WEBBER WINS IN GERMANY!

Mark Webber wins 2009 F1 German Grand Prix

Mark Webber has driven a magnificent race to claim his first ever Grand Prix victory. It was the first win by an Australian driver since Alan Jones won the 1981 US Grand Prix.

Webber started aggressively from pole position at the Nürburgring track, but couldn’t hold off a fast charging Rubens Barichello who led into the first corner. Lewis Hamilton, too, made a great start and headed Webber into the first corner but the Briton then ran wide and suffered a puncture, effectively ending his race.

The Australian was handed a drive through penalty for initiating contact with Barichello in the lead up to the first corner. Opinions in race commentary were divided as to whether the penalty was justified. Fortunately, it mattered not, as Webber’s outright pace and two stop strategy was superior to the Brawn GP three stop plan.

Webber has often had promising results ruined by bad luck. Today, though, the F1 gods were shining on the Aussie. After Barichello’s first pit stop he got caught behind Felipe Massa. The precious seconds lost by Rubens here allowed Webber to close the time surrendered to the Brawn machine following his drive through penalty.

Once that hurdle was overcome Webber looked in the best position to win the race. His grip on the race win tightened further when Barichello had a re-fuelling mishap at his second stop which cost valuable seconds.

Red Bull Racing got Webber back out quickly, and safely, after his second stop and from that point on the Australian enjoyed a clear run to the line, winning the 2009 German Grand Prix.

Webber’s Red Bull Racing teammate Sebastien Vettel finished the race in second, ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa.

Mark Webber claims first F1 pole in Germany

Mark Webber claims first F1 pole

Mark Webber has made the most of difficult conditions in qualifying at the German Grand Prix to claim his first ever Formula One pole position. The Australian finished ahead of the Brawn GP duo of Rubens Barichello (2nd) and, championship leader, Jenson Button (3rd). Webber’s Red Bull Racing teammate, Sebastien Vettel, qualified in fourth.

Webber, clearly elated at starting from P1 says he will be trying hard to win his maiden Grand Prix tomorrow, “I’ve been close to getting pole a few times in the past. Today we’re here and the team has done a great job.

“A huge thanks to all the team, both here and in the factory and I hope that it can be my first win tomorrow. We’re in a fantastic position to do it. Obviously these guys (Barrichello and Button) have had a very strong season and will push us, but we’re looking forward to a fight. I’m up for trying to take my first race win tomorrow if I can.”

More driver quotes can be accessed at Formula1.com.

I’m sure I speak for all AUSmotive readers when I say best of luck to car #14 for tomorrow’s race. To celebrate Webber’s pole position click below to complete a 14-pic image gallery from Webber in practice and qualifying this weekend.

Sydney’s Eastern Creek bids for World GT1 round

FIA GT Champsionship

The current European-based FIA GT Championship is set to be replaced by a new World GT1 Championship in 2010. A preliminary calendar has Round 2 being held in Australia. Sydney’s Eastern Creek has stepped forward making an official bid to host that round.

Judging by some of the comments from the series promoter, UK-based SRO Motorsports Group, the Creek looks to be a shoe-in, “Eastern Creek’s facilities and track design benefit from a Grade 2 FIA Homologation, which is the level required to host a round of the FIA GT1 World Championship,” SRO President and CEO Stephane Ratel said.

“One of the attractions of the venue is that it is within the boundaries of one of the world’s most desirable cities, and it is walk-in-walk-out.”

A truly global franchise, the GT1 category will attract competition from the likes of Aston Martin, Audi, Ferrari and Chevrolet. Nissan, Ford and Lamborghini have already committed to the 2010 Championship.

Eastern Creek is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2009, being awarded hosting rights for the GT1 party would be a fitting celebration. A final decision will be made in October.

Television coverage of the 2009 FIA GT Championship can be seen in Australia on One HD, check your local guides for details.

Red Bull GP iPhone app

Red Bull Racing have recently launched a free app for the Apple iPhone. These YouTube clips, featuring a cheeky Mark Webber (kind of), give a pretty good intro as to what you can expect.

After mucking around with the app for a few minutes I have to say it is a must have for all F1 fans. Not only does it contain a bunch of photos, videos and stats for the Red Bull Racing F1 team, it also includes full qualifying and race results for all Grands Prix so far in 2009.

In addition to that the season points tally for drivers and constructors is all yours at a swipe of the screen. Also included are track layouts for all circuits on the 2009 F1 calendar.

Click here to launch the Red Bull GP page in iTunes.

Mad Max 2

Max Mosley

Formula One is living up to its billing as a real life Bold and the Beautiful with last week’s peace deal already looking dodgy. Apparently Max Mosley didn’t like being referred to as a ‘dictator’ by FOTA President, Luca di Montezemolo, and is considering going back on his plan to leave his role as FIA President in October.

Mad Max also reckons FOTA have been making misleading comments to the media about his leadership style and the reasons behind his departure. With his ego damaged Mosley got a bit red in the face and rushed off to write a letter to di Montezemolo which made his thoughts very clear, “If you wish the agreement we made to have any chance of survival, you must rectify your actions.”

Mosley continued in the letter, which was leaked to the media (ironically), “Given your and FOTA’s deliberate attempt to mislead the media, I now consider my options open. At least until October, I am president of the FIA with the full authority of that office.

“After that it is the FIA member clubs, not you or FOTA, who will decide on the future leadership of the FIA.” So there!

Looks like there is going to be plenty more puzzled stares to camera between now and October.

Webber attends SBK then says ‘try the veal’

Mark Webber at SBK

Mark Webber spent last weekend watching the SBK round at Donington. While he was there he made a few wise cracks for the crew at Jalopnik. The above image was captioned by Webber with the following:

“Is that down under macho enough or shall I grab the girl in green with the umbrella?”

There’s plenty more where that came from as well. Maybe Mark can supplement his income with a few comedy gigs at Queanbeyan Leagues club during the off season.

At least Webber now has the luxury of cracking jokes at his own leisure, rather than driving one. Fingers crossed his maiden GP win is not too far away.

Chris Atkinson to star in MINI Challenge

Chris Atkinson - MINI Challenge Uber Star

Ex-World Rally Championship regular Chris Atkinson will be driving MINI’s Uber-Star racecar at the next round of the Australian MINI Challenge, the inaugural Townsville race, on 10–12 July.

Forming part of the support program for the V8 Supercars, the Townsville round will be taking place on a new 2.87km street circuit. The course looks to have a good mix of high speed and flowing corners, the latter will suit the MINIs very well.

The Townsville round will also see another first for the MINI Challenge—an optional twin driver format. The format will introduce a 60 second minimum compulsory pit-stop for a driver change. You can read more about that here.

Atkinson has been at a bit of a loose end this year since the demise of the Subaru World Rally Team. He has a role with the Citröen Junior Team, but that doesn’t provide the regular action a man of his talent and ability craves, so he is keen to trade the dirt for some closed circuit action.

“I’ve been hearing a lot about MINI Challenge and a lot about the new Townsville circuit, so when the chance came up to try them both out I didn’t hesitate,” he told MINI Challenge organisers.

He is not daunted by the change of technology either, “if anything my 4WD experience will help in the front wheel drive MINI car,” Atkinson believes, “sometimes there are a few parallels between 4WD and front wheel drive. I’ll have that on my side anyway and hopefully that compensates for my lack of consistent road racing experience.”

Atkinson has driven just two competitive closed circuit events, two very admirable enduro races, the Nürburgring 24 hour and the Bathurst 12 hour.

Stay tuned to AUSmotive for more MINI Challenge news as it comes to hand. If you missed the action form the last round at Symmons Plains, you can catch up with the TV highlights here.

Mark Webber takes bridesmaid duties again

Mark Webber - RB5 2009

Red Bull Racing have dominated the action at the British Grand Prix this weekend, claiming their second one-two race win of the year, following their earlier success in China. Sadly, for fans of Australia’s Mark Webber, it was bridesmaid duties again as young gun Sebastien Vettel did most of the dominating.

Webber looked supreme in the first two stages of qualifying on Saturday, but once Vettel claimed pole position that was all she wrote. The German lead the race from start to finish and seemed largely untroubled on his way to his third GP win.

Speaking before the race Mark Webber, starting from the second row, explained he needed to get past the Brawn GP of Rubens Barichello, starting from P2, early on the first lap or else the race would be a procession. He didn’t, and it was.

Mark did finally get ahead of Rubens due to some quick work in the pits from his crew and that settled the podium positions for the race. Championship leader Jenson Button didn’t really figure at all in his home Grand Prix and managed to grab a few points by finishing the race in sixth place.

Button’s healthy points buffer means he is still the man to beat in the title race. He is now on 64 points, followed by Barichello is on 41 points, with Vettel on 39 and Webber on 35.5 points.

Red Bull made some technical changes to their car this weekend, and clearly they have worked very well. Stay tuned for the German Grand Prix in three weeks time to see if the RB5 can maintain the pressure on the BrawnGP cars and force a real fight for the 2009 title.
