Fancy a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’?

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

We like to keep a watching eye on the items for sale at the Classic Throttle Shop in Sydney. Today’s news brings word of a genuine classic up for sale—a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing in Fire Red paint with only 23,075 miles on the clock. It’s simply beautiful.

The ad reads in part:

This stunning 300 SL was built in 1955 and was fully restored in America in the early nineties. This was a nut and bolt back to bare chassis with body off restoration and when it was finished it was shown at several national Concourse events where it duly won them hands down.

The car has been in Australia in a large collection for several years now and has had little use other than maintenance and short runs.

We bow down in the presence of such beauty and wish we had the money to buy an icon like this.

Jay Leno and the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster

Jay Leno drives Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster

The recent Jay Leno European tour has already taken in Wolfsburg and Woking and now the Chambray Chin has sung for his supper at the AMG factory near Stuttgart. He was humming with David Coulthard to the tune of the SLS AMG Roadster. Incidentally Jay, Roger Federer was the first. See, he can still beat someone.

The obligatory video, pictures and press release follow after the break. We must admit, helping to build an AMG V8 would be a very cool thing to do.

What we have seen from these recent Jay Leno visits to Volkswagen, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz is how much weight his opinion must carry back in the US. While we’ve been a little bit rude about him in our recent posts we admit we’re just plain jealous at the opportunities he’s been presented with. Half his luck!

2011 British GP

Here’s the pics from Silverstone. You’ll see plenty of Alonso in his winning Ferrari, plenty of action and plenty of Prince Harry. He gets around a bit, too, spotted at most of the media portals while we were sourcing the pics from the British Grand Prix. He really doesn’t look too much like his dad, does he?

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black announces itself

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black

Images of this car have been emerging on websites around the globe. The car, we are told, is the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black and it magically appeared at a Mercedes event at the Le Castellet circuit in France. As if AMG wasn’t already enough, Benz goes back in black to turn the dial way past eleven.

The snorting bonnet and muscular wheel arches give the first clue that something special lies beneath. Confirmed details are scarce right now, but in the case of the C63 AMG Black, special is a 6.2 litre V8. It produces around 490hp or, if you got a bonus this month, you can have 520hp thanks to the even Blacker version, otherwise known as a Performance Pack.

Predictions say 100km/h will be knocked off in about 4 seconds, let’s be daring and say 3.9 might be achievable. After all there’s E-Class bits, including a slippery diff in the back and a fancy MCT gearbox at the front to help wage an ongoing war between rubber and asphalt.

Production of this model won’t be limited and when Mercedes-Benz releases final confirmed details we’ll bring you the word. Remember, once you go Black…

There’s some more pics after the break and a nice reminder from Jeremy Clarkson as to why the AMG Black series is worth the fuss.

Motorclassica at AIMS 2011

In the back corner of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre this week you’ll find the Motorclassica display. It has some of the motoring world’s most iconic designs on show. Almost all would have been stars on the international motor show circuit of their era.

A 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ grabbed our attention. It’s one of the world’s most recognisable cars and we can’t help but be transfixed whenever we see one.

A couple of classic Jaguars featuring beautiful period styling in the form of the XK120 and XK140 are to be admired. And you certainly won’t see a Tucker Torpedo every day. The DNA of virtually every modern Ferrari can be traced back to the Dino. You may not know what a Talbot Lago Type 26C looks like, but we reckon you’ll be transported back in time once you start reading its history.

For more info on Motorclassica and the annual show at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, be sure to check out the official website.

MB at AIMS 2011

Mercedes-Benz clearly holds a lot of faith in the Australian International Motor Show. While their Munich competitors took a more streamlined approach to their display, the world’s oldest car maker made a statement of another kind by going for quantity.

Good thing, then, that recent Benzes have plenty of quality about them as well. Getting a front row seat at the reveal of the C63 AMG Coupé was enjoyed, as we’re sure the ever-present 6.2 litre V8 would be. Assuming you’ve got the $154,800 plus extras to get the keys.

The CLS63 AMG sat behind its smaller sibling and also looks a bit special. There’s a welcome aura of class and quality in Mercedes’ interiors too.

It was almost sad to see the SLS AMG stuck in the back corner, but we got over it by imagining ourselves behind the wheel. It was parked next to a G-wagen; that’d make a nice garage.

The E Class impressed with its size and the new SLK with its increasing levels of presence. Gone are the hairdresser days of the original R170 model. The R172 SLK goes on sale in Australia next month; list pricing for the SLK 200 will be $82,900 and $118,900 for the SLK 350.

2011 European Grand Prix

Perhaps the most exciting stat to emerge from the 2011 European Grand Prix is that all 24 starters finished the race. That’s only the fourth time in history this has happened. Indeed, Narain Karthikeyan has his name etched into the record books for being the first ever F1 driver to finish 24th. To help relive this rare occurrence here’s 88 pics, featuring all 24 cars, for you to enjoy.

Mercedes C63 AMG achieves world’s longest drift

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

A standard Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has smoked its way to the record books by claiming the world’s longest drift. The stunt took place at Mercedes-Benz World in the UK and the V8 powered C63 was driven by pro driver Mauro Calo.

Calo managed to hold his powerslide for a total of 2308 metres, bettering the previous mark, held by US drift ace Vaughn Gittin Jr, by a healthy 394 metres.

On the short circular track Calo hoped to complete a total of 12 laps. Unfortunately for him his rear tyres didn’t last that long.

“The car was so balanced. I was relaxed and only had to make small corrections to the steering and throttle. Then the tyres let go after lap seven, but I kept on going until I knew I’d beaten the record. I’m absolutely chuffed,” explained Calo.

Vaughn Gittin Jr has dismissed Calo’s efforts telling Autoblog, “[there are] thousands of grassroots drifters, that can do giant donuts until the tires pop, as well.”

Video of the new record feat can be seen after the break.

FOR SALE: One-off Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG ‘Concept 358’

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

You may recall this ‘Jaffa concept’ from last year’s Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. Well, if you liked it, and we know a lot of people did, the car is now for sale and could be yours.

Correctly titled the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG ‘Concept 358’, it has been painted in special designo Pearl Orange paint. It’s the only one in Australia and one of just four in the world.

Mercedes has also fitted the AMG Performance Package Plus, adding an extra 22kW of power to the headline stat, which now sits at 358kW. Also included, for added peace of mind, are forged pistons nicked from the SLS AMG.

Currently advertised on carsales for $209,963 the ‘Jaffa’ is a fair step up from a standard C63, but exclusivity costs I guess. Thanks to Edward from Mercedes-Benz Berwick for bringing this to our attention. Give him a call, you know you want to!

2011 Canadian Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Canadian GP

As promised here is the very wet photo gallery from the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. The amount of water shown in some of the pics is amazing; it really must have been treacherous.

Despite his final lap cock-up Sebastian Vettel’s tally of 161 points gives him a 60 point lead in the drivers’ title race, ahead of Jenson Button (101pts) and Mark Webber (94pts). Red Bull is well on the way to another constructors’ title, holding a 69 point lead over McLaren.
