Horner urges Webber to give bikes the cold shoulder

Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing

You’ve all probably heard the news that Mark Webber drove the last four races of the 2010 F1 season with a busted shoulder following yet another mountain bike accident. Now, his boss, Christian Horner says he should keep away from bikes altogether.

Webber sustained a broken leg and fractured shoulder in late 2008 after he collided with a car while competing in the Mark Webber Challenge in Tasmania. While Mark competed stoically during 2009, notching up two race wins, it took him at least half the season to regain full fitness.

Fast forward to October this year—just before the Japanese Grand Prix—and Webber made a quick trip home to Australia for some R&R to get refreshed for the last few races of the year. At least, that was the plan. For the first time since his 2008 accident, Mark climbed aboard a mountain bike. And crashed again. Another injured shoulder was the result. Webber kept the injury pretty much to himself and took a series of pain killing injections to see out the season.

News of Webber’s injury only emerged following the release of a new book from the Australian titled Up Front – 2010, A Season To Remember. Christian Horner has spoken to the UK’s Telegraph and expressed his ire at being kept in the dark, “I didn’t even know about the book, let alone the shoulder.

“It is obviously disappointing that Mark said nothing. It was an injury that did not appear to have any effect on his performance but all the same it would have been nice to know about it.”

Horner was asked if Red Bull Racing would insist Mark sticks to racing cars in 2011 and replied, “Our drivers have an obligation to make sure they are fit. It seems bikes don’t agree with Mark so maybe it would be better if he stayed away from them.”

Perhaps it’s good that Mark kept quiet about the injury; it would have only strengthened the mental belief of his closest competitors after all. However, you can’t help but think the ultimate result in the 2010 championship race could have been different if Mark was 100% fit.

Chris Alajajian wins the 2010 MINI Challenge

Chris Alajajian

Congratulations to Chris Alajajian who was crowned 2010 MINI Challenge champion at the series finale in Sydney on the weekend. Alajajian led the standings going into the round, but had to fend off 2009 defending champ Paul Stokell, who was within reach of claiming back-t0-back titles.

In the end victory in Race 1 for Alajajian meant a solid fifth place in Race 2 was enough to seal the deal. Speaking after the event Alajajian said, “Consistency this year was key and we didn’t put a foot wrong all year apart from at the Gold Coast, and this was a major factor in our success. The points system this year made racing really close and I think we have showcased the best season out of the three years this series has been run.”

Following BMW Australia’s recent announcement to end the series Alajajian will be the final MINI Challenge title holder and, along with Stokell, he joins 2008 winner Neil McFadyen on the Australian honour roll.

There’s more after the break and TV highlights will be added when available.

Ken Block Gymkhana Grid invitational

Ken Block v Tanner Foust

On the weekend Ken Block and his mates were living it up at the Gymkhana Grid invitational. The event even carried the name of the internet’s Sultan of Sideways. Promising to be a donut, rubber-burning fuelled festival of spin where “your mind will be blown the f@#! away” it looks like the lads had fun.

After the break you can see the promo clip advertising the event, followed by footage of the final race showing Ken Block and Tanner Foust ripping it up in a pair of Ford Fiestas.

CAMS and AGPC kiss and make up

2010 Australian Grand Prix

The 2011 Australian Grand Prix will go ahead as planned after CAMS announced they have called a truce on their bickering with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC). A letter from CAMS CEO, David Morgan, has been distributed to affiliates which reads in part, “I am very pleased to advise CAMS members that our President Andrew Papadopoulos announced today that we have signed an agreement with AGPC for CAMS to be the sporting Organiser as defined in the Formula One Sporting Regulations.”

Tensions were raised when the AGPC threatened to de-register the role of CAMS as GP organisers if they did not lower the fee charged for running the event.

Now, though, both parties should be singing from the same hymn sheet with Morgan’s letter continuing, “CAMS is delighted to have reached this agreement and looks forward to continuing its role in one of the world’s best Formula 1 events and helping to make it an even greater success.” The full letter from David Morgan can be read after the jump.

In other Australian Grand Prix news, Qantas has renewed its sponsorship for the 2011 race. Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said, “Qantas has been associated with the Australian Grand Prix for 25 years and we are especially looking forward to next year’s event with Qantas as the Premier Partner.”

Next year’s Australian Grand Prix will run across the weekend of 24–27 March and will follow Bahrain as the second race on the 2011 F1 calendar.

FIA confirms F1 team lists for 2011

2010 Brazilian Grand Prix

The FIA has released a confirmed list of teams and drivers for the 2011 season. Following the news from overnight, we can now add Pastor Maldonado to the vacant Williams seat, which leaves nine drives still up for grabs.

Interestingly, Toro Rosso is shown as having no drivers confirmed, despite team boss Franz Tost already on record as saying Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi will return next year.

Faster Pastor

Pastor Maldonado

Williams F1 has just confirmed 25-year-old Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado will drive for them in 2011. Maldonado will take the seat vacated by Nico Hulkenberg and joins veteran Rubens Barichello.

Maldonado first caught the attention of Sir Frank Williams in 2007 when the driver won at Monaco in his debut GP2 season. Earlier this year a run of six vitories on end helped Maldonado pocket the GP2 championship.

He drove for Williams on all four test days at the recent young driver testing held immediately after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Sir Frank is happy to have him on board, “We are very much looking forward to developing his talent over the winter and a fruitful season with him next year.”

It’s closing in on three decades since a Venezuelan has driven in F1, the last man to do so was Johnny Cecotto, who would be familiar to touring car fans thanks to his time driving for BMW. Maldonado is looking forward to seeing his country represented in Formula One again, “I will be doing my best over the winter to prepare myself, and I know the team will be working hard to ensure a successful season. 2011 will be the first time in nearly thirty years that a Venezuelan has driven a Formula One car so I will be looking to get some good results in return for the support my country has given me to help get me to this position today.”

You can learn more about Pastor Maldonado in the Q&A interview included with the official Williams press release after the break.

Audi announces race-ready TT GT4

Audi TT GT4

Just weeks after announcing the racing TT RS, Audi will extend its customer motorsport program further with the TT GT4 developed by quattro GmbH. Due for sale in 2012 the TT GT4 was launched at the DTM round in Shanghai on the weekend. Powered by a 250kW TFSI engine, the car will be priced from around €120,000 (AU$165,000) and is designed to be an affordable entry into motor racing.

The front and rear aprons originate from the road-going TT RS, so too the rear wing. However the addition of a race safe fuel cell and roll cage show this little beastie is a track-only proposition. Plastic windows are also a bit of a giveaway and many of the body panels are made from lightweight CFRP.

More piccies after the break.

Crunch time for Kovalainen

Heikki Kovalainen

Lotus F1 driver Heikki Kovalainen was representing Team Finland in the Race of Champions last weekend. Things didn’t quite go to plan when he was racing rally ace Sebastien Loeb at the wheel of an Audi R8 LMS. Apparently a suspension failure and a jammed throttle caused him to lose control and smash through the barriers.

Fortunately, the incident happened moments after the drivers crossed the finish line otherwise Loeb may have found his way into the muddle as well.

According to Kovalainen’s twitter feed he was unconscious for 30 seconds, but didn’t suffer any major injuries. Footage of Heikki’s stack can be seen below.

Roll with the crunches

Michele Mouton rolls Audi S1

This weekend saw the annual running of the Race of Champions in Düsseldorf, Germany. As part of the exhibition event former rally star Michèle Mouton took to the track in an Audi Quattro S1. As you can see things didn’t quite go to plan for the only woman to win a round of the WRC.

Fortunately the crash was low-speed and low-impact meaning Mouton escaped unharmed and damage to the car was limited. Speaking after the incident Mouton, who helped organise the first ROC event back in 1988, was apologetic for the delays caused to the racing action.

For the record the home town team of Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher won the main prize ahead of Team Great Britain, represented by Jason Plato and Andy Priaulx.

2010 MINI Challenge – Round 6, Gold Coast

2010 MINI Challenge - Round 6, Gold Coast

With one round to go, defending series champ Paul Stokell picked a good time to bag his first Round win at the Gold Coast last month. That puts him very much within striking distance of Chris Alajajian, who has led the 2010 MINI Challenge all year. Alajajian did manage to win Race 1 on the Gold Coast, but suffered car issues thereafter.

Stokell finished all three races on the podium, but it was his Race 2 win that will go down in the history books. His winning margin was a mere 0.014 seconds, thanks to a last corner lunge to snatch the race from rising star Sean Carter. You can see highlights of that race after the break.

Glenn Seton returned for another drive in the UberStar Car and became the first driver to secure a race win in car #50 by taking out Race 3.

So, the final MINI Challenge race to be held in Australia for the foreseeable future will take place in Sydney next weekend. Let’s hope it’s a great spectacle with some good clean racing.

Ricciardo has Friday on his mind

Daniel Ricciardo & Sebastien Bueml

Young Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo (left) will take another step towards an F1 career with Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2011. The 21-year-old will drive in the Friday practice sessions at all 20 races next year.

Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi (right) have already been confirmed as Toro Rosso’s drivers for next season and they will miss alternating Friday sessions in 2011 to make way for Ricciardo’s role.

Ricciardo will also continue to race in the Formula Renault 3.5 series, but says F1 is his long-term goal, “I am really excited at the prospect of driving for Scuderia Toro Rosso in the practice sessions next year, so I have to say thanks to Red Bull for this great opportunity.

“My main priority for 2011 is to win the Formula Renault 3.5 championship, but my ultimate aim is to be a full-time Formula One driver and this new role has to be the best step towards achieving that ambition.”

The news follows this week’s earlier rumour suggesting Buemi could make way for Ricciardo in a full-time capacity. While that doesn’t look like happening just yet, Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost has left the door open for the young West Australian, “When our team was created, its stated aim was to bring on young drivers from the Red Bull Junior Team, so Daniel’s appointment as our third driver is an obvious one.

“Although Daniel has done some F1 testing already, running on Fridays at the grands prix will give him a valuable insight into the additional pressures of doing it for real during a race weekend. I am also sure that having a hungry youngster on the books will keep our current driver pairing nice and sharp!”
