Sydney Olympic Park to host 2014 motor show

The Australian International Motor Show will move to Sydney Olympic Park in 2014 and 2016. The 2012 show will take place at its traditional venue, the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre (SCEC), for one last time in mid–late October.

Australia’s major motor show alternates between Sydney and Melbourne each year and Sydney’s move to a new venue was forced by a three-year redevelopment of the SCEC.

AIMS Event Director, Russ Tyrie, welcomes the new opportunities offered by the venue switch.

“Whilst the SCEC has been our home for 23 shows, we are very much looking forward to the opportunities presented to us and exhibitors alike at Sydney Showground,” said Tyrie.

“The Sydney Olympic Park venue will enable the Motor Show to grow and become a more diverse event, with the expansive outdoor areas giving exhibitors more room and the chance to host both on and off stand activities the possibilities are practically endless.”

A permanent move to the Olympic precinct has not been confirmed with AIMS organisers keen to see what the new SCEC will offer when it’s back in action.

In a joint statement released today, Sydney Showground and the Australian International Motor Show Joint Venture have confirmed that the 2014 and 2016 Sydney-based Motor Shows will be held at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park.

The 2012 Australian International Motor Show in October will remain at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre (SCEC) which is scheduled to close at the end of next year, in preparation for an extensive three-year expansion and redevelopment project – leaving the Sydney Shows in need of a new venue.

A number of options were reviewed with the first-class Sydney Showground exhibition facilities at Sydney’s Olympic Park finally decided as the home for the 2014 and 2016 Shows.

Sydney Showground offers 20 unique venues across an array of exhibition halls and meeting rooms as well as standalone pavilions and more than 15,000 square metres of outdoor area.

“Whilst the SCEC has been our home for twenty three shows, we are very much looking forward to the opportunities presented to us and exhibitors alike at Sydney Showground,” said Australian International Motor Show, Event Director, Russ Tyrie.

“The Sydney Olympic Park venue will enable the Motor Show to grow and become a more diverse event, with the expansive outdoor areas giving exhibitors more room and the chance to host both on and off stand activities the possibilities are practically endless.”

Sydney Showground management are equally as excited about the relocation of the Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) in 2014 and 2016.

“Sydney Showground prides itself on attracting and promoting world class exhibitions and events – AIMS is a great example of this,” said Sydney Showground General Manager, Peter Thorpe.

“Sydney Showground and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority are thrilled to welcome AIMS to the precinct in 2014 and are confident exhibitors, the general public and motor enthusiasts alike will be extremely pleased with the interactive nature the venue is able achieve.”

Sydney Olympic Park is situated in the geographical heart of Sydney and is well serviced by public transport, 10,000 parking spaces located within a few minutes’ walk of the venue, along with a selection of accommodation options and restaurants.

“SCEC has been a wonderful venue for Motor Shows in Sydney over the years, hosting hundreds of model reveals with almost five million visitors streaming through its doors to see the best that the Australian automotive industry has to offer,” said Mr Tyrie.

“Were looking forward to seeing how the plans shape up for its redevelopment; but rest assured, the 2012 Australian International Motor Show at SCEC promises to be a fantastic send-off to a great venue.”

The 2012 Australian International Motor Show will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre from October 19-28, 2012.
