You can’t buy a New Stratos, but you can buy the book

New Stratos

It’s been over three years since German entrepreneur Michael Stoschek captured the imagination of the motoring world by commissioning a 21st century interpretation of the legendary Lancia Stratos.

Styled by Pininfarina and wrapped around the shell of a Ferrari F430, we were teased with the prospect of the New Stratos being built in strictly limited numbers. And then, Ferrari crushed all hope.

Now all we are left with is a series of photographs and the opportunity to buy a specially created book and DVD. Still, at €25 for the pleasure we’re guessing many more people can own this piece of motoring history than could have afforded an actual New Stratos!

Ferrari F430 lights my fire

Ferrari F430 fire, Boca Raton, FL

Can you believe it’s almost been a year since we featured a flaming Ferrari. This F430, which caught ablaze in Boca Raton in Florida, has certainly been worth the wait. This one went really tits up!

Adding to the humour, if there is any, is the fact this throbbing red thoroughbred was parked outside a Hooters restaurant. According to eyewitness reports nobody was in the car or injured during the blaze and the car was sitting idle for about 15 miniutes before things started to get too hot under the collar.

Nearby firefights slid down their pole and came to the rescue, extinguishing the flames with a minimum of fuss. We wonder where they went for celebration drinks?

P4/5 Competizione to be diesel powered?

P4/5 Competizione

On the weekend the P4/5 Competizione had its second and final race at the Nürburgring before the 24 hour race in June. James Glickenhaus and his team will continue testing, most likely at the Hungaroring, to finalise their N24 preparations.

Mike Frison, respected Nürburgring blogger, and lately Save the Ring activist, caught up with Glickenhaus at the race and had a good chat. Two of the more notable points to emerge from that discussion were plans to race the P4/5 Competizione at Le Mans and Sebring in future.

Makes sense, really, you put all that money into making a racecar, you probably want to tale it around the world.

However, it was the revelation that Glickenhaus would also like to convert the P4/5 Competizione to run a diesel engine to help improve performance. That’s likely to cause a few disturbances of the force down Ferrari-way.

New Stratos – The performance

New Lancia Stratos

The performance figures of the New Stratos have just been published on the official website and join last week’s technical specs. So just how fast is a custom-built supercar that weighs less than 1250kg with 375kW on tap?

  • 0–100km/h: 3.3 seconds
  • 0–200km/h: 9.7 seconds
  • Top speed: 274km/h

Aside from quoting a power-to-weight ratio of less than 2.3kg/hp not much else is given away.

More footage of the Lancia Stratos prototype

Lancia Stratos prototype

It’s been around a month since we’ve seen anything new on the Lancia Stratos revival. Here are a couple of new clips showing the car being put through its paces at the Balocco test track in Italy and at the Pininfarina wind tunnel.

The man at the wheel during the Balocco testing was former F1 driver Tiago Monteiro. So, this Michael Stoschek guy, isn’t mucking about. This is shaping up to be one serious bit of kit.

We could see the final production ready version launched next month at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, too. But don’t get too excited, there’s likely to be just 25 of these Ferrari F430 powered rockets.

New Lancia Stratos filmed during track development

New Lancia Stratos

Michael Stoschek is a lucky man. Not only does he have the cash to convince Pininfarina to design and develop a new 21st century Lancia Stratos, he has also had some time behind the wheel, as this video shows. The footage was filmed at Balocco, Italy and it is understood a Porsche 911 GT3 was on hand used as benchmark testing.

It’s still unclear if Stoschek will be keeping all the fun for himself, or if he will commission a run of 25 cars to share with the world. Perhaps the video you can see after the break gives us a clue on that front. However, the only language spoken during the footage is German. So, if you are able to translate any of the words, especially the ones that aren’t new, Stratos, Ferrari, Pininfarina and Turin please do so.

Oh, do they explain how they have managed to make that F430 engine sound like a truck?

Ferrari celebrates with sweet 16M

Ferrari Scuderia F430 16M

Lewis Hamilton may have snatched the Formula 1 World Drivers Championship, but Ferrari took home the constructors’ gong. To celebrate their F1 World Constructor’s Championship, Ferrari’s sixteenth overall, they have released the Scuderia Spider F430 16M. The 16M was revealed at the World Finals in Mugello and will be limited to 499 examples, all marked with special badging and build plates.

Showing that the 16M has as much horse as it does prancing, the limited edition Spider is the fastest open top ever around Ferrari’s Fiorano test track.

The 16M tips the scales 80kg lighter than the regular F430 Spider and the lazy 510hp (380kW) V8 propels the car to a top speed of 315km/h while taking a mere 3.7 seconds to go past 100km/h.

Top Gear – Series 11, Episode 2

Episode 2 of Top Gear’s Series 11 aired in the UK last night and the show closed with this great clip of Jeremy Clarkson behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK Black Edition. The episode began with a comparison between the new Subaru Impreza STi and the latest Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. Richard Hammond took the twin turbo V10 572bhp Audi RS6 to the French alps. A couple of dudes from Spooks were pitted against each other in the Chevy Lacetti. And the Top Gear Stuntman tried to recreate a James Bond movie stunt.

All standard Top Gear fare, but this in no way demeans the lads’ efforts. As Jeremy said in closing his AMG film, this episode embodies the show’s raison d’etre, presenting “the absolute joy of driving a great car, on a great road”. See you next week!

Top Gear – Series 11, Episode 1

Joy to the world—Top Gear is back! With talk of new Australian and US versions in production, I guess there is now a need to specify just which Top Gear is being referred to. Of course, it is the original UK line up of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. The lads are presenting Series 11 and the first episode aired in the UK last Sunday. Above is the first part of two clips of their £1000 Police car challenge, the second part is down below.

Other highlights from the show included Jeremy’s review of the new-ish Ferrari F430 Scuderia, a Toyota Prius v BMW M3 fuel challenge and an all out supercar economy challenge. A new crew member—Top Gear Stunt man—was also introduced. It looks like we are in for another great series from the entire Top Gear team. Stay tuned for more next week.
