Mark Webber wins a prize!

Mark Webber, 2011 DHL Fastest Lap Award winner

Despite watching his Red Bull Racing teammate Sebastian Vettel virtually win races at will this year, Mark Webber has finally won something. Sadly for him it’s not another Formula One race (fingers crossed for tonight in Brazil). With six fastest laps to his name, the 35-year-old Australian has had his name engraved on the DHL Fastest Lap Award trophy.

Mark set the quickest laps in Malaysia, China, Turkey, Monaco, Belgium and Abu Dhabi. Next best were Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Each with three fastest laps apiece.

Without a win to his name so far this year this must be a bitter sweet award for Mark. It’s also worth noting that Mark was quickest in three of the first four races, when he was, apparently, struggling most to cope with the new Pirelli tyres.

UPDATE 28 November: Make that seven fastest laps for the year to Mark, following his success in Brazil.

2011 Brazlian GP: Qualifying press conference

2011 Brazilian Grand Prix

Well he’s done it. Sebastian Vettel claimed pole position over night at the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix and now holds the outright record for the most number of pole positions in a single season. He has started from P1 15 times this year, one better than Nigel Mansell’s 1992 record.

Vettel (1:11.918) was made to earn his record with Red Bull Racing teammate Mark Webber (1:12.099) alongside in P2. Completing a top three we’ve seen a few times already this year was Jenson Button (1:12.283) for McLaren.

The post-quali press conference below includes some good material about tomorrow’s race, and the possibility of rain, as well as the three guys reflecting on the career of Rubens Barrichello. Rumours are around suggesting Rubens may not get a drive with Williams in 2012, so will this be his last ever race?

Daniel Ricciardo has pressure of his own to secure a drive for the 2012 season and he’ll be happy that he has qualified ahead of the two Virgins, but dissatisfied to behind his HRT teammate Tonio Liuzzi. Here’s hoping Daniel can put in a strong race tomorrow and that we may see him in a Toro Rosso next year.

COTA puts 2012 USGP ball back in Bernie’s court

Circuit of the Americas

Officially there is still ongoing doubt over the future of the 2012 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Bobby Epstein, founding partner of Circuit of The Americas, has responded to Bernie Ecclestone’s ultimatum from last week by returning serve with a Thanksgiving statement claiming they have the money Bernie craves and are ready to pay. Well, almost.

Epstein is entering a game with Ecclestone and as history shows there’s usually only one winner in any games involving Bernie. In his statement Epstein says, “We have been ready to send Mr Ecclestone a sanctioning fee check for some time now.

“He hasn’t received it yet because the new contract presented to us two weeks ago contained unrealistic and unfeasible demands. We have signed and returned a contract similar to what we anticipated receiving. This race should be a reality, but if we are going to make the 2012 race date, we must receive a countersignature in the coming few days. We believe the teams, fans, sponsors and local business share our enthusiasm and hope that their voices will be heard.”

So there Bernie, you’ve been told! The reply from the F1 supremo will likely be firm, forthright and put an end to any doubts. Watch this space.

2011 Brazilian GP: Take a lap around Interlagos

The 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix is the final race in what are now very long Formula One seasons. Making things difficult for us here in Australia is the Monday 3am (AEDT) start time.

With the championship already safely wrapped up for Vettel and Red Bull Racing, viewer numbers will probably be quite low. Which is a bit of a shame as the Interlagos circuit, with its rise and fall, is quite a nice track. Here’s a couple of videos to show you around the 4.3km circuit. First up is Dave Robson, McLaren race engineer, talking us through a lap on their simulator. Decent YouTube clips can be hard to find, so we’ve had to back to around 2007 for the second clip with onboard footage from a Ferrari.

Of course, Mark Webber claimed his second Grand Prix victory in Brazil back in 2009. Can he repeat that success and claim something in what has been a disappointing year for him results wise.

60 years of Ferrari F1 cars

Ferrari F1 cars

This image first appeared a bit over a year when Formula One and Ferrari were celebrating 60 years of the world’s premier motor racing category. Of course, Ferrari is the only team to have competed in F1 every year since it began in 1950.

Perhaps, like us, you missed this poster at the time; it displays all the Ferrari F1 cars to have graced racing tracks over the last six decades. No need to miss it twice. Austin given one week to save 2012 USGP

Circuit of the Americas building progress

The photo above showing building progress at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, was taken one week ago. Since then work has been suspended and race organisers now have just one week to save the future of the 2012 United States Grand Prix.

There’s been talk that Austin organisers would need to have their house in order by 7 December when the FIA’s World Motor Sports Council will meet to ratify the 2012 F1 calendar. Speaking to Reuters Bernie Ecclesetone said, “It needs to be before that. We don’t need any deadlines, having to thrash around at the last minute to do something. It’s gone on long enough.

“They (the Texas circuit owners) have got next week anyway. We are going to be in Brazil so they can come back next week.”

Ecclestone was equally forthright when asked if his recent words were part of normal ongoing negotiations, “What do you want me to do, wait until next year? To put all our cars on it, run around the circuit and everything and come back with no money? The teams want paying.

“It’s not brinkmanship, it never has been with me. I’ve been trying to do a deal now with these people for 18 months or more…if they had the money, I’m sure there would be no problem.”

Building at Circuit of the Americas suspended

Circuit of the Americas

Building work at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas has been suspended indefinitely and the future of the 2012 United States Grand Prix is now in serious doubt. Bernie Ecclestone raised concerns over the event on the weekend. When asked about the future of the USGP he replied, “I don’t know. We’re trying. It’s a bit of an uphill struggle there at the moment.

“There are two parties, one is building a track, the other has the contract and they’ve forgotten to talk to each other.”

Further adding to the concerns are new doubts over funding from the Texas government. An annual contribution of $25 million was expected prior to each race, but now Susan Combs who controls the state’s finances has said, “When the United States Grand Prix was formally announced, it was the only Formula 1 race scheduled in the US. During the past 18 months, organizers have taken many steps to bring high-profile motor racing to Central Texas, including the development of the Circuit of the Americas, and the announcement of the global MotoGP and V8 Supercar race series starting in 2013.

“The recent announcement of an annual Formula 1 race in New Jersey is a concern, as additional races have the potential to reduce the number of attendees to a Texas race, thereby decreasing the economic impact. Additionally, the reports of a slowdown in construction at the Circuit of the Americas, and recently publicized disagreements between the race rights-holder and the circuit developers have prompted speculation about whether the Austin race will even occur.”

2011 Abu Dhabi GP: Post-race press conference

2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Well there’s something you don’t see every day; a Formula One podium with no Red Bull drivers present. It’s been 19 races since that last happened (2010 Korean GP). Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, tortured soul, apparently, has given his life new meaning by winning the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

As can sometimes be the case in F1 there was action aplenty on lap one before boredom set in. So it proved at Yas Marina when Sebastien Vettel made a clean get away only to spin out of the race thanks to a tyre failure. Hamilton then made sure his McLaren led the remaining laps that counted, only surrendering his lead during his two pit stops.

Likewise, Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso made a ripping start and was quickly up three places into P2 half way through the first lap and that’s where he stayed. Jenson Button was the only one on the podium to earn his money really. The McLaren driver had a reasonable scrap with Mark Webber. They swapped places a couple of times, but ultimately the DRS overtaking zones favoured the McLaren as Red Bull’s achilles heel of poor top speed left Webber powerless to defend.

Due to a woeful first pit stop Webber then found himself behind Felipe Massa. Can you imagine the embarrassment! For Mark’s second stop RBR gambled by sending him back out on soft tyres, but with clear track ahead of him it was hoped he could build enough of gap over Massa to stay clear when he made his compulsory final stop to fit the harder compound tyres. In the end it was a formality after Rob Smedley radioed Massa to say, ” Felipe, your rear tyres are faster than your fronts, do you understand?” The subsequent spin by Massa indicates he understood.

At the back of the field Daniel Ricciardo lost position to his HRT teammate, but managed to work hard to establish a comfortable gap over Liuzzi. However, an electrical failure ended Ricciardo’s race with just three laps to go.

After the break you can read what the first three drivers had to say in the post-race press conference.

2011 Abu Dhabi GP: Qualifying press conference

2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Once again Sebastian Vettel proved his qualifying prowess by putting his Red Bull on pole position for the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It is his fourteenth pole for the year and equals the record for most poles a single season with Nigel Mansell’s efforts in 1992.

Incredibly, Vettel, now on 29 career pole positions, needs just five more to move into third in the all-time list, behind Michael Schumacher (68) and Ayrton Senna (65).

Second fastest at Yas Marina was Lewis Hamilton. The McLaren driver had been the form driver of the practice sessions and was quickest in Q1 and Q2, but his best lap of 1:38.622 could not match Vettel’s time of 1:38.481.

Jenson Button completed the familiar trend of McLaren and Red Bull qualifying in the top three with a 1:38.631 lap time.

Australian drivers Mark Webber (Red Bull; 1:38.858) and Daniel Ricciardo (HRT; 1:44.641) qualified fourth and twenty-first respectively.

Comments from the first three can be read below.

Joint statement on the Lotus position

2011 German Grand Prix

The two warring Lotus factions have issued a joint statement that proves everyone really does live happily ever after. In the public eye, at least. We expect behind closed doors there have been many toys thrown out of cots.

Apparently the two parties signed off an agreement in the last week or so with the terms to remain confidential.

Stick with us, this next bit might get a bit confusing. The brands ‘Lotus’ and ‘Team Lotus’ will be reunited under the Group Lotus banner. As previously reported, the former owners of the Team Lotus brand, 1Malaysia Team Racing, will become known as the Caterham F1 Team.

In 2012 we expect Lotus will continue with the black and gold livery and Caterham F1 has declared its intention to maintain its green and yellow colours.

The loving words of the joint statement can be read in full after the break. We suggest you imagine Dany Bahar, Group Lotus CEO, and Tomy Fernandes,  1Malaysia Team Racing owner, in a passionate embrace as you read the fairy tale below.
