London calling for new MINI special editions

MINI Bayswater

The MINI Baker Street and MINI Bayswater are the two latest special editions from the niche manufacturer. They will go on sale around the world for a limited time and will arrive in Australia from May.

BMW is the official automotive sponsor for the 2012 Olympic Games and these two London-inspired models have been announced to tie in with that deal. The Baker Street and Bayswater also follow in the path of Camden and Mayfair released in 2009.

For its limited production run the Baker Street is available in Cooper and Cooper D spec and will cost an extra $1950 over regular pricing for those models. Available in Rooftop Grey (as shown below), Pepper White and Midnight Black exterior paintwork, all with black roof, the Baker Street also features unique trim detailing.

The Bayswater can be ordered as a Cooper, Cooper D or Cooper S and features 17″ Sandblast alloys wheels. Pictured here in exclusive Kite Blue metallic paint, it is also available in Midnight Black or Eclipse Grey for the Cooper S Bayswater. As part of its trim detailing there are new bonnet stripes, too, which look quite good. It’ll set you back an extra $3400 for the Cooper and Cooper D, and $2700 in the Cooper S.

Both the Baker Street and Bayswater can be tailored to suit individual desires from the regular and extensive list of MINI options.

There’s more pics and detail from MINI after the break.

Has MINI shelved the Rocketman?

MINI Rocketman Concept

The pint-sized MINI Rocketman, which debuted in concept form at last year’s Geneva Motor Show, will not go into final production, Car reports.

At around 300mm shorter than the current R56 MINI hatch, the Rocketman would need to undergo a stringent program to offer stable handling, stability and crash performance.

It was previously understood to be on target for a launch around 2015, but reports now suggest the Rocketman has been scrapped because it will be too expensive to develop.

We reckon that’s a loss to the micro-car segment. The Rocketman could have offered a fun, stylish and premium product.

MINI finalises pricing for Roadster & Coupé

MINI Roadster

MINI Australia today finalised the list pricing for its Coupé and Roadster ‘twins’ that will be in local showrooms towards the end of next month.

Offered in only Cooper S and John Cooper Works models at launch the 135kW Roadster Cooper S is priced from $45,100, while the 155kW JCW starts at $55,100.

Pricing for the Coupé Cooper S was announced last year and starts at $42,900. And while JCW pricing for the Coupé wasn’t released at the time we can form an educated guess that it will be around $51,900. [The Coupé JCW will start from $52,600, as confirmed today with MINI Australia.]

Basic specifications for the Coupé and Roadster have also been announced. In Cooper S trim you’ll get things the active rear spoiler, xenon headlights, Dynamic Stability Control, Park Distance Control, climate control and Bluetooth for no extra cost.

The extra cash for the JCW spec gets you a 155kW engine, JCW aero body kit, sports suspension, 17″ Challenge alloys and a Harmon Kardon stereo.

WRC teams shake it down before full Monte

MINI WRC

The Monte Carlo Rally, fondly referred to as ‘The Monte’, is resuming its rightful and traditional position as the first WRC event of the year. Yesterday the top WRC teams were out in Valence giving their machines a final shakedown before taking on the full rally.

You can read previews from Citroën, Ford, MINI and Volkswagen at their official websites. Volkswagen? Yes, even though the Polo WRC won’t make its debut until next year the team’s lead driver Sebastien Ogier will be competing in 2012 for stablemates Skoda in the SWRC category.

We anticipate this season with renewed interest thanks to the introduction of MINI as a major player. Although, thanks to what appears to be a fractured relationship between MINI and Prodrive, it’s perhaps not as major as we would all like it to be. We believe the budget issues facing the MINI WRC team are due to BMW redirecting part of the team’s funding towards their return to DTM racing.

Hopefully Prodrive can secure enough sponsorship to put Kris Meeke back in his seat, and with Volkswagen to follow next year, it will be great to see up to four teams competing for outright honours in 2013.

Video of the shakedown in Valence can be seen after the break.

MINI WRC team ready for Monte Carlo Rally

2012 MINI WRC

After something of a false start when they missed the registration deadline for the 2012 WRC season, MINI will be ready to field two cars at this week’s Monte Carlo Rally (17–22 January).

There’s no good news for Kris Meeke, though, who will miss the first two races, at least, to cashed up drivers able to help cover the budget shortfalls faced by the MINI–Prodrive partnership. Frenchman Pierre Campana will be at the wheel for the Monte and Swedish driver Patrik Sandell will take the seat for Rally Sweden (9–12 February).

In other garage news for the MINI WRC team Prodrive Chairman Dave Richards will no longer hold the role of team principal. Dave Wilcox, Prodrive technical director, will takeover the head role.

“It was always my intention to take a step back in the team’s second season and pass the responsibility over to Dave,” said David Richards, chairman of Prodrive. “During the last year he has proved he has all the right skills to lead the team and I have no doubt the MINI WRC Team will continue to go from strength to strength under his leadership.”

Obviously the Monte Carlo Rally is a special event for MINI, following three wins in 1964, 1965 and 1967. It’s just a shame their return hasn’t quiet begun in the most ideal circumstances. Dani Sordo showed some great promise in the limited program run by MINI last year; who knows, perhaps a fairytale win could be on the cards.

Peterhansel wins 2012 Dakar with MINI

Stephane Peterhansel, X-raid MINI All4, 2012 Dakar

It’s now official, Stephane Peterhansel has won the 2012 Dakar rally for the X-raid team driving a MINI All4. He enjoyed a comfortable 42 minute margin over his X-raid temmate Nani Roma. It’s the tenth win for the 46-year-old Frenchman who won his first Dakar way back in 1991 in the motorcycle class on a Yamaha YZE750T.

He won five more Dakars with Yamaha over the next seven years. The first of what is now four wins in the car class was in 2004 at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Pajero. He enjoyed two more wins with Mitsubishi in 2005 and 2007.

Despite Peterhansel’s impressive run of success the victory was the first for the X-raid team and the first for MINI.

Speaking after the event Peteransel said, “When you think of how hard it is to win a Dakar, it’s incredible that I’ve been able to win ten of them. It’s been a long time, I’ve been waiting for five years to win again.

“To take the victory in South America is a huge relief, it ranks among my best triumphs. Winning the rally for Team X-raid makes it even more special, since Sven Quandt has been waiting for years for this to happen. I don’t know what I could do to go one better. Beating this record is going to be difficult … for the others!”

MINI on verge of dominant Dakar victory

MINI All4 Countryman, 2012 Dakar

The MINI All4 X-raid team is set to cap off a dominant two weeks in South America by handing Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel his tenth Dakar victory (three wins in cars, six on bikes).

The start of the final stage, with only 29 timed kilometres, is not too far away and Peterhansel currently enjoys a lead of almost 43 minutes over his X-raid teammate Nani Roma.

While the MINI All4 has been a familiar face at the top of the leaderboard throughout the event, Peterhansel has been under strong pressure from American Robby Gordon in his Hummer. Sadly for Gordon he had a horrible day yesterday which ended his remote chances of success and saw him lose two hours to Peterhansel.

The second last day managed to catch out a lot of competitors as well and Peterhansel can thank a 20 minute lead going into the day which allowed him to take a slightly conservative approach.

“It was not a stage we were trying to win. We wanted to avoid falling into traps, especially after getting stuck in the sand yesterday,” Peterhansel said after finishing the day unscathed. “It was the toughest stage of the entire Dakar with regard to the dunes. We made a tactical choice to start with lower-than-normal tyre pressure, so we had to be very careful at certain points, but we did well on the dunes.”

There’s a brief video recap from Dakar YouTube channel after the break and we’ll be back with more from MINI assuming victory is the formality it should be.

MINI’s WRC woes continue as Meeke is dropped

MINI WRC

MINI WRC driver pairing of Kris Meeke (pictured left) and his co-driver Paul Nagle have been dropped, Autocar reports. At this stage the shock decision has not been officially confirmed and Prodrive chairman Dave Richards has been unavailable for comment.

It’s understood MINI and Prodrive have struggled to find enough sponsorship to keep Meeke/Nagle in their roles for 2012. The Irish duo still have two years remaining on their contract. The status of lead driver Dani Sordo (pictured right) remains unaffected and he will drive in all 12 races next year.

Apparently MINI will auction off their second car to the highest bidder on an event-by-event basis. It is hoped Meeke and Nagle will remain with the team behind the scenes and could return to competition if enough funding can be raised.

It’s the second blow for MINI and Prodrive following the news before Christmas that the team had missed the deadline to lodge their official entry for the 2012 season. Perhaps we now have a reason why.

MINI misses major milestone

MINI WRC

MINI has missed the deadline for official entry into the 2012 WRC series, Autosport reports.

It’s not immediately clear who is to blame for the oversight, but it seems to be the Munich side of the BMW–Prodrive relationship. As you would expect both parties are now desperately trying to come to a new agreement with the FIA to remedy the situation.

A BMW source commenting on the slip-up has said, “We have made two podiums already in the development year, we can’t fail but to be very happy with what we are achieving. There are a few things to talk about and time has beaten us on the deadline, but the cars will be in Monte Carlo—we couldn’t miss the MINI’s return to that rally.”

There is speculation that the BMW–Prodrive relationship is under some stress, this mistake won’t help things greatly. From the FIA’s point of view they would be foolish to cause MINI any long-term pain over this, hopefully, minor drama.

In other news, both Ford and Citroën managed to keep their paperwork in order and are officially confirmed for the WRC in 2012.

VIDEO: MINI WRC Team 2011 highlights

MINI WRC Team

MINI and Prodrive returned to the world rally stage with their Countryman WRC this year. In a staged re-introduction to the sport they took part in only six of the 13 events. Dani Sordo still managed to make quite an impact, with a third place finish in Germany and coming within 6.3 seconds of a win in France.

The MINI WRC Team has condensed its debut season into a sub-three minute highlights package, which can be seen after the break. Also included is Kris Meeke giving a brief tour of the MINI WRC cockpit.

MINI JCW Countryman officially in the works

MINI JCW Countryman

It’s official, MINI will make a JCW Countryman. The image above shows a prototype undergoing winter testing in Austria.

The word is the JCW Countryman will offer a more tailored suspension tune, including a 10mm drop in ride height and an increase in power beyond the usual 210hp (155kW) we’ve come to expect from the JCW 1.6 litre turbo.

Sadly, it appears that Prodrive will have nowt to do with the development of this car. So, we can only hang in hope that a road going Countryman WRC is a possibility.

Joining the 135kW Cooper S will be the 155kW John Cooper Works model (pictured). Pricing for the JCW is a closely guarded secret for now and we’ll bring you more closer to its launch, also in February 2012.
