Keep calm and Bernie on

Bernie Eccelstone

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone celebrated his 82nd birthday in late October. Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari president, recently suggested Ecclestone might be too old for F1. Certainly, Bernie can’t go on forever. Although, someone might need to tell him that.

Bernie hit back at di Montezemolo’s claims earlier in the week, “I don’t feel 82, and as a matter of fact I’m now going to Geneva, then to Istanbul to see if we can get back the Turkish GP and [will then] participate at the World Council.”

He continued in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, “And I’m not stopping here, I have a thousand more ideas.

“Do I look in such a bad shape, two weeks after the USA GP that I wanted and somehow created?

“I’m 82 and nobody can deny that. But time ago I used to discuss things with an 88-year-old gentleman when Luca was a 40-year-old. His name was Enzo Ferrari.

“Believe me, at that age he could make me shiver because he was terribly tough, incisive and clear-minded.”

Despite the audacity of di Montezemolo daring to suggest Bernie might not be up to speed, the octogenarian doesn’t hold a grudge against the Ferrari man, “More than once he has attacked me, but in the end we understand each other. I don’t have hard feelings towards him.

“Anyway, I respect his opinion. It’s no drama.”

What is the Porsche 919 going to be?

Porsche 919

Word has come out that Porsche lodged a patent application for the wordmark ‘919’ back in October. The file was submitted to the German Patent Office and the term 919 has appeared on the official register in the past few days.

This news could indicate Porsche has grand plans for an entirely new model. After all they do plan to launch four new models by 2018, two of which will include the Macan SUV and the 918 Spyder. Perhaps the 919 is one of them?

An equally plausible explanation is Porsche is simply protecting the numbering/wording from anyone else using it.

FIA revises 2013 F1 calendar

2012 Brazilian Grand Prix

The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council has revised the 2013 F1 calendar in reaction to the Grand Prix of New Jersey postponement. That race was originally scheduled for 16 June, the week after the Canadian Grand Prix.

Instead, F1 teams will get an extra week to prepare for the British Grand Prix (30 June). The German Grand Prix has been brought forward a week, to 7 July, and will form a back-to-back pairing with Britain.

This has enabled the FIA to open up a space on 21 July which can be used for an extra European-based race, possibly Turkey. Assuming this goes ahead it will maintain F1’s current desire for a 20-race season.

The WMSC also made some changes to F1’s Sporting and Technical Regulations which will affect the 2013 and 2014 seasons. These can be read after the break, along with an update 2013 F1 calendar.

BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe revealed

BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe

Here, in full, are the details for the very stylish BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe. When it goes into production it will become the first BMW model to wear 4 Series badging, setting it aside from its 3 Series sibling.

The F32 4 Series will be both wider and longer than the old E92 Coupe. The base dimensions also differ from the F30 3 Series, so there is more than just marketing in the step to 4 Series nomenclature. A wider track, for example, should provide more assured handling and ride comfort.

Yet, it’s the introduction of new visual elements that we are most interested in with this concept model. The headlight design is very cool, and we reckon that should make it to production without too many alterations.

The dramatic lower front spoiler and rear valance, though, we’re not so sure about them. The look suits a concept model, we just wonder how close the production model will be.

BMW fans will be able to get their chance to get up close and personal with the Concept 4 Series Coupe when it debuts at the Detroit Auto Show next month.

There’s over 40 pics for you to admire after the break as well as a pair of press releases for those who want to appreciate the finer points.

BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition revealed

BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition

BMW surprised itself, let alone everyone else, when it collected the drivers’ and constructors’ championship trophies in the 2012 DTM season. Of course, it was BMW’s return to the category after a 20 year lay off.

To celebrate their success BMW has announced this limited release M3 DTM Champion Edition. Only 54 will be made.

The matte black paint is a tribute to the livery of championship winning driver Bruno Spengler. BMW Motorsport decals have been applied to the roof and bootlid. Inside, alcantara trimmers have had their input, while Spengler is recognised on the dash with his signature appearing next to the edition number. The helmet design of Bruno Spengler has also been referenced on the door sills of the exclusive M3.

The best thing? The €99,000 purchase price also includes entry to a BMW driver training day at the Nürburgring where Bruno Spengler will give the 54 owners private tuition.

Mind, we’re still not sure if that makes it worth the €18,000 premium over a standard M3.

Rolex hoping for good times in F1

Rolex signs as F1's official timepiece

Luxury watch brand Rolex was today announced as the official timepiece for Formula 1. According to Rolex CEO, Gian Riccardo Marini, it’s a match made in heaven.

“This is an exciting step for us at Rolex as the fit between Formula One and our brand feels very natural and, like all great partnerships, needs little explanation,” Marini said.

“In our respective fields, Rolex and Formula One embody the spirit of adventure, superlative engineering and a strong desire to push the limits of technology. These aspirations are enormously appealing to younger generations,” he added.

Mr F1, Bernie Ecclestone, is happy he’ll be getting a new gold watch as well.

“The brand’s prestige, the excellence of its watches as well as Rolex’s passionate and long-standing commitment to motor sports gives it true credibility. This partnership is something that many people interested in Formula One will have been waiting for and should rightly be excited about. Rolex has incredible sporting heritage and therefore Formula One is the right place for Rolex to be,” he said.

The face of Ferrari’s new F70 hypercar

Ferrari F70 teaser image

This blurry image is believed to be our first look at the new Ferrari F70. The photo was taken at a special display on show at Ferrari’s Finali Mondiali dinner held in Valencia last weekend.

The wording beneath the display reads: “A client focused approach with the most complete range ever.”

The Enzo replacement is expected to produce 900hp from a combination of 7.3 litre V12 and F1-style KERS unit. A carbon fibre tub will help keep the car’s weight down, which could be as low as 1100kg according to some reports.

An F1-like seating position is expected, which will complement the F70’s impressive statistics, and make it one of the best ever street-legal F1 experiences money can buy.

It was thought for a while that the F70 would debut in Detroit next month, but any such ideas were quickly quashed and an official launch date remains a mystery.

2013 Audi RS6 Avant officially revealed

2013 Audi RS6 Avant

Audi has reacted quickly to the emergence of leaked RS6 Avant images by publishing their official word. Here’s their quick rundown before you sink your teeth into the full press release and 16 images after the break:

The new Audi RS 6 Avant stands for groundbreaking performance. It is lighter and more efficient than the previous model, and performance has been improved once again. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) takes just 3.9 seconds, and top speed is 305 km/h (189.52 mph). The 4.0 TFSI develops 412 kW (560 hp), but is content with an average fuel consumption of just 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers (24.00 US mpg).

UPDATE: Audi Australia has confirmed with us they plan to launch the RS6 Avant locally late next year in MY14 spec. Wagon haters will have to make do as there are currently no plans for an RS6 sedan.

2013 Audi RS6 Avant gets unexpected unveiling

2013 Audi RS6 Avant

Audi’s latest and rather impressive looking RS6 Avant has been given an early preview thanks to Russian website autowp. A series of eight photos have been revealed showing the latest in RS styling.

No technical details have been revealed, but it appears as though the RS6 starts with the same 4.0 litre V8 used in the current S6 range. In the comparatively lowly S6 the twin-turbo V8 produces only 309kW. We say only because the old RS6 and its 5.0 litre V10 gave us 426 of the most wonderful kilowatts we’ve ever experienced.

Predictions for the new RS6 are around the same mark, with 420kW being the number offered up. That’s a healthy 563hp in the old money. Enough to let it reach 100km/h in around 3.9 seconds.

Back to the styling, then, and the image above shows the classic flared guards we love to see on Audi’s RS models. The front-end treatment is more aggressive than we’ve seen on the RS4 or RS5. It looks pretty good, too. Although, the quattro lettering in the lower part of the main grille is a bit twee, don’t you think.

Overall, though, the new RS6 looks hot. It’s expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March. Let’s see if the emergence of these images forces Audi’s habnd into releasing official details earlier than planned.

[Source: autowp.ru]

UPDATE: Well that didn’t take long! Official stats for the RS6 have now been published by Audi. It gets 412kW/700Nm from its 4.0 TFSI engine. Full details coming soon.

Red Bull Racing basks in own glory

Red Bull Racing story

Red Bull Racing has sent out this teaser for a self-made documentary which will tell us all about how great they are. And actually, when you think about it, they might have a point.

The team came to being in 2005, picking up the pieces left by Jaguar and Stewart GP. In the years that have followed they’ve collected three constructors’ titles and three drivers’ championships. Those results have been achieved through the collection of 34 race wins, 46 pole positions and 29 fastest laps. It’s an impressive haul, by any team’s standards.

And yet, there’s something about these new kids on the block that doesn’t sit right for many F1 fans. Is it the lack of history? Is it that they seem too cocky and brash? Or is it more to do with Sebastian Vettel’s bloody finger?!

Indeed, were it not for the presence of Mark Webber, who joined the team in 2007, we think most Australians would have less cause to enjoy the success of the team.

Check out the brief preview after the break and tell us what you think of Red Bull Racing and their recent unstoppable success.
