2011 Belgian Grand Prix

As we headed into the mid-season break last month it seemed as though Ferrari and McLaren had closed the gap on Red Bull. Combined they had won three races in a row. However, the Belgian Grand Prix showed that Red Bull were having no more of that and managed to score a comfortable 1-2 victory; the team’s tenth Formula One quinella.

In the end Vettel and Webber took the top two places with a reasonable degree of comfort. Not a bad result, really, when you consider their pre-race tyre dramas or that the high speed nature of Spa is not really suited to the RB7.

A special mention to Michael Schumacher, too, who finished a very creditable fifth after starting from last place on the grid. Notably, Nico Rosberg was one place behind in sixth, despite storming to the lead on the first lap.

After the break there’s a further 95 images to help you recapture the vibe.

2011 Belgian GP: Post-race press conference

2011 Belgian Grand Prix

Sebastien Vettel won his and Red Bull Racing’s first Belgian Grand Prix overnight. In doing so he opened up a 92pt lead in the drivers’ championship race on his teammate Mark Webber. Jenson Button (McLaren) put in a sterling effort to finish on the podium after starting from P13.

Before the race it was reported Red Bull had concerns over tyre blistering and their strategy to pit both men relatively early paid dividends. Especially for Webber who started from P3 on the grid and found himself in mid-pack by the first corner after a terrible getaway. A very long sting on the harder tyres gave him good track position, which he was able to maintain after his second and final pit stop.

Webber provided the highlight of the race as well, making one of the best overtaking moves of the year. He held his inside line on Fernando Alonso (Ferrari), who was exiting from pit lane, on the entry into Eau Rouge and managed to squeeze out the dual world champion with great courage. It was breathtaking. Alonso was very competitive on the soft tyres, but he dropped out of contention once he moved to the harder primes. He finished the race in fourth.

Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) was also looking very good early in proceedings until he had minor contact with Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber) on lap 13. That was enough, though, to fire Hamilton into the armco and out of the race. Despite some early concerns he appeared okay and there have been no reports of injury. The incident saw the Safety Car deployed for a total of four laps while the track was cleared. Hamilton has since accepted responsibility for making contact and apologised to Kobayashi.

At the first corner there was a lot of incidental contact for the midfield runners with carbon fibre flying everywhere. Daniel Ricciardo (HRT) managed to avoid that and take advantage. He was running as high as P15 until he retired from the race suffering vibration at the left-rear of his car.

The post-race press conference featuring the first three drivers can be read after the break. F1 is back in two weeks time for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

2011 Belgian GP: Qualifying press conference

2011 Belgian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) has shown the summer break hasn’t affected his form by taking his ninth pole position of the year in qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix.

In a rain affected program Mark Webber (Red Bull) looked sharp and for a while it looked like his best lap (1:49.376) might claim pole position. Which would have been a great way to celebrate his birthday and new contract extension. However, Vettel and Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) were the last of the front runners to cross the line and they made the most of the drying track.

Hamilton was first and he also did enough to claim P1 (1:48.730) but the moment last just seconds as Vettel cut four tenths from Hamilton’s best (1:48.298).

Controversy reigned at the close of Q2 when it appeared as though Pastor Maldonado (Williams) deliberately ran into Hamilton, following some minor contact at the chicane on the close of the previous lap. The Venezuelan was penalised five places on the grid and will now start from P21. Hamilton was handed a reprimand, which appears lucky after reviewing replays that showed he moved towards Maldonado moments before they made contact.

A combination of wet conditions and mechanical gremlins made it tough going for Daniel Ricciardo (HRT) who posted the slowest lap in Q3 and was well out of the 107% qualifying zone. He wasn’t the only one though, with Liuzzi (HRT) and d’Ambrosio (Virgin) also missing the mark. It is expected all three will be allowed to race.

Meanwhile, a brief and rare pause to feel sorrow for Michael Schumacher who didn’t get to post a time at all during qualifying after a wheel fell off his car during his out lap in Q3. A rather symbolic moment for his 20th anniversary celebrations given his form since his comeback to F1.

A transcript from the post-qualifying press conference featuring Vettel, Hamilton and Webber can be read below.

Mark Webber confirmed for Red Bull in 2012

Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing

Mark Webber’s Formula One career will extend into an eleventh season after he re-signed with Red Bull Racing for the 2012 season. The one-year contract extension is a perfect way for Mark to celebrate his 35th birthday today.

“I want to continue racing at the top in Formula One so it’s no-brainer to remain at Red Bull Racing for another year,” Webber said. “My motivation to achieve the best results possible both for myself and the team is still very high.

“Over the past five years, we have worked hard and proved that we can design and build a competitive and championship-winning car, and I’m looking forward to putting the car and myself on the limit again each and every race weekend in 2012.”

UPDATE: Pics of Mark’s birthday celebrations have been added below.

Webber: 2012 deal with Red Bull is ‘not far away’

Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, Mark Webber says a new deal to drive with Red Bull Racing in 2012 is “not far away”.

Mark says things are moving in the right direction, but when asked by Autosport if a new contract is a formality he replied, “It will be cheeky for me to say yes. My decision has to be taken into account although the team’s decision is pretty clear. Obviously Dietrich has been great, as have all the boys and everyone at the team. All will become clear shortly.”

Speaking broadly about his longer term future and his partnership in a GP3 team with Christan Horner, Webber said, “The GP3 operation is going well, so it is enjoyable—but I will not be immersing myself whenever that day comes. I still really enjoy the car, and there is a huge chance I will be racing in F1 next year… so that decision will come in a few years.”

Reading between the lines it sounds to us as though the door to the exit on Mark’s career with Red Bull is, if not open, slightly ajar.

VIDEO: David Coulthard takes F1 off-road

David Coulthard, Red Bull Racing

David Coulthard has become the first person to drive a Formula One car on the new Circuit of The Americas track in Austin, Texas. Yes, that’s it there in all it’s dirty and bumpy glory.

The promotion has certainly proved to be a nice publicity stunt, gaining media attention around the world. But seeing as we’re still over 12 months away from the 2012 United States Grand Prix, it also gave us a nice preview of the new circuit.

The 5.47km track layout has been known for some time, however this is the first opportunity we’ve had at seeing the dramatic elevation changes in the course.

Tavo Hellmund, CoTA Chairman says, “We’re going to build the closest thing to a traditional old school Grand Prix track from the 1950s and 60s. With the elevation, with the fast corners [and] with the technical corners.”

Sounds promising. (Video after the break.)

VIDEO: Texans love donuts

As you know Formula One will be making a return to the United States in 2012 at a new purpose-built racetrack in Austin, Texas. To help promote the event and build the profile of F1 down south David Coulthard took the Red Bull Racing promo car to the city to see what’s cooking.

The crowd were happy to hoot and holler when DC lit up his rear tyres, but will they really embrace a motorsport category that turns right, as well as left?

Mark Webber upside down in a helicopter

Throughout his career Mark Webber has shown he’s quite prepared to push himself way beyond accepted limits. On track, or perhaps that should be off track, we’ve seen Mark flipping race cars. His most notable examples of that were at Valencia last year and Le Mans in 1999. Webber has also pushed past the acceptable with his ad for Canberra Milk. Now, thanks to his connection with Red Bull, he has flipped and rolled a helicopter too.

Helmut Marko: 2012 last hurrah for Mark Webber

2011 Australian Grand Prix

While talking about the F1 future of young Aussie Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull Racing consultant Dr Helmut Marko revealed his belief that Mark Webber will “probably retire” from Formula One at the end of the 2012 season.

Marko told Australian TV station One, “As with the other Australian, he is probably going to retire in 2012. We need to find one of our juniors who can replace Mark Webber.”

Confirming Ricciardo’s F1 career is entirely in his own hands Marko continued, “First of all, he has to beat his teammate, and he has to progress.

“He is losing too much in the pit stops, and losing too much when he is being lapped so he must get the feeling.”

When Marko was asked if the young Western Australian was likely to get a seat with Toro Rosso he replied, “If he is doing well, yes.”

2011 Hungarian GP: Post-race press conference

2011 Hungarian Grand Prix

Jenson Button (McLaren) found the perfect way to celebrate his 200th F1 race overnight by winning a rain-affected Hungarian Grand Prix. In the early to middle stages of the race he and teammate Lewis Hamilton entertained with some great wheel-to-wheel racing in slippery conditions. Each of the drivers made mistakes with the other there to pounce.

In the end poor tyre strategy and a stop-go penalty for obstructing traffic while recovering from a spin cost Lewis Hamilton any chance of the win, and he did well to finish fourth.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) made a good start from pole position, but ran wide later in the first stint to allow Hamilton to inherit the lead. Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) also endured a tough race, including an uncharacteristic poor start, and was happy to finish in third place

Mark Webber (Red Bull) followed form by losing two places off the starting line, but was able to work his way back through the field with good tyre strategy. Unfortunately, late in the race, he was spooked by a quick rain shower and came in for intermediate tyres which he changed after just one flying lap. He was in a creditable fourth place after rejoining from his fifth pit stop. But Hamilton, who stopped six times, easily closed the gap and made the pass.

Daniel Ricciardo (Hispania Racing) enjoyed his highest finish in a Grand Prix so far. He placed eighteenth, two places ahead of his teammate Tonio Liuzzi.

Vettel managed to extend the lead over his closest rivals. His 234 points gives him a comfortable cushion over Webber (149pts), Hamilton (146pts) and Alonso (145pts). Red Bull, meanwhile, has an astonishing 103pt lead over its closest competitor in the manufacturers’ championship.

There’s a three week break now until the Belgian Grand Prix in late August.
