Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG hits the skids

Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG

There’s nothing too sophisticated about this clip. Okay, it is very well produced and the influence of Top Gear is evident, but essentially it is a big German saloon with way too much power sliding around on a wet track. Sounds like fun, don’t you think. Especially when that big saloon is the Benz E 63 AMG.

Sure, 386kW might be overdoing things a little, especially in this context. But, as the saying goes, I never met a horsepower I didn’t like. Take the jump, enjoy the clip and don’t do any skids on the way home.

F1 Safety Car gives you wings

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, F1 Safety Car

Mercedes-Benz are pretty chuffed with their new F1 Safety Car. So much so they’ve written a long press release and released a bunch of new pics. The car, of course, is the SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’. And this is the fifteenth year that Mercedes has headed the field with Safety Car duties, the only company to hold that honour.

The Gullwing is a sleek looking machine with 420kW and 650Nm on offer. That means when Bernd Mäylander is wringing the neck off this thing he will still look like he is just plodding around on a Sunday afternoon drive when he has a tantrum of Formula One cars behind him. In reality he will be travelling every bit as fast as the car and chassis will allow. And with a claimed 0-100 time of 3.8 seconds it won’t exactly be hanging about.

The best news, though, in F1-trim, the Gullwing has two telly screens inside so you can watch the race while at work. How good is that!

High resolution Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black images

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

Staggering. That’s probably the best way to describe the performance figures of the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series. Peak power from the 6.0 V12 is 493kW (670hp) and torque is electronically limited to 1000Nm. Helped along by a couple of turbos the SL65 Black is good for a sub four second sprint to 100km/h and further electronic limiting reigns in the top speed to a lazy 320km/h (200mph).

See below for the press release and more images of this coupé that is certainly no shrinking violet. The styling is wild, slightly over the top, but it still looks great. Click on each picture for a 2000px super image.

Top Gear – Series 11, Episode 2

Episode 2 of Top Gear’s Series 11 aired in the UK last night and the show closed with this great clip of Jeremy Clarkson behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK Black Edition. The episode began with a comparison between the new Subaru Impreza STi and the latest Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. Richard Hammond took the twin turbo V10 572bhp Audi RS6 to the French alps. A couple of dudes from Spooks were pitted against each other in the Chevy Lacetti. And the Top Gear Stuntman tried to recreate a James Bond movie stunt.

All standard Top Gear fare, but this in no way demeans the lads’ efforts. As Jeremy said in closing his AMG film, this episode embodies the show’s raison d’etre, presenting “the absolute joy of driving a great car, on a great road”. See you next week!

Australian pricing for new Benz CLS range

Mercedes Benz CLS

Mecedes-Benz Australia have today released pricing and specification details on their all new CLS class saloon range. The CLS still looks like a competently designed AU Falcon, something Ford couldn’t manage, with the attractive swooping hipline giving the big Benz it’s most distinguishing feature. As to be expected Mercedes have upped the ante on the electronic gadget front. LED lighting is used for rear tail lights and indicators, as well as in the often copied side mirror indicator repeaters. A revised steering wheel has also been introduced, but no word on whether it can be fitted with a diamond encrusted Benz roundel from factory. Other electronic specifications are best left to the press release, which reads:
