New vehicle sales report – December 2009

FCAI banner

According to official VFACTS figures released earlier today new vehicle sales in Australia for 2009 reached 937,328, an overall drop of 7.4% compared to 2008.

November’s cracking results showed the motor industry was well on the way to financial recovery and  December followed suit registering 88,708 sales. Which sets a new record for the month.

FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar acknowledged the role of the Federal Government’s tax incentives for businesses in returning better than expected yearly figures, “The final outcome for the year has surpassed the industry’s original expectations by some 57,000 vehicles and a significant proportion of this additional volume can be attributed to the tax break.”

Toyota (200,191), Holden (119,658) and Ford (96,501) were the top three selling marques. Toyota’s stranglehold on top spot looks very secure, despite the highest selling car in Australia for 2009 being the Holden Commodore (44,387). The Corolla (39,013) and HiLux (38,457) rounded out the top three selling models nationwide.

Other notable performers were Audi, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen. But it seems most manufacturers have a positive spin to sell and a raft of press releases to that affect follow this article.

Audi, intent on chasing BMW for the top selling prestige marque, concluded 2009 with their fifth year of growth. Impressively, the German brand bettered last year’s record by over 20% while recording 11,310 sales. A perfect end to the local career of Audi Australia’s managing director, Joerg Hofmann. The hard task master will be returning home to Germany at the end of this month—see carsales interview from December 2009.

Mitsubishi have put the corpse of the Magna well behind it, achieving best ever annual sales for the Lancer (21,362) and Triton (18,182).

Volkswagen improved on its 2008 record year by selling over 30,000 vehicles for the first time under the Volkswagen Group Australia banner.

New vehicle sales report – November 2009

FCAI banner

Big news in the car game last month with numbers increasing by a massive 20% on sales registered in November 2008. Following a more moderate sales boost in October, the FCAI is shouting from the roof tops that the worst of doom and gloom is over, “This is an extraordinary result that provides further evidence that the market and the broader Australian economy are showing signs of recovery,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

Although, McKellar does acknowledge his colleagues have been given a nice helping hand, “The exceptional November figures could not have been achieved without the Federal Government’s small business tax break,” he said.

Seems as though business buyers like SUVs and light commercial vehicles, with segment figures increasing by 44% and 39% respectively. Overall new vehicle sales for 2009 tally 848,620. Despite the good news from the last two months, this figure is still 9.3% down on 2008 sales.

Nothing new to report in market leaders, so that means the top three sellers are Toyota, Holden and Ford.

More after the break.

New vehicle sales report – October 2009

FCAI banner

Good news for the car industry last month, with sales increasing for the first time since the middle of last year. Official VFACTS data shows sales were up 2.2 per cent last month when compared to October 2008.

“The industry is looking to round out the year on a positive note and we expect a further surge in sales as businesses move to take advantage of the successful tax break prior to the end of the year,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

However, the overall downward trend remains for year-to-date new vehicle sales, which are down 11.7 per cent compared to the same period last year (762,787 sales to date).

Toyota, Holden and Ford round out the usual top three placings for overall sales, but that hasn’t stopped a number of manufacturers from putting their spin on things. A bunch of press releases to that effect can be viewed after the jump.

New vehicle sales report – September 2009

FCAI banner

A further sign that things automotive and economic are beginning to look brighter is today’s news from VFACTS that 78,131 vehicles were sold last month. That’s an increase of 4,844 sales compared to the August results.

However, so we don’t forget where we are coming from the 2009 figures for September are down by almost 3,000 vehicles against September 2008. The big improver on last year’s results continues to be the luxury SUV segment (up 30.9%), joined by sports cars (up 17.1%) and compact SUVs (up 5.0%).

FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said, “The September figure demonstrates signs of consolidation in the new vehicle market.”

Overall year-to-date figures are down 13.1% with 2009 new car sales so far totalling 681,974. Toyota continues to be the country’s best seller (16,007), ahead of Holden (9,744) and Ford (8,427).

Chest pumping from BMW, Mazda, MINI and Toyota can be read after the jump (more ikely to be available tomorrow).

New vehicle sales report – August 2009

FCAI banner

Word on the street is that private buyers are starting to buy more cars. Sales data from VFACTS reports 73,287 vehicles drove out the door in August, a drop of 5.2% (4,036 vehicles) from the same month last year. August sales are also down 2,046 vehicles on July 2009.

Despite the comparative fall, sales in some market segments showed strong growth. This includes a very healthy increase of 19.2% for the luxury SUV market. Solid improvements for commercial vans (8.2%) and small cars (7.2%) were also posted.

“These figures indicate that private buyers are regaining confidence and re-entering the market,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

Year to date sales figures total 603,843 vehicles, which is 100,151 fewer sales than at the same point in 2008. Toyota remains in the top sales position for August with 15,994 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 9,505 and Ford with 7,623.

New vehicle sales report – July 2009

FCAI banner

The latest information from VFACTS tells us that business sales are continuing to prevent sales from falling too far. While June was a bumper month, July sales returned to a more usual figure for 2009, with 75,333 vehicles rolling off showrooms around the country. That’s a drop of 10.3% on July sales in 2008.

Unsurprisingly, sales in the small car segment have increased marginally by 2.7% compared to the same month last year. In contrast to the downsizing customers, though, is news that the sports car and SUV categories also increased sales by 10.3% and 2.4% respectively.

“There is evidence that there has been some flow-on from the very strong June sales result, particularly from buyers accessing the business tax break on new investments,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

“This has been a very successful stimulus measure and small businesses remain eligible for a 50 per cent tax break until the end of the year.”

Overall, yearly sales now total 530,566 which is almost 100,000 vehicles down on 2008 figures, or a drop of 15.3%.

New vehicle sales report – June 2009

FCAI banner

Despite much economic doom and gloom, June 2009 was the third highest selling month for new car sales in Australia’s history. A total of 102,847 vehicles were sold.

Around 45% of those sales were to business customers, proving beyond any doubt that the Government’s tax incentives fulfilled their role.

FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar stated, “The surge in business sales is directly attributed to the Federal Government’s business tax break and these figures provide clear evidence that this has been a very effective policy measure.

“Our analysis indicates that the business tax break has led to an additional 10,000 vehicles being sold over the past three months. That is a 10 to 12 per cent boost to business sales and a five per cent increase for the total market.”

Despite a boom June overall sales figures for 2009, unsurprisingly, are below those recorded at the same time last year. Almost 90,000 fewer vehicles have been sold on a year to date basis, representing a figure of -16.1%.

However, there are some shining lights with Audi having its best month on record and one of the few manufacturers to be increasing sales in 2009. Overall sales are up 10% on 2008 figures.

Mazda also signed off on a record sales month, with the new Mazda3 proving a hit selling more cars in one month than ever before as buyers look to downsize.

Likewise MINI enjoyed a great month locking in its best results yet for orders taken in a single month since its relaunch in 2001.

Finally, Subaru had its best ever month for Impreza sales. This is a genuine surprise as the view at AUSmotive HQ is that the Impreza is a bit unsightly these days.

Lots of chest beating below from industry bodies and bragging manufacturers.

New vehicle sales report – May 2009

FCAI banner

Official VFACTS data tells us that 75,439 new vehicles were sold in May. That’s around 13,000 cars (14.9 per cent) down on May 2008 figures.

If we delve a bit deeper we can see that the drop in sales to business buyers is around half the overall figure at 7.2 per cent. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries says this is due to the current tax bonus on offer, allowing up to 50 per cent tax deductions on new car sales to business purchasers.

“The business tax break is proving extremely effective, providing a much needed boost to vehicle sales and stimulating economic activity,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

Year-to-date figures, however, show a larger drop in sales with the current 2009 figure of 352,374 down 19.2 per cent at the same stage last year.

Toyota heads the charts so far in 2009 with 15,481 sales, ahead of Holden with 9,177 and Ford with 8,440.
