A little piece of you may die watching this video

Porsche 991 911 GT3 with PDK spied

Apparently the video below features the 991-based 911 GT3. It’s only short and you don’t see many moving pictures. But it’s what your ears tell you that is most alarming. And that’s the sound of a PDK transmission.

PDK stands for Porsche Doppelkupplung and it may as well be a bunch of swear words. No doubt Porsche does all it can to ensure its twin-clutch gearbox is one of the best money can buy, but a GT3 just has to have a manual box.

We know the onslaught of twin-clutch transmissions is inevitable, but for us this is at least as big as when Porsche switched the 911 from air cooling to water.

More Golf VII details leaked in two videos

Volkswagen Golf VII

Last week Autocar brought us some official numbers for the next-generation Volkswagen Golf. Turns out they were probably presented in the (edited) video we see here.

As you can see the dimensions of the Mk7 compared to the Mk6 Golf are quite similar and so too is the car’s side profile. Volkswagen has kept the interior quite similar also, with only minor modifications to the basic layout. You can see more on the interior in this video featuring sketched illustrations.

However, the list of safety features and infotainment systems will be in for a big upgrade. For the first time on a Golf we’ll be seeing the following features (among others):

  • Multicollision brake
  • Touch screen with proximity sensoring
  • LED fog lights
  • PreCrash
  • City Emergency Braking
  • Fatigue detection
  • Traffic sign detection
  • Park Pilot
  • Dynamic Light Assist
  • Lane Assist
  • Front Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Electric parking brake
  • Driving profile selection
  • Cylinder deactivation
  • Run-flat tyres

Some of those features are self-explanatory, for others we may need to wait for the official reveal next week. We’re a little surprised to see run-flat tyres on the list, but at least Volkswagen can rely on the preparatory data gained from almost 10 years of run-flat technology used by BMW.

Audi Ford Kia Renault Safety Issues Volvo

Audi A3, Renault Clio & Volvo V40 among latest five star pupils

Audi A3

In the most recent test results published by Euro NCAP the newest Audi A3, Renault Clio and Volvo V40 models were all awarded the maximim possible five star safety rating.

The A3 scored 95% for adult occupants and was praised for its strong performance in the side barrier test. However, Euro NCAP state the A3’s bonnet design resulted in marginal to poor protection for pedestrians.

Renault’s fourth generation Clio rated best in the safety assist criterion with 99%, but registered only marginal protection against whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision.

A perfect score was recorded by the Volvo V40 for its safety assist systems. With a score of 88% for pedestrian safety the V40 was praised for its under-bonnet airbag.

Pictures and links to the full reports and videos can be found after the break.

2013 Mazda6 revealed

2013 Mazda6

Mazda has released the first official information and photos for its all-new Mazda6 sedan. Curiously, the model will make its debut this week at the Moscow Motor Show.

While teaser photos have been issued previously by Mazda, this is the first time we’ve been given a look at the car in full detail. Based on the ‘Kodo’ design language of the stylish Takeri concept, the translation from free reign to production reality has seen some casualties.

At the front we like the detailing of the grille and the sharp crease line over the wheel arch, which defines the Mazda6, setting it apart from its competition. However, the rear flank and tail lights have been toned down too much, we think. To the point that their rounded edges almost look mismatched compared to the higher drama seen up front.

Overall, though, the new Mazda6 is a fine looking car and we’re sure it will create plenty of sales for an already healthy Mazda Australia.

The interior has seen the biggest change from the concept, which is probably to be expected. However, from the photos we see here, it looks as though Mazda has delivered a well laid out set of controls in a smart manner. We don’t think the interior will approach Volkswagen/Audi levels of refinement, but we also don’t expect it to be disappointment.

You’ll need to start getting used to a new marketing buzzword. Skyactiv and i-stop return from earlier models, but we now must add i-eloop for the brake regeneration system featured in the Mazda6.

Mazda6 programme manager, Hiroshi Kajiyama, declares driving dynamics were at the forefront of their mind while creating the car. “In developing the third-generation Mazda6, we pursued Mazda’s intrinsic core value: ‘driving pleasure’,” he said.

“We wanted to create a car that reacts and behaves exactly as you expect it to.  Part of this involved carefully crafting those parts of the car which you often touch to feel as though they are an extension of your own body.

“The distinctive exterior design hints at the power and agility with which the car moves.  A variety of original innovations support a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.  Mazda’s superb engineering and craftsmanship have created a car that handles so well it seems to respond directly to the driver’s intentions rather than the physical manipulations of steering, braking and accelerating.”

More pics and a comprehensive press release from Mazda can be read below. It’s worth noting at this stage that all specifications listed here relate to the Russian market. Mazda is keen to point out that European, and we expect Australian, specs will differ. Having said that we can’t say we’re expecting any massive changes from what you’ll read below.

Another BMW 3 Series GT sighting

BMW 3 Series GT prototype

With only a few weeks to go before its expected debut BMW is slowly revealing more of the new 3 Series GT.

In this latest set of shots from F30Post we get a good look at the wider kidney grille that will front the F34 GT. Its headlights will be placed a little higher than the F30 saloon, giving the model a quasi SUV look.

It’s difficult to tell at this stage, but it appears as though BMW’s famed hofmeister kink has been given a more rounded look. We’ll have to wait for the final model, we expect, before making final judgement on that.

Expect the 3 Series GT to source its engines directly from the regular 3 Series range.

Robert Kubica completes Fiesta RS WRC test

Robert Kubica

Finally we have some good news for fans of Robert Kubica with word emerging from Europe that he recently tested a Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Apparently Kubica attended an official test session with the Ford World Rally Team, where Jari-Matti Latvala and Petter Solberg were also in attendance.

Ford’s Malcom Wilson was a bit coy only confirming, “We had a four-day development test at a circuit in France, that’s all there is to it. It was a private test and I’m not prepared to comment further.”

So, it’s all a bit hush hush it seems, but Autosport reckon they’ve had the rumour verified and is quoting their source as saying, “Robert drove the car, we know this. And he drove the car well. He has the big passion for rally.”

Whatever the future holds for Kubica we wish him well in his recovery and reckon it would be great to see him back in an F1 car again.

2013 Mazda MX-5 ready to order

2013 Mazda MX-5

Mazda Australia brings word the facelifted MX-5 is now available for order, with the first local deliveries expect in late Spring.

In addition to the cosmetic changes you can see here, Mazda has also fiddled with the throttle mapping and brake booster. They say that results in sharper throttle response and enhanced braking feel.

Mazda Australia’s national marketing manager, Alastair Doak, said: “The MX-5 is an iconic car that just got better. The MX-5 is the world’s best-selling two-seater roadster and these latest design and dynamic upgrades should see it remain firmly on the shopping lists of buyers looking for fun, open-top driving.”

Atkinson happy with MINI WRC debut

Chris Atkinson, WRC Team MINI Portugal, 2012 Rallye Deutschland

Following his credible fifth place in Rallye Deutschland, Chris Atkinson is looking forward to even better things.

During the first day of competition in Germany Atkinson told Autosport: “I said that, at the end of the event, I wanted to be around 0.5 seconds per kilometre off Dani [Sordo’s] pace and we’re there now, so that’s good.

“I haven’t driven on asphalt for three and a half years, so this event is really about focusing on me and my driving—we know the car is up to the job. Finishing between sixth and 10th is my target and we’re on for that right now.”

Great to see Chris managed to better his pre-race expectations, even if it may have been due the misfortune of others.

Using horse racing parlance Atko will be better for the run. “This result has given us a good base to work from so big thanks to the team who have done a fantastic job all weekend,” said Atkinson.

“Our strategy was to get through a tricky rally without making any mistakes and it paid off. We can start fighting a bit higher up now and start moving forward.”

The next event on the WRC calendar is the Wales Rally GB in mid-September.

Sebastien Loeb wins 2012 Rallye Deutschland

Sebastien Loeb, 2012 Rally Germany

We normally get our Citroën World Rally Team news fed to us from a couple of sources, but since Sebastien Loeb racked up his ninth win at Rallye Deutschland on the weekend we’ve not heard a peep. So we apologise for the lateness of this update.

Of course, it’s no surprise to see Loeb out front, his win in Germany was his fifth on end and his seventh from nine rallies this year. Remarkable and a little boring at the same time.

At least there was some change on the second step of the podium with Jari-Matti Latvala managing to sneak his Ford Fiesta WRC in ahead of Citroën’s Mikko Hirvonen.

With four races to go Loeb’s championship lead is 54 points. So it’s still mathematically possible for second placed Hirvonen could overtake the French legend, but we all know it’s not going to happen.

With no pics for you from this rally we bring you a brief highlights video from Citroën, which comes with the following note:

Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena bettered their own impressive record for the most wins at a single event in securing a ninth victory in Germany. The entire team was moved in remembering Philippe Bugalski, who died accidentally a few days ago. In 2001, ‘Bug’ had won the Germany Rally—just before it became part of the WRC calenda—in a Xsara T4. Jean-Paul Chiaroni, his then co-driver and now weather and reconnaissance coordinator for Citroën Racing, stepped onto the podium to receive the cup awarded to the winning manufacturer of the rally.

UPDATE: Citroën’s official team statement has come through and can be read after the break.

A lap of the new Austin Grand Prix circuit

Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas

The F1 mid-season slumber awakens in Belgium this weekend, but today we bring you an early preview of the new Circuit of the Americas track in Austin, Texas. It’s a computer-generated onboard lap with commentary from James Allen and Stephen Hood from Codemasters.

The 5.47km circuit makes its race debut on 18 November. It’ll be interesting to see if the latest Hermann Tilke track is as heavily criticised as some of his others.

Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and 4S revealed

991 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

The story of the Porsche 911 (991) has taken its next step with the release of information for the Carrera 4 and 4S. Of course, the major difference here, compared to the regular 911s, is the addition of an all-wheel drive system, or Porsche Traction Management (PTM) to use the official titile. Hence the 4 in the model designation.

Porsche trainspotters will also know the C4 models have wider hips and in the 991 the extra width is 22mm. The rear tyres are 10mm wider, as well.

They will have also noticed the small dome beneath the front number plate meaning this is the first 911 to offer the option of Adaptive Cruise Control, which will now be available across the full 911 range.

Weight saving measures have enabled Porsche to lose as much as 65kg from the 991 C4S when compared to the old 997 model.

The 3.4 litre and 3.8 litre flat six engines carry over unchanged from the rear-wheel drive models. So that means the Carrera 4 has 257kW on tap, while the Carrera 4S has 294kW.

Extra grip off the line allows the C4S to overcome its extra weight and equal the 4.1 seconds required to reach 100km/h in the rear-wheel drive Carrera S. While the Carrera 4 requires 4.5 seconds, a tenth quicker than its two-wheel drive counterpart.

Porsche has also released details for the Cabriolet version of the C4. If you’re opting for a roofless 911 you could probably care less about its 0–100 times, but we’ll share them with you anyway. The C4 Cabrio takes 4.7 seconds and the C4S Cabrio 4.3 seconds.

Impressively, for car’s of this nature, Porsche claims the combined fuel consumption for the Carrera 4 and 4S sits around 9.0l/100km, give or take.

The official public debut for the Carrera 4 and 4S will take place at the Paris Motor Show and European sales are scheduled for late this year. So you should be seeing these in Australia by early 2013.
