VIDEO: 1979 Castrol International Rally

Colin Bond, 1979 Castrol International Rally, Canberra

Frustrated that you can’t watch Rally Finland without a Foxtel account and want to get your WRC fix? Here’s some footage from 35 years ago that will remind you what rallying is all about. It’s from the 1979 Castrol International Rally, held in the forests around Canberra.

This is the home territory of your AUSmotive editor and while I usually stick to the tarmac when heading for the forests this is an area I know well.

Clearly, this was a simpler time when all you needed was a Ford Escort or a Datto 1600 (a Stanza if you were really fancy pants) and the balls to have a crack. T-shirts were the only attire needed behind the wheel and long sleeves only ever came out if it was raining. Even the pacenotes are low key.

Familiar names such as Greg Carr, George Fury, Kevin Bartlett and Colin Bond all feature and long-time motorsport fans from Australia will notice a relatively slim Will Hagon behind the mic on the victory dais.

A quick shoutout, too, for the Southern District Motorsport Association who played a key role in hosting the event and is still active today.

The clip runs for 50 minutes and if you set aside the time you should enjoy this.

[Thanks to Tim for the tip]

Dare to be different

Datsun 240Z

Following a couple of requests from the 911 video we posted last week here is the Datsun 240Z featured by Petrolcious late last year.

The 240Z is a classic sports car from a classic era for the genre. A time when rules were still being defined and expectations were still being explored. In many ways the legacy of a classic car can be measured by the number of times it is referenced by cars made well after the original hit the streets. Yep, the 240Z has a superb legacy.

We like this quote, first published by Car and Driver in 1970, which has been included in the video’s blurb:

“Datsun didn’t invent the overhead cam engine, or disc brakes, or independent suspension but it has a habit of incorporating these sophisticated systems into brilliantly conceived and easily affordable cars.”

The Datto is back!

Datsun 1200 ute

Carlos Ghosn, Nissan CEO, has announced they will be reviving the Datsun brand for use in new growth markets. From 2014 you’ll be able to buy a Datsun in India, Indonesia and Russia.

We reckon this is pretty good news, although bemoan the fact that a new 21st century logo has been created for the relaunch. The retro Datsun logo would be a welcome relief in a sea of slick corporate design.

To celebrate Datsun’s return we found this great brochure cover of the classic Datto 1200 ute, check out the uncropped version after the break.
