Holden HSV GTS Maloo ute: The best show pony ever?

HSV Gen F GTS

The Holden ute is an Aussie icon, and while its passing will be a sad day, HSV is going to send off the ute by creating the greatest and fastest show pony it has ever made. The exact model name is yet to be confirmed but the working title of HSV GTS Maloo seems to make sense.

We’ve known about this you beaut ute for some time but have been sworn to secrecy. Thanks to news.com.au who have broken the ice we can now share news of the GTS Maloo and perhaps a little bit more.

The GTS Maloo will be limited to 150 units and despite the expected mid-80s price tag it’s likely to become one of the most collectable HSVs of all time. Only 120 of those may be sold in Australia with up to 30 being allocated for New Zealand buyers.

It’s an HSV ute, right, so its closing party trick has to be big power. Big, big power! Essentially the ute will simply knock-off the drivetrain from the GTS sedan, including its 6.2 litre supercharged V8. That means it will bring a mighty 430kW/740Nm to the table. For the old skool readers among you that’s 576hp!

Predictions for the GTS ute’s 0รขโ‚ฌโ€œ100km/h time are in the mid-4 second bracket, but it’s the in-gear acceleration that 740Nm of torque will bring which should bag the biggest smiles this ute has to offer. Oh, aside from the silly sideways stuff that is.

HSV’s Magnetic Ride Control will be fitted standard and will help ensure all that power can get to the ground with some degree of decorum, while massive racing-inspired AP brakes will help to slow things down.

There will be a choice of manual and automatic transmissions and if you want the slushbox you’ll be getting flappy paddles for the first time in an HSV.

We assume Torque Vectoring and Launch Control (manual transmission only) will also carry over from the GTS sedan, although our source has not been able to confirm this.

Cosmetic enhancements for the GTS Maloo will also follow the lead from its four-door counterpart, both inside and out.

We’ve been told that the HSV dealership network has already been notified of their allocations, colour choices and options. So even though there has been no official announcement, if you just want one, we suggest you act now.

In other VF ute related news it’s understood the end of Commodore ute production will be brought forward to 2015, rather than 2016 as previously reported. This is due in part to fact the ute is one of the most expensive products in the Commodore model range to manufacture.

Good luck Alex, many were sold weeks ago, you will find HSV salespeople will have already called their favoured frequent flyer HSV buyers/collectors who will have snapped up this potential classic.

Price wise, no idea, they haven’t announced the car officially yet and as such they haven’t got pricing at dealers yet.

Dealers have been given their allocation, which they are selling now. I rang three dealers who had already sold out, before I managed to leave a deposit and place an order. The pricing I was given was $95000 for manual transmission, the auto is $97500. The salesman said the pricing may change (upwards) as it is still not 100% confirmed.

a few dealers i rang had allocations, one had 3, but all were for autos, and they couldn’t confirm if they could be changed.

MInes a manual! *smug grin* Looks like thats the collectors car. It took me three attempts to find one. A few autos out there but no manuals left.

Do you think Goldstein re Manual? The Auto will be the FIRST car from Holden and HSV in history to get Flappy paddles so should be as collectible IMO (plus I like the idea of remote start that only comes with Autos lol).

Our car is one of only 3 Black/Black Leather with Red inserts out of the lot, a little bit spesh, unfortunately you can’t nominate a build number either, damn, I wanted 05 too, dreamin.

I’m not that familiar with the long-term collectability of HSVs but if there’s only 120 to be sold in Australia I don’t think the transmission will have a huge impact on desirability.

Hey Alpine! Yeah the flappers were an attraction but I’m a bit old fashioned. I like throwing my stick around ๐Ÿ™‚ The manual GTS sedan has launch control wheres the auto does not. I’m guessing it will be the same in the ute. That was the deal breaker for me…

@ Liam, yeh agree, in fact Autos have a broader appeal these days, given the existence of Auto only Licences.

There are some that can’t and won”t drive manuals Goldstein, (not the buyer of the Ute in our family, she prefers manuals) whereas autos are universally driveable, though perhaps less enjoyable and hence my view that the Auto may be a better resale proposition. There is also something that is tre cool about starting the car on a cold Canberra morning from inside the house without going into the garage (obviously using the garage remote first of course ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). Anyway, I am looking forward to going along to pickup the ute with it’s new owner, perhaps even do a Clayton tour to look at some of the build process on the car.

I am not up to speed with resale values of elite or desirable vehicles, however I would suggest the average enthusiast, being a motoring enthusiast, would have the ability to drive a manual car and furthermore possess a manual Licence. Flappy paddle shift is cool, but nothing compares to a manual gearbox, from a driving experience perspective.

Assuming now these are sold out, demand has increased and a few people might let their order slide to someone else for a small fee??? Is anyone still trying to snap one of these up? And what would you pay… Wish I had been on the phone bright an early when they were released to hold a few.

Apparently no confirmed details are released so are we positive the auto’s will have paddle shift?

Good luck and enjoy, for those lucky ones that were quick enough and have too much spare money at their disposal.

Got my money down just in time.
Big question?What colour?
I have a 12 month old R8 Maloo in Prussian Steel, and while different, everyone compliments me on the colour. Problem, no garage, no carport, parked in the street.
Black is out, Red not appreciated on building sites when i arrive(i’m on the tools as well) and owner/builders obviously get bent out of shape.
White/Nitrate(silver) or Perfect Blue?

@ Ellet, dealers ordered their respective cars weeks ago, you get the colour and tranny available, or should I say were available at the time?

@ Alpine, do I assume that Dizzy is in fact Dizzy. Sounds like he has placed his order, but believes he can pick a colour?

What did the dealer tell you Dizzy? Are you options open or you get what they already had allocated.

Seems the dealers know a lot about them, but conveniently know nothing about them.

@Alpine

Has your wife ever bought a car with more than 2 seats?? Enquiring minds can’t recall one..

I was told by the dealer they only come in black white and red

And you have no choice you get what is allocated to you.. I was allocated white ute and the other bloke that got a manual there has a black one

I am lucky to have put a deposit on 1.
I had the choice to pick any colour that are in the Holden brochure. I asked if there were any options and it was only different colour wheels. It has every option. They r supposed to be going into production on the 26th of October

250 cars
No MRC
No Bose
No flappy paddles

Oh well, still get the engine, brakes and g/box and that tq vectoring thingy

By looking at the HSV website, it appears as though buyers will have options to select vehicle colour and transmission? Gone are the impressions of you get what you get? Has anyone confirmed their car yet?
