Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT5 competition

Imagine if the getting the keys to the awesome Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’ was as simple as being good at Gran Turismo 5. You don’t have to imagine any longer because Mercedes and Sony have teamed together to turn virtual into reality.

Only trouble is the competition has been run and won. Fifteen contestants from all over the world pre-qualified for the final and were sent to the Red Bull Ring in Austria. There they got time behind the wheel of the SLS AMG and through a series of driving tests a winner was found.

Watch the video and tell us if you think the final event is befitting of the ‘Gullwing’ and a competition based around a driving simulator where the gamer gets to experience some of the best roads and racetracks in the world.

Damnit, I wish I had of known about the competition earlier, I would have given it a red hot go, not sure if i’d be good enough though, but at least I could try 😛

I find it disturbing that after all that, the race to take home a SLS comes down to a simple drag race? Come on! Would have been nice to do a few different race formats to determine the outcome. Maybe a best of 3 laps, and best of 3 drag race.

Maybe somebody thought that because the SLS pinched the looks of the Dodge Viper from almost 20 years ago that it also handles like the Dodge Viper (like it’s on rails, very very straight rails) and designed the final contest accordingly.

I’m not saying the SLS looks crap, just that it’s not original. It should get second place in some kind of design award for best use of tracing paper, every Aston Martin in the last 10 years winning a group award for first place.
