What if there was no Subaru WRX?

2014 Subaru WRX prototype

A bit over a week ago the next-gen Subaru WRX was seen in circulation at the Nürburgring. Today Autocar brings word that the WRX will not be sold in the UK. The reason given by Subaru UK is a little alarming, we think.

Subaru is now “primarily an SUV brand”, so says Paul Tunnicliffe, Managing Director of the official importer of Subaru to the UK.

Tunnicliffe added that emissions targets are partly to blame, “Things are now in a different place. That market is not as big as it used to be. The EC has strict CO2 targets, and unless you’re selling lots of hybrids or electric cars, a product like WRX STI is hard to justify.”

Okay, that’s the UK market and it doesn’t really affect us down here in the part of the world where the sun does shine. But what if there was no WRX? Would it matter any more? Has the WRX had its time?

For a period in the 1990s, when the hot hatch was facing extinction (in Australia at least), the Rex was the default option for those looking for a relatively cheap go fast new car. It started with a trickle, then by the early noughties became a tsunami with every Tom, Dick and Habib getting in on the action.

By the time the WRX had reached saturation point the hot hatch was reemerging. You could argue the new MINI helped reignite the craze. But once the Mk5 Golf GTI arrived the hot hatch was back in a very big way. Renault, too, was having a say in the matter and all of a sudden it seemed the once all-conquering WRX was the forgotten hero. Where the WRX was the only option, there were, and still are, many options able to tempt buyers away from the WRX.

So, if the next-gen WRX never comes, would anyone care? And if not what would it take to make the WRX relevant once again? We think making a faithful reproduction of the concept model shown in New York would be a better place to start than the Evo-like prototype you see above.

Holden VF Commodore ute at the Nürburgring

Holden VF Commodore ute

A quick shout out to Holden for going to the trouble of sending their VF Commodore ute to the Nürburgring for final chassis tuning ahead of its imminent release. Of course, with the car being so close to market launch you’d expect there won’t be too many opportunities to tweak the set up in any meaningful way.

Hey, you don’t think this was a marketing exercise by Holden just chasing a few clicks and publicity do you? No, they wouldn’t do that, there must be more to it than that.

Rush movie poster featuring Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt

The official twitter feed for Ron Howard’s F1 movie Rush has given us an advance viewing of one of the film’s promotional posters. It features Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt and was sent out with the following tweet:

“They say James Hunt spent two weeks shagging 33 stewardesses. Not bad. Make the most of your weekend.”

Nice work if you can get it! And the tale certainly lives up to the badge that Hunt used to wear on his overalls (see below).

Audi TT ultra quattro concept to rock Wörthersee

Audi TT ultra quattro concept

The annual Wörthersee show is just around the corner (8–10 May) and Audi is grabbing the headlines with this TT ultra quattro concept. It’s an über lightweight version of their TT which can reach 100km/h in 4.2 seconds.

At a mere 1111kg the trim and taut concept model has one kW for every 4.9kg, or to look at it another way, 3.6kg per horsepower. That’s thanks also to its 228kW (310hp)/400Nm 2.0 TFSI engine.

Carbon fibre reinforced polymer has been used throughout along with magnesium in the floor to help achieve the car’s low weight. Fibreglass bucket seats from the R8 GT save 22kg, while the wheels shed a further 20kg.

The brake system uses ceramic discs and aluminium calipers and the exhaust is made from titanium. The springs are made by a complex method using fibreglass reinforced plastic as well.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Audi put something like this in series production.

Schumacher to drive Nordschleife in F1 car

2011 Mercedes GP W02

Michael Schumacher’s first gig as an official Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador is perhaps one of the coolest things you will read today. Not only will the seven-time world champion get back in a Formula 1 car he’ll be doing so around Nürburgring Nordschleife. How cool is that!

Schumacher will pilot a 2011-spec Mercedes GP W02 for a demonstration lap around the ‘Ring during the 24 hour race weekend on 19 May. As you might expect he’s quite looking forward to it too.

“I have a lot of fond memories of the Nürburgring and am really looking forward to giving fans and friends from my home town of Kerpen, which is quite close to the Nürburgring, something to remember as they see me drive by,” Schumacher said.

“But it will be a fantastic experience for me too, driving along the Nordschleife in a state-of–the-art Formula 1 Silver Arrow, particularly in view of the fact that the Silver Arrow’s legend began here. Posting a lap in a modern Silver Arrow on the most beautiful and most testing circuit in the world, what a brilliant mix—it’s every motor racing driver’s dream!”

It will be the first time a contemporary Formula 1 car has been driven on the Nordschleife since Nick Heidfeld did so in a BMW Sauber F1.06 back in 2007 (see video below). No official lap time was recorded when Heidfeld drove the ‘Ring and Stefan Bellof’s 6 minute 11 second lap set in a Porsche 956 in 1983 remains the all-time ‘Ring record.

We’re not sure if Michael will be chasing that record, but imagine if he did he could easily break the 6 minute barrier. That would be wow!

Webber to decide 2014 future by mid-year

2013 Bahrain Grand Prix

Given the recent rumour that Mark Webber has already signed a five-year deal to race sportscars with Porsche from next year he was always going to be asked questions about it when he fronted the media in Bahrain last weekend.

Porsche has already denied the rumour to be fact, and indeed some reports suggest the rumour was leaked by Mark’s biggest detractor at Red Bull, Helmut Marko.

So what does Mark have to say about his future?

“I’ve never made a plan for future seasons in April before, so I’m probably not going to start now. I’m looking forward to Barcelona, Monaco, the races coming ahead, and then we’ll make some plans,” he told Red Bull owned Servus TV.

“I think towards the [European] summer, we’ll make a plan, like I always do.”

While he may have been disappointed to finish as low as seventh in his 200th race he says he still has what’s required to compete in F1.

“I’m still feeling very hungry and still have some very good results inside me, so that’s the most important thing.”

The 2014 Porsche rumour has been circulating for almost 12 months now and as a result had almost been accepted as fact by some, including AUSmotive it has to be said. But we’re starting to waver on that now and wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Mark continue his Formula 1 career next year. But who with? Unless Sebastian Vettel causes a sensation and leaves Red Bull, we can’t see Mark staying there.

VIDEO: Porsche 911 Cabrio v Jaguar F-Type V6S

Porsche 911 Cabriolet v Jaguar F-Type V6S

Tiff Needell on a track, in this case the Bedford Autodrome, is usually something to look forward to. But is it really the best place to compare a Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet against a Jaguar F-Type V6S?

The Porsche has 257kW to play with, while the Jag trumps that with 280kW on tap. Yet, the F-Type weighs 165kg more. So which is best?

To us the result of this Evo track battle doesn’t concern us and we can’t imagine any punter out there cross shopping these two cars would care too much either.

Perhaps we’re being a little shortsighted, but if you’re buying a convertible you’re more concerned with how flash you’re going to look when you park it in front of your local café before getting stuck into your skinny latté. Or something.

On that front, the Jag is miles ahead of the Porsche. We’ve no problems with a flashy Jag, that’s a great market for them to pursue, but a 911 should have a roof and its main purpose should be to drive in, not to pose in it.

Do you agree?

Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak revealed

Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak

Sebastien Loeb’s plaything for next month’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been further detailed by Peugeot. After offering a teaser of the 208 T16 Pikes Peak last week we now have more details to pass on.

Here’s the T16’s key stat: one horsepower per kilogram. Impressive, right? Now let’s consider the 208 T16 Pikes Peak weighs a mere 875kg. Yes, you’ve worked it out, that means the twin-turbo V6 engine lurking in the mid-rear of the car produces 875hp. Vive la cool!

On top of the quite staggering 1:1 power to weight ratio the 208 T16 features an all-wheel drive system and quite extreme aero package to ensure as much of that gobsmacking power as possible is used. Features such as the brakes, air intake and massive two metre rear wing have been developed further from the Le Mans winning 908 HDi rcaecar.

It’s also worth noting the extreme conditions in which the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb takes place. The start line is at 2865m above sea level and 156 corners later, on a now fully bitumised course, the finish line is at 4301m. That’s some altitude. And it also partly explains why Loeb needs such a huge headline power figure in his chase for outright victory in the Unlimited category.

Bruno Famin, Peugeot Sport Director, puts the demands of racing at altitude into some context: “In the case of a normally-aspirated engine, you basically lose one percent of the available power every 100 metres you climb.”

New 911 GT3 much faster than new Golf GTI!

Porsche 911 GT3 v Volkswagen Golf GTI

The new Porsche 911 GT3 is much faster than the new Volkswagen Golf GTI. No shit! But here’s the video to prove it. And doesn’t the new GT3 sound rather awesome. Actually, on upshift it doesn’t really sound like a normal double-clutch tranny either.

Anyway, these two cars, seen recently during Nürburgring industry testing, would happily sit inside the AUSmotive garage, shame only one of them is likely to do so.
