McLaren MP4-12C laps Nürburgring in 7:28

McLaren MP4-12C

One of the world’s newest supercars, the McLaren MP4-12C, has unofficially lapped the Nürburgring in 7 minutes 28 seconds. The time was recorded by respected German magazine Sport Auto.

Perhaps McLaren would secretly wish for a faster time, as the mighty Mac is around 16 seconds slower than the Dodge Viper ACR, 12 seconds slower than the Lexus LFA and 10 seconds slower than a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. At least it’s four seconds faster than a Ferrari 458 Italia.

UPDATE: Official video from McLaren Automotive has been added below, which confirms the Sport Auto lap time and includes a few words from their noted test driver Horst von Saurma.

McLaren not amused with MP4-12C eBay listing

2011 McLaren MP4-12C

A person named ‘Frank’ has upset the bosses at McLaren after he listed his MP4-12C on eBay the same day he took delivery, Autocar reports. Indeed, it may well have been the very first 12C to be delivered.

The car in question had a £250,000 reserve, some £65,000 over the official asking price. McLaren has an arrangement with its 12C customers that they do not on sell their new wheels for profit. Within eight seconds, it is believed, McLaren saw the listing and quickly started asking questions.

After some stuffing around and, no doubt, a few heated phone calls the Rybrook dealership in Birmingham effectively refunded ‘Frank’ and took the car back.

Merdad messes with McLaren MP4-12C

Merdad MehRon GT

The Merdad Collection is better known for playing around with high-powered Porsche models and making them even more high-powered. Now, though, they’ve messed around with the newest supercar kid on the block; the McLaren MP4-12C.

The wilder Mac will be called the MehRon GT. We wonder if that’s just code for the reaction likely to be given by Ron Dennis. Merdad say there will be a GT3 version coming as well.

At the moment there’s no performance details, suffice to say we expect the Merdad Mac will go from damn fast to damn faster.

The bodykit won’t be to everyone’s liking, but as we’ve seen earlier today, it could be a lot worse. From some angles, the Merdad look has the aggression and purpose lacking from the donor car.

There’s more photos after the break and, as is usually the case, you can click on the pics to view as 2000px super images.

McLaren MP4-12C – Australian pricing

McLaren MP4-12C

We received an anonymous tip last night telling us the driveaway pricing in Australia for the new McLaren MP4-12C will be $526,800. Naturally, that price will blow out if you start ticking options boxes, and if you can, why wouldn’t you.

Local deliveries are expected to take place later this year. We’ve previously reported that the 12C allocation for this year has sold out, so perhaps you can have until 2012 to get your finance sorted.

Despite some recent criticism suggesting the car is lacking soul and subsequent attempts from the Woking posse to remedy the situation we still think we’d rather like a 12C sitting in our drive should the chance present itself.

Now, if only we could get our hands on a lazy half million bucks to make it happen.

McLaren MP4-12C v Ferrari 458 v Noble M600

Before Evo magazine discovered what they thought needed improving in the McLaren MP4-12C first they had to test it against its competitors. The most obvious rival is the Ferrari 458 Italia. For extra laughs Evo added the Noble M600 as well.

Roger Green took on the track testing duties at the Bedford Autodrome West Circuit. Above you’ll see what he thought of the 12C. After the break you’ll see his views on the Fez and the Noble. Also included is a drag race with all three cars, plus a Porsche 911 Turbo S.

McLaren responds to MP4-12C criticism

McLaren MP4-12C

When McLaren was hyping up the MP4-12C supercar prior to its launch they were telling us it was going to the best car ever, pretty much. Once the finished article found its way into the hands of the world’s leading motoring reviewers things began to stray from McLaren’s script.

Group tests by Car magazine, among others, found the Ferrari 458 Italia was going to prove to be the 12C’s nemesis. That was certainly the view of Fifth Gear duo Jason Plato and Tiff Needell. Although, Jeremy Clarkson disagreed, prompting Plato to share his indifference with the world.

When the hallowed halls of Evo got their hands on the new McLaren supercar they too were left disappointed. In fact, senior writer Harry Metcalfe sent off a wish list of improvements to McLaren Automotive MD Anthony Sheriff.

To his surprise, just eight days later, Sheriff invited Metcalfe to the company’s Surrey headquarters to drive the revised car. After McLaren revised the gear change, steering and induction note Metcalfe declared, “It’s vastly better.”

Sheriff replied with glee, “In F1 there’s no time to mull things over. You look at a situation, you make a decision and you get the solution on the car for the next race. In the car division we reflected the comments made, looked at alternative solutions and had them on the car within a day or two and now they’ll be going into production.

“At McLaren we have the mentality to react very quickly,” he said.

Jay Leno gets McLaren MP4-12C driving lesson

Jay Leno has moved on from Volkswagen and over to England to tell us about taking delivery of his new McLaren MP4-12C. As well as hearing Leno’s life advice for Charlie Sheen we learn that chambray shirts and an endless budget don’t add up to a lot of talent when things get serious on the track.

“Clarkson wouldn’t know a great handling car if it hit him in the face”

Jason Plato, reigning BTCC champ, Fifth Gear luminary and known for his willing opinions on the internet, has taken aim at Jeremy Clarkson after the latter reviewed the McLaren MP4-12C on Top Gear last weekend.

In fact, after watching Clarkson compare the MP4-12C to the Ferrari 458 Italia, Plato felt compelled to tweet the following to his 22,000+ followers: “Tonight’s top gear, prove that JC may be a great wordsmith, however he wouldn’t know a great handling car if it hit him in the face, journos!”

Them there are fighting words, and if you can be arsed you can follow some of the dialogue fired Plato’s way.

Here at AUSmotive, though, we’re not too fussed with the nail files at dusk. We just like the opportunity of seeing two great cars being thrashed around a track. Twice. Which you can do too by watching the Fifth Gear review above and the Top Gear review below.

Let us know which you think is best—McLaren or Ferrari, Fifth Gear or Top Gear—in the comments section after the break.

“Get ready for a shock!”

That’s the promise made by Car magazine as they bring word of a new supercar test to see just how good the new McLaren MP4-12C really is. The list of cars cars pitted against the fast Mac is impressive:

Ben Collins is the man at the wheel on the track. For an added bonus teaser you can see in-car footage from the SLS AMG Gullwing after the break, showing a hot lap around the Rockingham Speedway circuit. The full supertest video is due to be posted on 20 June.

McLaren MP4-12C goes off chasing Ring record

McLaren MP4-12C

Word on the street, via Bridge to Gantry, says the McLaren MP4-12C had a bit of an off at the end of an industry pool testing day last week. Apparently the 12C went out at the end of the session, with the track to itself and a TV crew in chopper chasing overhead, indicating a possible lap record attempt.

The feisty Mac had almost completed its lap when it went past the tourist entry gates at full noise on the Döttinger Höhe straight. Moments later, however, tyre screeches were heard and some nasty impact sounds were also reported.

Soon after, a covered recovery truck was seen on track, presumably to collect the wreckage. Unsurprisingly McLaren has yet to confirm the incident and it’s not clear how badly damaged the car was, or if the driver sustained any injuries, but we hope all is okay and the Mac is back on track soon.

McLaren MP4-12C GT3 pricing announced

McLaren MP4-12C GT3

A few days ago McLaren GT had its official launch press conference. It’s the separate company set up by McLaren and CRS Racing Team for the development and running of the MP4-12C GT3 program.

They’ll be racing their own cars, of course, but if you’ve got nothing better to do with your Sunday afternoons in 2012 you too can race a 12C GT3. All you’ll need is £310,000 for the “race ready” car and a racing budget. Too easy!

For the 2012 season McLaren GT will have 20 cars ready to race, so if you get saving now you just might be in luck.

After the break you can see a nice selection of images of the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 in its stunning orange livery, along with some highlights from the press conference and more.
