What happens when you meet your heroes?

Chris Harris drives the Ford RS200 and Audi Sport Quattro

It’s often said that you should never meet your heroes. The fear being they can never live up to your massive expectations. We’re not sure if your hero is an inanimate object if the the same can be said or not. What we do know is if we were ever offered the chance to drive our automotive heroes we’d bite off the hand making the offer with extreme enthusiasm.

For us our heroes would be the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, the McLaren F1 or Porsche Carrera GT. Throw in a Ferrari F40 for good measure. For Chris Harris, two of his automotive heroes are the Ford RS200 and Audi Sport Quattro. Two cars made in limited numbers of 200 for the sole purpose of meeting Group B rally regulations.

True icons they are, but can they live up to the hype? Check out the video after the break to find out.

Jari-Matti Latvala wins 2012 Rally Sweden

Jari-Matti Latvala, Rally Sweden

Jari-Matti Latvala has answered Loeb’s opening win of the year by guiding his Ford Fiesta RS WRC to victory at Rally Sweden on the weekend. It’s the sixth time in a row Ford has won the event.

The 26-year-old Finn took the lead on the opening day and enjoyed strong competition at times from former teammate Mikko Hirvonen in the Citroën DS3 WRC. Despite suffering a puncture on the last day, Latvala was able to secure his win with a margin of 16.6 seconds over Hirvonen. Privateer Mads Ostberg rounded out the top three in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC, a further 22.2 seconds behind Hirvonen.

Sebastien Loeb (Citroën) crashed out of contention early in the event and the same fate befell Dani Sordo (Prodrive/MINI).

Loeb was able to recover and finish the rally in sixth place, which keeps him at the head of the drivers’ championship, seven points ahead of Hirvonen and 10 points clear of Solberg.

The Ford World Rally Team isn’t great at making pics easily available, but they do produce a fine highlights reel, which you can see after the break.

The WRC heads to warmer climes for its next event, Rally Mexico (8–11 March).

Prodrive loses BMW factory support

2012 MINI WRC

BMW has today released a statement confirming what we already knew; they will be cutting full factory support from Prodrive for its MINI WRC program. However, Prodrive will continue as a factory-supported privateer team—Dani Sordo in the lead car, with the second car sold on a pay-per-drive basis. They will also continue to build customer MINI WRCs on behalf of BMW.

So, what at first seems like a sorry picture for Prodrive and would seem to put a major dent in the enormous goodwill the return of MINI to the world rally stage has earned may not be so bad.

Prodrive chairman, David Richards, explains, “Fundamentally, the nature of the relationship between Prodrive and MINI will not change,” he said. “We will still be working very closely with them on the test program for the car and, in fact, the development of the car will be enhanced by this news for reasons which will soon become clear. There will be more resource for the development of the MINI, which will further improve the performance of the car in the future.”

BMW will now lend its support to the Motorsport Italia-operated WRC Team MINI Portugal. They will run a two car team in all remaining races in 2012 to will be driven by Portuguese pair Armindo Araújo and co-driver Miguel Ramalho, as well as Brazilian duo Paulo Nobre and co-driver Edu Paula.

Dr Kay Segler, Senior Vice President MINI Business Coordination and Brand Management said: “I am delighted that the future of MINI in the WRC has been secured on a long-term basis

“We remain convinced that the sport of rallying is perfectly suited to our brand. The situation we now find ourselves in means the MINI Motorsport family can, and will, continue to grow on the rally scene. With three podiums from just seven starts in the world championship, the MINI John Cooper Works WRC has already emphatically proven its potential.

“With its great enthusiasm and hard work, the Prodrive team has played a major role in the remarkable sporting success we have achieved on our initial outings with the MINI John Cooper Works WRC. On behalf of MINI Motorsport, I would like to thank everyone at Prodrive for their efforts so far and we look forward to working with them in support of our MINI John Cooper Works WRC customers in the future.”

BMW ready to cancel Prodrive’s WRC contract?

Dani Sordo, MINI WRC, 2012 Rallye Monte Carlo

It’s one week until Rally Sweden and Autosport brings word that the BMW Group is expected to terminate its contract with Prodrive later today. This news brings the future of the MINI WRC program into question.

A BMW Group source has allegedly revealed, “There was a chance this might have happened last year, but in the end it was decided to wait until after Monte Carlo. The decision has now been taken at board level and will be communicated in due course.”

When contacted by Autosport, Richard Taylor from Prodrive claimed, “That’s news to me. There’s no question of that, no question at all. The team is on its way to Sweden for the pre-event test as we speak. MINI remains committed to the programme and to supporting customers.

“We all want to see the MINI John Cooper Works WRC out there on the stages and that’s what we will see with Prodrive running the cars on Rally Sweden next week.”

You’ll recall Kris Meeke is currently on the sidelines after the team didn’t have the funding to keep him on a full-time basis. His seat is being sold to teh highest bidder on a race-by-race basis.

The unease of the BMW–Prodrive relationship is now becoming clearer and it’s understood finances have been central to those difficulties almost since the relationship began.

It’s believed BMW is now deciding if it should hand over the running of the team to another firm, with an Italian group supposedly in the frame, or quit the WRC altogether.

Sebastien Loeb wins 2012 Rallye Monte Carlo

Sebastien Loeb, Citroen DS3 WRC, 2012 Rallye Monte Carlo

Sebastien Loeb has opened the defence of his eighth world title in grand style with a comfortable win in the Rallye Monte Carlo. The French maestro, who turns 38 next month, and his co-driver Daniel Elena showed no signs of slowing down winning the rally by almost three minutes from Dani Sordo (MINI).

The tricky conditions, with a mixture of dry and icy roads, as well as regular snow, made tyre selection difficult. It took Loeb until SS4 to claim the lead, which he did not surrender for the remainder of the event.

Loeb explains it was tyre strategy that gave him such a comfortable winning margin, “It’s a big gap to second, but I wouldn’t say that this was an easy win. We had to deal with all sorts of conditions and my lead was largely built on better tyre choices, which were mainly down to the work of Citroën Racing’s technical team and our tyre partner Michelin.

“For the first time in a long time in WRC, we were able to choose between five types of tyres and we always managed to pick the right tyres for the circumstances.”

The 2003 world champion Petter Solberg (Ford) claimed the final podium step behind Loeb and Sordo. While Loeb’s new teammate Mikko Hirvonen finished his first rally for Citroën in fourth place.

More snow and ice will face the teams at Rally Sweden, which is the next event on the WRC calendar and starts in just under three weeks.

WRC teams shake it down before full Monte

MINI WRC

The Monte Carlo Rally, fondly referred to as ‘The Monte’, is resuming its rightful and traditional position as the first WRC event of the year. Yesterday the top WRC teams were out in Valence giving their machines a final shakedown before taking on the full rally.

You can read previews from Citroën, Ford, MINI and Volkswagen at their official websites. Volkswagen? Yes, even though the Polo WRC won’t make its debut until next year the team’s lead driver Sebastien Ogier will be competing in 2012 for stablemates Skoda in the SWRC category.

We anticipate this season with renewed interest thanks to the introduction of MINI as a major player. Although, thanks to what appears to be a fractured relationship between MINI and Prodrive, it’s perhaps not as major as we would all like it to be. We believe the budget issues facing the MINI WRC team are due to BMW redirecting part of the team’s funding towards their return to DTM racing.

Hopefully Prodrive can secure enough sponsorship to put Kris Meeke back in his seat, and with Volkswagen to follow next year, it will be great to see up to four teams competing for outright honours in 2013.

Video of the shakedown in Valence can be seen after the break.

MINI WRC team ready for Monte Carlo Rally

2012 MINI WRC

After something of a false start when they missed the registration deadline for the 2012 WRC season, MINI will be ready to field two cars at this week’s Monte Carlo Rally (17–22 January).

There’s no good news for Kris Meeke, though, who will miss the first two races, at least, to cashed up drivers able to help cover the budget shortfalls faced by the MINI–Prodrive partnership. Frenchman Pierre Campana will be at the wheel for the Monte and Swedish driver Patrik Sandell will take the seat for Rally Sweden (9–12 February).

In other garage news for the MINI WRC team Prodrive Chairman Dave Richards will no longer hold the role of team principal. Dave Wilcox, Prodrive technical director, will takeover the head role.

“It was always my intention to take a step back in the team’s second season and pass the responsibility over to Dave,” said David Richards, chairman of Prodrive. “During the last year he has proved he has all the right skills to lead the team and I have no doubt the MINI WRC Team will continue to go from strength to strength under his leadership.”

Obviously the Monte Carlo Rally is a special event for MINI, following three wins in 1964, 1965 and 1967. It’s just a shame their return hasn’t quiet begun in the most ideal circumstances. Dani Sordo showed some great promise in the limited program run by MINI last year; who knows, perhaps a fairytale win could be on the cards.

MINI’s WRC woes continue as Meeke is dropped

MINI WRC

MINI WRC driver pairing of Kris Meeke (pictured left) and his co-driver Paul Nagle have been dropped, Autocar reports. At this stage the shock decision has not been officially confirmed and Prodrive chairman Dave Richards has been unavailable for comment.

It’s understood MINI and Prodrive have struggled to find enough sponsorship to keep Meeke/Nagle in their roles for 2012. The Irish duo still have two years remaining on their contract. The status of lead driver Dani Sordo (pictured right) remains unaffected and he will drive in all 12 races next year.

Apparently MINI will auction off their second car to the highest bidder on an event-by-event basis. It is hoped Meeke and Nagle will remain with the team behind the scenes and could return to competition if enough funding can be raised.

It’s the second blow for MINI and Prodrive following the news before Christmas that the team had missed the deadline to lodge their official entry for the 2012 season. Perhaps we now have a reason why.

MINI misses major milestone

MINI WRC

MINI has missed the deadline for official entry into the 2012 WRC series, Autosport reports.

It’s not immediately clear who is to blame for the oversight, but it seems to be the Munich side of the BMW–Prodrive relationship. As you would expect both parties are now desperately trying to come to a new agreement with the FIA to remedy the situation.

A BMW source commenting on the slip-up has said, “We have made two podiums already in the development year, we can’t fail but to be very happy with what we are achieving. There are a few things to talk about and time has beaten us on the deadline, but the cars will be in Monte Carlo—we couldn’t miss the MINI’s return to that rally.”

There is speculation that the BMW–Prodrive relationship is under some stress, this mistake won’t help things greatly. From the FIA’s point of view they would be foolish to cause MINI any long-term pain over this, hopefully, minor drama.

In other news, both Ford and Citroën managed to keep their paperwork in order and are officially confirmed for the WRC in 2012.

Citroën DS3 WRC prepares for Monte Carlo

Sebastien Loeb, Citroen DS3 WRC

It doesn’t seem all that long ago we were telling you about Sebastien Loeb’s eighth world championship. But already he’s back at work testing for next month’s Monte Carlo Rally (17–22 January).

After the break we bring you two videos of the Citroën DS3 WRC in action, first it’s Loeb at the wheel, then his new teammate Mikko Hirvonen gets to find out what his new car is like to drive in the snow.

Citroën has also announced reigning Dakar champion and WRC journeyman Nasser Al-Attiyah will be joining their team from Rally Sweden. This will allow Al-Attiyah to defend his Dakar crown, although with Volkswagen now focusing on their own WRC effort he will be driving a Hummer in South America.

Also signed to Citroën on a reduced campaign is 22-year-old Belgian Thierry Neuvile, who has progressed through the ranks from the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

VIDEO: MINI WRC Team 2011 highlights

MINI WRC Team

MINI and Prodrive returned to the world rally stage with their Countryman WRC this year. In a staged re-introduction to the sport they took part in only six of the 13 events. Dani Sordo still managed to make quite an impact, with a third place finish in Germany and coming within 6.3 seconds of a win in France.

The MINI WRC Team has condensed its debut season into a sub-three minute highlights package, which can be seen after the break. Also included is Kris Meeke giving a brief tour of the MINI WRC cockpit.

Ogier signs with Volkswagen WRC team

Sebastien Ogier & Julien Ingrassia, Volkswagen Motorsport

French duo Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia have quickly moved on from the disappointment of their dismissal from the Citroën WRC team by signing a three-year deal with Volkswagen Motorsport.

The pair will spend 2012 fine tuning the Polo R WRC in preparation for Volkswagen’s debut WRC season in 2013. With seven WRC victories under their belts Ogier and Ingrassia have that classic blend of youth and experience and their signing represents a strong show of faith for the start up VW team.

Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management for the Development Division spoke with enthusiasm at the news, “I am very happy about Sébastian Ogier and Julien Ingrassia joining us. Both of them are important pieces of the puzzle on our way towards building a successful team in the World Rally Championship. It is also a mark of confidence for our team if such a strong pairing opts for a new team in the WRC that is still in the process of being developed.”

There’s more from Volkswagen Motorsport after the break, including pics and video highlights from the announcement.
