Audi TT ultra quattro concept to rock Wörthersee

Audi TT ultra quattro concept

The annual Wörthersee show is just around the corner (8–10 May) and Audi is grabbing the headlines with this TT ultra quattro concept. It’s an über lightweight version of their TT which can reach 100km/h in 4.2 seconds.

At a mere 1111kg the trim and taut concept model has one kW for every 4.9kg, or to look at it another way, 3.6kg per horsepower. That’s thanks also to its 228kW (310hp)/400Nm 2.0 TFSI engine.

Carbon fibre reinforced polymer has been used throughout along with magnesium in the floor to help achieve the car’s low weight. Fibreglass bucket seats from the R8 GT save 22kg, while the wheels shed a further 20kg.

The brake system uses ceramic discs and aluminium calipers and the exhaust is made from titanium. The springs are made by a complex method using fibreglass reinforced plastic as well.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Audi put something like this in series production.

Does the new Audi S3 cut the mustard?

2013 Audi S3 (8V)

The three-door version of the new Audi S3 has just been released in Europe. And while it is a little lighter and quicker than the S3 Sportback we’ll be seeing in Australia it’s still worth taking in the first impressions from those who attended the launch:

Autocar (Greg Kable): The Audi S3 is a very accomplished hot hatch—among the best in the business for pure ability, no less. It is terrifically fast, impressively agile and boasts loads of grip. But, that said, it isn’t as engaging to drive we had hoped. What it lacks in pure back-road excitement, the new S3 attempts to make up for in overall quality. In this respect it is better than any rival out there.

Auto Express (Jack Rix): The new S3 feels as crushingly fast as its predecessor in a straight line, but makes unexpected improvements in other areas. The bassy soundtrack is as close to a six-cylinder as a four-cylinder gets, it feels lighter on its toes in corners and the lightning-fast S tronic gearbox is a perfect match. Dial down the dynamic settings and it’s more refined and comfortable than ever, too. More feedback through the steering wheel would be appreciated, and ultimately the handling feels safe rather than lively, but Audi has done enough to make keen drivers think twice before buying the BMW M135i.

Car (Ben Pulman): The Audi S3 has always been a good all-round hot hatch, but this latest version has a broader repertoire: it’s more refined and the cabin is unmatched in this class, and it’s also more fun to drive hard. The S3 isn’t quite as involving as any of the Ford/Vauxhall/Renaultsport crowd, but I’m not sure that matters when the rest of the package is so complete.

Drive (Jonathan Hawley): As well as being feisty in a straight line the S3 is an agile handler with oodles of grip, the ability to find traction coming out of corners, and the steering is well weighted and precise.

Hmm, it’s a bit of a mixed bag really. Clearly the 8V appears better than the 8P model it replaces, but has it improved enough to mix it with the increased competition from Germany?

The review from Australia’s own Drive is so lacking in detail about the actual driving experience we’re inclined to ignore it. But, based on the other comments, and compared against the list prices of $68,400 for the M135i and $74,900 for the much more powerful A45 AMG, we can’t help but think, as good as the S3 might be, its mid-60s pricepoint might make it at least $5K too much.

Audi RS6 Avant to land in November

2013 Audi RS6 Avant

Fans of immensely powered estate cars can rejoice in the news that the Audi RS6 Avant will arrive in Australia in November this year. That’s a bit earlier than previously expected too.

Audi Australia is keeping mum on exact specification details but says you should start to budget for a list price of around $230,000 for the RS6 Avant.

In return you’ll be blessed with 412kW of power and 700Nm of torque courtesy of Audi’s 4.0 litre twin turbo V8. If you’re running late getting the kids to school you can rest easy in the knowledge that you need just 3.9 seconds to reach 100km/h.

Yet, if you’re expecting the RS6 to have true sportscar pretensions Autocar says you may be best to look for alternatives:

If your relationship with cars (and roads) is a little less one-dimensional, a little less concerned with outright speed and a little more involved with the nuance, flavour and entertainment of actually driving, then, once again, your money is better parked elsewhere.

The duff Dynamic steering must shoulder some of the blame for this, but even beyond its ham-fistedness the RS6 does seem like a car intent on showing what it can do to you rather than what you can do with it.

The only thing we’d add to that is presumably any buyer out there willing to spend a quarter of a million bucks on a station wagon probably already has a more suitable and dynamic sportscar waiting for them in their garage. So, for a highway weapon able to chew up miles with ease, we think the RS6 Avant would be a fine option.

Audi S3 Sportback to be priced from mid-60s

2013 Audi S3 Sportback

It’s not all that long ago that the Audi S3 had the upper-end of the hot hatch market pretty much all to itself. But with the recent or impending arrivals of hyper hatchery from BMW and Mercedes-Benz the four-ringed posse has quite a fight on its hands to earn your custom.

With only 221kW and 380Nm to play with Audi cannot compete on outright performance and that just leaves price. And while it won’t be an outright bargain the new S3 Sportback should undercut the M135i and A45 AMG when it goes on sale locally in December. Audi Australia says the S3 will carry a $65,000–70,000 price tag and will include plenty of standard kit.

If you want the S3 sedan you’ll only have to wait an extra month or so, Audi has announced it will launch in the first quarter of 2014.

Audi knows the S3 is fighting in the toughest market it has ever faced. “It’s a highly competitive market place and we want the many Audi customers, both existing and new, to be delighted with their brand new S3 Sportback,” says Audi Australia’s managing director, Andrew Doyle.

Pleasingly, Doyle confirmed a proper gearbox will be offered this time as well. “We will offer our customers both a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed S tronic transmission when we launch in December this year,” he said.

We look forward to finding out more about the standard level of equipment the Australian-spec S3 Sportback will carry. It’s going to have to be good to compete with its German rivals.

Next-gen Audi RS5 to boast 475hp twin-turbo V6

2013 Audi RS5 Coupe

When the B9-based Audi A5 hits the streets in 2015 it’s expected to lose up to 100kg in weight. There may also be an optional ‘Ultra pack’ offered on selected models for those wanting to save more kilos.

Rather than sacrificing luxury items the Ultra pack could include hollow-spoke alloy wheels, aluminium body panels and lighter engine ancillaries.

The next-generation A5 range is expected to get a light restyling of what is already quite a nice exterior look. It will also benefit from upgrades applied to the A4 range, including an 8-speed S tronic which will likely be available across the A5 line up.

But it’s the news on the range-topping RS5 that interests us the most. Out goes the much loved 331kW (440hp) 4.2 litre naturally aspirated V8, which can trace its roots to the B7 RS4, and in comes a 355kW (475hp) twin-turbo V6 unit.

Let’s hope Audi can nail the handling a bit better this time.

Can a tuned Audi S4 match a stock RS4?

Audi S4 v RS4

Whenever you read pissing competitions on automotive internet forums you’ll often hear the phrase, “Yeah, but if I chip my car it will be as fast yours.”

The inference being that someone can buy a cheaper car, a Golf GTI for example, get an off the shelf Stage 1 tune from APR/GIAC/Revo/whoever, and end up with performance on par, or thereabouts, with a Golf R. Of course, such discussions usually end up in a massive tanty and probably a banning or two as well.

Thankfully, then, we have an adult to try the comparison for real. The adult, in this case, is respected motoring hack Chris Harris and the cars in question are the Audi S4 Avant, with a supercharged 3.0 litre V6, and the RS4 Avant, roaring with a naturally aspirated 4.2 litre V8.

Harris has already filed a great review of the B8 RS4 and has, at various times, shared his appreciation for the supposedly lesser S4. Here, then, in a relatively simple comparison Harris shows us how the effects of some aftermarket trickery from Revo can improve the performance of his recently purchased, well used and poorly cared for S4.

True, we don’t get the exact details of all the mods Harris has done to the car, so as a scientific comparison take this with a grain of salt. As usual, though, Harris has made sure the comparison is worthwhile viewing.

New York 2013: Audi A3/S3 sedan

2013 Audi S3 sedan

Audi has released details of the production-ready A3 sedan. You may recall the new-generations A3 was first previewed in sedan, sorry, notchback form at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Basically the Yanks like boots, sorry, trunks, and that’s why we’re seeing the A3 in this format.

However, as the lead pic shows, the A3 sedan need not be the domain of cardigan wearers, because there’ll be an S3 version as well. It’s no surprise that this pair of sedans are pretty much the same as their A3 and S3 hatchback siblings. And that means the S3 sedan gets the full 221kW/380Nm punch we’re already anticipating in the hatch versions.

Australian buyers will also be given the opportunity to get their hands on the A3 sedan, but not until early next year. We’ll have to touch base with Audi Australia to see if that means we can expect to see the S3 sedan as well.

In the meantime there’s the usual gallery of images after the break and they’re accompanied by a host of videos from Audi USA which tell you all you need to know about the A3 and S3 sedans.

Oh, one more thing, an RS3 sedan perhaps?

UPDATE 3 April: Audi Australia has confirmed the S3 sedan will go on sale locally in the first quarter of 2014.

2013 Audi R8 – Australian pricing & specs

2013 Audi R8 V10

Audi Australia has just launched the facelifted R8 to the local market. With that comes the 404kW R8 V10 plus, boasting the title of Audi’s fastest ever production car. Thanks to its Lamborghini-sourced 5.2 litre V10 and a 7-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission it can knock-off 100km/h in only 3.5 seconds. Its top speed is 317km/h.

It’s just a shame that pricing for the R8 V10 plus starts at $408,200. Add your driveaway costs to that and it won’t be a pretty sight. Good luck to those of you who can afford it. Can we have a drive please?

All models of R8, starting with the $279,500 R8 V8, now include LED headlights. The rear indicators have a new party trick, too. It’s described as dynamic display and the indicator lights up from the inside moving to the outside of the car in the direction it is turning.

Full pricing and specifications are available after the break. Special mention must be made to Audi Australia also for the images they have provided with this release. We’re not sure who the photographer is but we’re sure you’ll agree some of the results are truly outstanding.

Audi Australia to price new A3 from $35,600

2013 Audi A3 Sportback

When Audi Australia launches the 8V A3 Sportback in May they’ll be starting the list pricing from $35,600. That’ll get you an A3 Sportback Attraction, powered by a 1.4 litre TFSI engine with 90kW/200Nm and a 6-speed S tronic transmission. In fact, S tronic will be standard across the range. Manual gearboxes will be available, but by special order only.

At launch there will be four engines offered, the 1.4 TFSI already mentioned will be joined by a 77kW/210Nm 1.6 TDI under the entry-level Attraction specification. Those choosing the higher Ambition spec will have the option of  a 132kW/250Nm 1.8 TFSI or a 110kW/320Nm 2.0 TDI.

Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system (read Haldex V) will be offered later this year, with finer details to be confirmed at the time. Accompanying that addition to the range will be the Audi Connect system which incorporates, among other things, a WLAN hotspot and Google Earth functionality.

Full pricing and specification for the Australian A3 Sportback range will be announced closer to launch.

Audi Bentley Video

Bentley v Audi

Chris Harris on Cars, Bentley v Audi

For his weekly installment Chris Harris takes a look at the Bentley Continental GT Speed. Fair enough, too, it’s got over 600 horsepower and 800Nm of torque on tap from its 6.0 litre W12 engine. But at 2300kg the Speed represents a bit of a quandary. Does all that power go to waste?

Extending the reach of his investigations Harris brings the Audi S4 Avant into the equation. Aside from a steering wheel and four tyres there’s not a lot else in common between these two. On the figures mentioned in the clip the Bentley is £180,000 and the S4 a comparatively paltry £40,000. And yet there are, according to Harris, some very similar traits between the two cars. The overarching link, of course, being the shared ownership of the two manufacturers by Volkswagen.

So, as Harris puts it in his YouTube intro: “Not a natural pairing, but a quick drive in both got me thinking about how VW manages its various brands in terms of character and driving behaviour. All very grown up, I know—but we can’t skid the shizzle out of stuff every week.”

It’s this slightly left of centre style of review that Harris does well at, so if you’re into your cars you should enjoy the thinking behind this comparison.
