s F-series truck range is well known the world over. And it just so happens the F-150, launched in 1975, is the most successful model in that range.

Ferrari has put noses seriously out of joint at Dearborn by calling their latest F1 car the F150. Last year it was the F10, so it stood to reason this year’s car would be known as the F11. However, 2011 marks 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. So, it also seems perfectly reasonable for such an iconic brand like Ferrari to honour that occasion by referring to it in the name of their ultimate automotive creation.

Well, too bad, say Ford and they are currently suing Ferrari for, among other things, trademark infringement over the use of the F150 name. On the face of it, that seems fair enough. Although, the Ford allegations cite irreparable damage to it’s F-150 trademark. We’re not so sure that is really the case, but that’s for the US District Court in Detroit to decide, not us.

Further, Ford isn’t happy at Ferrari’s microsite for their F1 car—www.ferarrif150.com—and they’re submitting a US$100,000 damages claim under the US Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act. They also want Ferrari to cough up any profits they earn in the US by using the F150 name.

This could get interesting, we’ll keep a watching brief and wait to see what happens next.

Pre-production MINI Coupé spied

MINI Coupé

Auto snappers CarPix have caught this pre-production MINI Coupé near BMW’s headquarters in Munich. At first glance things appear basically the same as the concept model revealed in mid-2009. However, a closer look reveals a few changes. Easily spotted are the updated rear light treatment and other LCI styling cues. They’re to be expected, of course, but something we haven’t seen before is a retractable rear spolier, which can be seen by following the source link below.

The model in this snap appears to be the range-topping JCW version, evidenced by the fat exhaust tips, plus the JCW-style wheels and brake calipers. While BMW’s renowned swirly camouflage pattern covers most roof details you can see a glimpse of red paint to match the mirrors. The red roof, black body is another key JCW colour combo.

We reported last December that production for the Coupé has commenced. That would indicate that this car is very close to production trim and is likely undergoing final evaluations before release. We should see the R58 Coupé on sale overseas before the end of the year. It’s possible Australian sales could begin very late in 2011, but pencil in next year if you’re like us and can’t wait to drive one.

It’s Heidfeld v Senna for the vacant Renault seat

Nick Heidfeld & Bruno Senna

Following Robert Kubica’s recent accident, which may cost the Pole his F1 career and will almost certainly see him out of F1 for 2011, Lotus Renault GP is in need of a replacement driver. And quite soon with the next test window opening in Jerez tonight (Australian time).

With five reserve drivers on their roster—yes, that’s right five—you’d think it would be a safe bet they would recruit from within. However, this now appears increasingly unlikely. Word on the interwebz is that Nick Heidfeld is the favourite to get the gig. A theory loosely supported by an official statement from Lotus Renault GP, which you can read below.

The reason for chasing an experienced driver like Heidfeld is twofold. First, the talent in reserve for Renault is mostly young, exuberant, but inexperienced in developing a Formula One car. Second, the new R31 features a radical forward exiting exhaust which requires a sage guiding hand through its development process. Remember, Kubica set the fastest time in Valencia last week, so it’s undoubted the R31 has great potential.

Heidfeld made his F1 debut in 2000 and has driven for Prost, Sauber, Jordan, Williams, BMW Sauber and Sauber once again in the latter part of last year. He has experience. Bruno Senna, on the other hand, does not. He was widely expected to land the role of filling Robert’s shoes, but it looks less likely now.

There is hope for Senna, though, as both he and Heidfeld will get track time at Jerez and the results there will play a large part in deciding who joins Vitaly Petrov on the grid at Bahrain in a few weeks time

Force India unveils 2011 F1 car

Force India VJM04

Force India became the final team to launch its 2011 Formula Challenger overnight when it released these images of the new VJM04. Cast your minds back to 1991 and you’ll see the Force India team started life as Eddie Jordan’s plaything. The Jordan team went through a few iterations before falling into the seemingly secure control of Indian businessman Vijay Mallya.

In a nice piece of symmetry, 20 years after the debut of the Jordan Grand Prix team, the VJM04 is the first car designed for Force India by new technical director Andrew Green, who was one of the men behind the original Jordan 191.

Green signed up with Force India in the middle of last year and explains some of the changes made to this year’s car, “Everything is different, but visually a lot of it is subtle. The most obvious visual change is that we’ve gone away from a conventional roll-hoop to a blade. This gives us a small packaging improvement compared to a more conventional style. The engine cover is different, in-line with the abolition of the F-duct system. But there are a lot of differences under the skin that people won’t necessarily notice.”

Green has also taken a fresh approach at addressing the team’s weaknesses, “Looking back over the years the cars we have produced here have always struggled at the high downforce tracks – they always been ‘slippery’ cars. We’ve identified a problem, and now we have to fix it, and it means that potentially there’s another strategic aero change coming as well.”

Joining Adrian Sutil in 2011 will be F1 debutant 24-year-old Scotsman Paul di Resta. He’s not setting any unrealistic expectations and hopes to put in a solid performance for his new team in their chase for a top five finish, “I don’t want to say exact targets on record as there are so many factors that can come into play. What I do want to do is to have a positive approach, finish, be consistent and contribute strongly to the team’s overall performance. We’ve got high aims of finishing in a good constructors’ championship position and I know that I’ve got to play my part in this.”

More pics and press material after the break, including Q&A interviews with the Force India’s drivers; Adrian Sutil, Paul di Resta and reserve-driver Nico Hulkenberg. Also available is a YouTube clip featuring Andrew Green talking about the VJM04.

Kubica continues to improve as co-driver hits out

Robert Kubica's crash wreckage

The latest statement from Lotus Renault GP informs us that Robert Kubica is continuing to do well in the days following his surgery. He’ll be in hospital for another two–three weeks and will undergo further operations later this week.

Meanwhile, Kubica’s co-driver Jakub Gerber has hit out at fellow competitors and called for changes to the safety of modern rally cars.

In an interview given outside the hospital where Kubica is recovering Gerber said, “I saw that Robert was squeezed against the barrier, and that’s why I stopped the other car. Then there was another problem, cars that should have stopped, just passed by us.”

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport Gerber gave an account of what happened, “After skidding, the car leaned against the guard rail and pushed it outwards. Then it crashed against the following guard rail.

“The guard rail pierced through the car and went all the way through it. I immediately saw it was serious, he also had a bad bruise under his eye after hitting the steering wheel. Robert passed out and I exited through the window because the door was stuck.

“The ambulance arrived immediately and then came the firemen. They took over half an hour to pull him out. The first crew didn’t have the shears so they had to wait for another crew. Then the helicopter couldn’t land in that spot, so Robert had to be moved and more time was lost.”

He went on to say the FIA should introduce new safety regulations to improve protection from frontal impact, “That opening [between the two sections of armco] makes no sense. But, most of all, we shouldn’t have cars with so little protection at the front. It’s not the first time a crash like this happens—the Federation should think of something to protect the cockpit.”

As well as the official statement from Lotus Renault GP you can watch an animation of the crash which has just been posted to YouTube.

2012 Peugeot 308 revealed ahead of mid-year debut

Peugeot 308

Peugeot has released images of its new 308 range, which will make its local debut in Melbourne this July at the Australian International Motor Show.

Styling cues have been sourced from the SR1 concept car and the updated 308 is latest Peugeot to rid itself of the company’s once familiar goofy oversized grille. I’m sure you’ll agree the world is now a better place.

Impressively, the weight of the new model has dropped across the range by an average of 25kg. Okay, that’s not a lot, but it’s a welcome step all the same. And, of course, no new model would be complete without LED daytime running lights and Peugeot has duly obliged.

For now we’ve got a few more pics and a press release from Peugeot UK. Once we have more news on the local lineup we shall let you know.

Hispania Racing Team unveils 2011 F1 car

HRT F111

HRT has released images of their new F111 Formula One car. Indeed, they’re some of the slickest images we’ve seen so far in 2011. Despite the almost embarrassing call for sponsorship, the F111 otherwise looks great.

Just making the grid last year was the ultimate challenge for HRT. This year, they hope to benefit from that experience, as Colin Kolles, Team Principal of Hispania Racing, explains, “The F111 represents a significant step forward for Hispania Racing. We have made a big improvement for starting our second season in Formula 1 and what you see in our new car confirms Hispania Racing’s commitment to F1.”

It’s no secret that HRT is probably running the tightest budget in F1 and while the new car does feature the adjustable rear wing it’s pleasing to note Jose Ramon Carabante, HRT President, confirmed there will be further updates to follow, “We are very pleased to introduce the first spec of the F111, which means a huge design-effort from our side. This is only a first step as we are planning several updates during the season.”

Indian driver Narain Karthikeyan will fill one of the driver positions for HRT in 2011, while an announcement on the team’s second driver is yet to be made. The F111 will make its track debut during the final test window at Bahrain in early March.

BMW M5 concept to debut in April

BMW F10 M5

Word on the e-street says the new F10 BMW M5, complete with a 600hp twin-turbo V8, will make its public debut in concept form at Auto Shanghai in April. A full premiere in production trim is then expected to follow in September at the Frankfurt show.

While some may think it’s a shame that the M5 is going down a forced induction path, advancements in turbo technology should ensure the new engine retains at least some character of the car’s normally aspirated past.
