Here’s your first look at F1 movie ‘Rush’

Trailer for Ron Howard's F1 movie Rush

This is the first official preview of Ron Howard’s F1 movie Rush. One of the hardest things for Howard to achieve will be capturing realistic racing footage. There will be some sequences that won’t look genuine, but if the recreation of Niki Lauda’s crash at the Nürburgring is anything to go by, Howard and his crew have done a fantastic job.

We’re not sure if we’ll see anything new between now and the movie’s release in September, but with the soundtrack appearing recently as well, perhaps a slow trickle of details will further increase the anticipation of Formula 1 fans around the globe.

Bugatti stripped of landspeed record

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Hmm, something’s not quite right here. Just days after Hennessey reckoned that their Venom GT should be acknowledged as the world’s fastest production car Bugatti, who set the record almost three years ago, has had their title rescinded.

In effect, Hennessey accused Bugatti of cheating because the Veyron Super Sport used to set the record had had its 415km/h speed limiter removed, thereby allowing it to reach a verified top speed of 431km/h (267.8mph).

In an official statement the Guinness Book of World Records stated:

“It has come to the attention of Guinness World Records that there was an oversight in its adjudication of the ‘Fastest production car’ which was set in 2010 by the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport,” said Jaime Strang, PR Director of the company.

“As the car’s speed limiter was deactivated, this modification was against the official guidelines. Consequently, the vehicle’s record set at 431.072 km/h is no longer valid. Following this, Guinness World Records is reviewing this category with expert external consultants to ensure our records fairly reflect achievements in this field.”

Bugatti is standing firm, though. “Guinness knew the Veyron’s speed limiter was deactivated but that for safety reasons, cars subsequently sold to customers would have their speed limiters activated [set at 258mph],” a spokeswoman said. “It’s not a hard blow if we lose this title. The Super Sport is more than just a world-record car.”

Lamborghini Miura SV lights my fire

Lamborghini Miura SV

This is just so sad.

We’ve previously called the Lamborghini Miura SV beautiful, and they are. But, sadly, this one no longer is. And if you’re game enough to watch the video after the break you’ll see it gets much worse than the image above.

The fire happened in central London and was filmed and posted to YouTube under the account Save the Rich. Apparently that’s the same folks you may remember from the Ferrari Enzo rally bashing video and more.

We only wish we got to see what they would have filmed with the Miura if it hadn’t expired.

Next-gen Audi RS5 to boast 475hp twin-turbo V6

2013 Audi RS5 Coupe

When the B9-based Audi A5 hits the streets in 2015 it’s expected to lose up to 100kg in weight. There may also be an optional ‘Ultra pack’ offered on selected models for those wanting to save more kilos.

Rather than sacrificing luxury items the Ultra pack could include hollow-spoke alloy wheels, aluminium body panels and lighter engine ancillaries.

The next-generation A5 range is expected to get a light restyling of what is already quite a nice exterior look. It will also benefit from upgrades applied to the A4 range, including an 8-speed S tronic which will likely be available across the A5 line up.

But it’s the news on the range-topping RS5 that interests us the most. Out goes the much loved 331kW (440hp) 4.2 litre naturally aspirated V8, which can trace its roots to the B7 RS4, and in comes a 355kW (475hp) twin-turbo V6 unit.

Let’s hope Audi can nail the handling a bit better this time.

Inside look: Nissan’s clay modelling studio

Nissan's clay model studio

With this video Nissan takes us inside their clay modelling studio in Atsugi, Japan. It’s quite an interesting look at the way clay is still used in the design and development of new cars.

I only wish they spoke a little about what the clay is applied to. I’ve always imagined the models are hewn from a solid block of clay, but know that wouldn’t be the case.

Reviving classic Formula 1 liveries

Restyled F1 livery by Jeremy Hancox

Reviving old skool F1 liveries is becoming something of an art form it would seem. And we’re all the thankful for it.

This time clever clogs designer Jeremy Hancox has come up with four restyled liveries from the 1980s and 90s and applied them to a 21st century F1 car. We thank Jeremy and F1 Fanatic for inviting him to show his wares.

One more thing, car numbers on rear wings: Bring them back!

Here’s the list of cars that have been brought back to the future:

Here’s some music from Ron Howard’s movie Rush, about the 1976 Formula 1 championship battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt. The music was created by noted composer Hans Zimmer.

If you like what you hear you can download the track for yourself via the movie’s official website.

Rush is scheduled for release in September. When we learn more about its Australian release we’ll let you know.

Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series – Australian pricing

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

The 464kW Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series will be launched in Australia in July. And, if you want one, you’ll need to scrounge together the small matter of $639,000.

That’s quite a lot of money really.

But you know the best part? An AUSmotive reader has confirmed with us he has ordered one. Better still, he’s promised us a drive. Assuming all goes as planned; happy days ahead!

New King for Formula 1?

Justin King, Sainbury's CEO

Is this the man that could replace Bernie Ecclestone as the king of Formula 1? He is Justin King and he’s currently the CEO of UK supermarket giant Sainsbury’s.

When asked for a comment on rumours that King could replace him Bernie replied: “I’ve no idea whether the boss of a company like Sainsbury’s could do my job. Maybe he could.”

Bernie playing his cards close to his chest, as always.

Last year the 82-year-old F1 boss, who has no appointed successor, attracted criticism from Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo who aired his opinion that Bernie is now too old for F1.

Bernie is still in a spot of bother over bribery claims concerning the sale of F1 to equity company CVC back in 2006. Of course, Bernie says its all lies and is not all that concerned by the matter.

“There’s nothing to worry about,” he said. “I’m not worried. I’m aggravated with the nonsense I’m being put through for all this. I sold the bloody shares for the bank. It was something they couldn’t sell. They had six people look at it and wouldn’t buy. I got them out of trouble and now I’m in trouble. Life is like that sometimes.”

Back to King for a moment. If he did enter F1 he already has a great narrative to ensure the terms “melodrama” and “F1 supremo” remain linked. King has recently attracted criticism after revelations that five brands linked to Sainsbury’s magically sponsor his son, Jordan, who is currently driving for Carlin Motorsport in the 2013 European Formula 3 championship.

Among the drivers to have tasted F3 title success with Carlin are Jaime Alguersuari (2008), our own Daniel Ricciardo (2009) and Jean-Eric Vergne (2010).

Formula 1 Lexus Toyota

Toyota back in F1 by 2015 using Lexus name?

Jarno Trulli at the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix

Toyota will re-enter Formula 1 in 2015 under the banner of its premium brand Lexus, according to a report on the unofficial Club Lexus website.

The Japanese giant left F1 at the end of the 2009 season amid concerns over the global financial crisis and poor on-track results. However, the introduction of new engine rules in 2014, coupled with a greater reliance on KERS technology, has been enough to lure Toyota back it would seem.

Lexus has proved with its LFA supercar that it can mix it with the best performance cars the planet has to offer. Add to that the numerous hybrid models offered for sale by both Toyota and Lexus you can see why Toyota might want back into F1 using its Lexus badge.

Having Lexus in F1 would also help to counter the increasing profile of competitor Infiniti (née Nissan) following its title partnership deal with Red Bull Racing.

As it stands this story remains a rumour, but Club Lexus states the deal has been discussed at the highest levels of Toyota management and describes entry of Lexus to F1 as “all but finalized”.

Can a tuned Audi S4 match a stock RS4?

Audi S4 v RS4

Whenever you read pissing competitions on automotive internet forums you’ll often hear the phrase, “Yeah, but if I chip my car it will be as fast yours.”

The inference being that someone can buy a cheaper car, a Golf GTI for example, get an off the shelf Stage 1 tune from APR/GIAC/Revo/whoever, and end up with performance on par, or thereabouts, with a Golf R. Of course, such discussions usually end up in a massive tanty and probably a banning or two as well.

Thankfully, then, we have an adult to try the comparison for real. The adult, in this case, is respected motoring hack Chris Harris and the cars in question are the Audi S4 Avant, with a supercharged 3.0 litre V6, and the RS4 Avant, roaring with a naturally aspirated 4.2 litre V8.

Harris has already filed a great review of the B8 RS4 and has, at various times, shared his appreciation for the supposedly lesser S4. Here, then, in a relatively simple comparison Harris shows us how the effects of some aftermarket trickery from Revo can improve the performance of his recently purchased, well used and poorly cared for S4.

True, we don’t get the exact details of all the mods Harris has done to the car, so as a scientific comparison take this with a grain of salt. As usual, though, Harris has made sure the comparison is worthwhile viewing.

Official: BMW Concept X4 revealed

BMW Concept X4

BMW has reacted quickly to this morning’s leak and published official images of its Concept X4 which will debut in Shanghai later this month. So now you can admire the Sports Activity Coupé you secretly love in 2000px goodness.

There’s no real technical detail in the press release, which is no doubt being saved for its show debut. Talking about the Concept X4’s exterior though BMW says it has a “muscular silhouette” and we tend to agree. We like it.
