Fancy a crack in a professional F1 simulator

I-Way F1 simulator

Today the Top Gear website brings us closer to I-Way World. The what? Well, you know how some people build rigs for their gaming console with race seats and the like. Imagine you had no budget and could build what you wanted. Anything at all.

That’s pretty much what they’ve done at I-Way in Lyon, France. There’s WRC simulators for rally action, LMP set-ups if you want to win Le Mans and, of course, a small grid of F1 simulators as well.

It’ll cost you €90 for a 10 minute spin in the F1 rig, that’s three minutes of quali and a seven minute race. Reckon you can handle it? How’s this for an intro:

“The steering wheel is weighted up to 70kg through corners and the brake pedal up to 200kg at racing speed. You will also experience around 2G through corners so you need to be physically fit to control the car.

“And if you have eaten you may want to wait – about four per cent of people vomit. And don’t look at the side screens. They project 300 frames per second for an impression of speed and make some people unwell. This can also make you want to… use the bathroom.”

Follow the link below for more. And if you’re still up for it then check out the I-Way website.

HRT unveils 2012 F1 car

HRT F112

HRT’s new F112 is another latecomer to the 2012 F1 season and like Marussia the Spanish team has only managed promotional runs ahead of this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

Acknowledged as a perennial backmarker it’s the first time HRT has been able to fire their car up prior to the first race. Luis Péres-Sala, Team Principal, said, “I’m very proud of each and every member of this team because everyone has contributed their little bit for this to be possible. Now we have to focus on Australia because we still have a lot ahead.”

HRT will have two new drivers this year, although both with previous F1 experience. Pedro de la Rosa moves back into full-time racing after spending several years as McLaren’s official test driver. He’s joined by Narain Karthikeyan, also back into a regular F1 seat after his debut with Jordan back in 2005 and a limited schedule with HRT last year.

Marussia unveils 2012 F1 car

Marussia MR01

Last week the Marussia F1 team revealed the MR01, their 2012 challenger. After failing an FIA crash test in late February the team has only managed to squeeze in a couple of promotional drives, meaning the car will get its first real test until later this week.

Team Principal John Booth explained, “so while the drivers will be able to get a feel for the car, they won’t be able to draw any real conclusions until we start running in anger in Melbourne.”

Marussia enjoys a partnership with McLaren Applied Technologies and it’s interesting to note the MR01 and McLaren’s MP4-27 are the only cars which don’t feature the controversial platypus style nose.

Timo Glock returns to the driving seat for Marussia this year and he will joined by 22-year-old French rookie Charles Pic.

Renault reminds us they make F1 engines

Renault Megane RS, Formula One livery

Red Bull Racing, Williams, Caterham and Lotus will all be running Renault engines in 2012. And just in case you had forgotten, they have prepped these four Megane RS models to act as a reminder.

As these cars are left hand drive we imagine they’ll be touring around the globe with the F1 circus so fans the world over will get a chance to see them up close.

The promotional cars are designed to help demonstrate to buyers there is a direct link from F1 car to road car. So, are you convinced?

Fresh doubts over Robert Kubica’s F1 future

Robert Kubica

Former Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari has expressed doubts over the F1 future of Robert Kubica. In a recent interview with BBC Radio Alguersuari claimed Kubica is struggling to overcome the injuries suffered in his rally accident at the start of last year.

“At the moment the latest information I have about him is not very good. He cannot drink using his hand—I mean, he cannot take a glass and drink—so it doesn’t look very good. I think his injuries are more than expected,” Alguersuari said.

Meanwhile, an unnamed friend of Kubica’s has provided a more positive update, saying the 27-year-old is showing positive signs.

“He drives his road car and goes out by himself. He is still building up the strength in his right arm,” explained Kubica’s friend. “It will be June or July before it can be determined if he is fit enough to test a F1 car.”

Raikkonen quickest on Day 4 in Barcelona

Kimi Raikkonen, Lotus E20, Barcelona pre-season testing

Kimi Raikkonen showed that with his steering sorted he’s as quick as anyone in F1 today. Actually, his time at pre-season testing in Barcelona overnight is the quickest of any driver on any of the eight days testing at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Further impressing was Raikkonen’s afternoon race simulation which showed the Lotus E20 can minimise the drop off in tyre performance across a long stint as well as any team out there.

Fernando Alonso’s best lap time was two tenths behind Raikkonen, while Bruno Senna made the most of his morning run to lock in the third fastest time of the day before handing over to Pastor Maldonado.

There’ll be some furrowed brows in the Red Bull camp with the update package of the RB8 proving less than spectacular. Webber had dramas yesterday and so did Vettel today, with gearbox problems the root cause. He won’t like being at the bottom of the timesheets.

The usual caveat applies that it can be folly to read too much into pre-season testing form, but you get the sense that Red Bull’s boffins will be earning their pay cheques between now and the Australian Grand Prix which is on in less than two weeks.

Perez quickest on Day 3 in Barcelona

Sergio Perez, Sauber C31, Barcelona pre-season testing

Sergio Perez has recorded the fastest time so far in any of the seven pre-season test days at Barcelona. And with just one day of testing to go before the Australian Grand Prix things are getting tight at the top of the timesheet.

Perez negotiated the Circuit de Catalunya in 1:22.094, just nine one thousandths ahead of Jenson Button. While Australian young gun Daniel Ricciardo was six one hundredths back. Indeed, less than one second covered the first nine drivers.

Lotus, fastest on the previous two days with Romain Grosjean at the wheel, were relegated to slowest in the hands of Kimi Raikkonen. The 2007 world champion complained about the steering in the E20 and the team lost around an hour to rectify the problem.

Light afternoon rain interrupted proceedings in the afternoon with most teams attempting race simulations. A few drivers went out on intermediates, while some chose to remain indoors.

Red Bull ran a new update, including revised exhaust layout and new front wing. However, seeing Webber only eighth fastest is not of any real concern. He did not do any qualifying-style runs and was still within touching distance of Perez.

Although, Webber is cautious about reading pre-season form and expects stiff competition in Melbourne. “Everyone today was in the 1m22s so that is not hanging around at Barcelona these days. So there are a lot of quick teams, a lot of fast cars and we need to continue to work hard,” Webber said in an interview with Autosport.

When asked if he thought the field was closer at the top than it had been in recent years Mark replied, “I think so, the pack is very tight. As I touched on several times that we have run, it is very tight between all the teams and Q2 [in Melbourne] will be interesting.”

Grosjean quickest on Day 2 in Barcelona

Romain Grosjean, Lotus E20, Barcelona

The Lotus E20 has once again shown the F1 field a clean pair of heels with Romain Grosjean improving on yesterday’s effort to post a best time of 1:22.614. Jean-Eric Vergne was next best over half a second behind, with Sebastian Vettel three quarters of a second back.

Unusual for the pre-season testing so far Grosjean’s best lap was recorded late in the day. He was third fastest in the morning session, but he threw on a set of softs for a few late laps to claim top spot on the timesheets.

The day went mostly without drama, save for a minor fire to Vergne’s Toro Rosso at the end of the morning session and a driveline issue with Hulkenberg’s Force India just after the interval. Both drivers were unable to resume.

Kimi Raikkonen will get his chance to show us what he can do in the E20 for the two final days of testing before the Australian Grand Prix.

Grosjean quickest on Day 1 in Barcelona

Romain Grosjean, Lotus E20, Barcelona pre-season testing

Romain Grosjean and Lotus have bounced back from their first pre-season visit to Barcelona by setting the fastest time in testing overnight. Grosjean sent the Lotus E20 around the Circuit de Catalunya in 1:25.252. That’s around one second slower than Kamui Kobayashi’s best lap from the first round of testing in Barcelona.

Jenson Button was a quarter of a second behind Grosjean last night, with Sergio Perez third fastest, almost six tenths back.

All or nothing in 2013 for Mark Webber

F1 Jerez pre-season testing, February 2012

Mark Webber says he will only continue his Formula One career next year if he has a competitive car. He will enter the 2012 F1 season as the only Red Bull-aligned driver without a contract for 2013. Sebastien Vettel, Jean-Eric Vergne and compatriot Daniel Ricciardo are as safe as a driver can be in the cut-throat world of F1.

Speaking about his future in an interview with AAP, Webber said, “I’d need something competitive. It’s pretty clear that I’ve earned my stripes on the way through so I won’t be doing that on the other side—going the other way.

“Being competitive, being at the front, is certainly a big, big factor of me staying very hungry and motivated.”

The accepted wisdom for the 2012 season says Toro Rosso drivers Vergne and Ricciardo are effectively in a season-long job interview for Webber’s coveted Red Bull Racing seat.

Of course, Mark could have a strong year in 2012 and that could pave the way for a simple contract extension with Red Bull. Although, Red Bull showed last year, when they cut both Sebastian Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari from Toro Rosso, that they can be brutal when it comes to their driver roster. A good run of results in 2012 may not be enough for Webber.

For his part Mark says his season-ending win in Brazil has renewed his confidence.
