Audi A2 Concept images released

Audi A2 Concept

Audi has further previewed its all-electric A2 Concept with a release of new images overnight. The A2 is a car that will compete with the BMW i3 and although it is less radically styled, it still looks quite sharp.

The dramatic line through the shoulder line appears to have LED lighting within that can change colour. Very cool. Inside, the A2 Concept is futuristic minimalism resulting in a feeling of spaciousness.

It’s understood the A2 Concept will feature an 85kW/270Nm electric engine driving the front wheels only. It can reach 100km/h in around nine seconds and has a top speed of 150km/h.

The use of aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic will help keep weight to a reasonable 1150kg. Interestingly, that’s significantly less than the i3; around 90kg.

Audi A2 concept previewed in sketch form

Audi A2 concept

You’re looking at concept drawings of the next Audi A2. The first-generation, launched at the turn of the century, struggled to find a niche and production ceased in 2005. Audi will be hoping this revitalised version will do much better.

Compared to the original A2 the styling now embraces a stronger resemblance to the broader Audi family. Indeed, we quite like the look of this new model.

Of course, we’ll be seeing more of the A2 concept at Frankfurt in a bit over a week’s time. The show special features an all-electric powertrain and four individual seats. Such a layout allows the A2 to use its compact dimensions—3.8m long, 1.69m wide and 1.49m high—to best effect through a number of seating and storage layouts.

We’ve not been given a lot of detail, apart from these sketches, although the ‘matrix beam’ LED headlamps do sound quite interesting. So too the rear foglight, which uses fog to help project a triangular warning.

2012 Audi S8

Anyone who buys a new Audi S6 and doesn’t choose the Avant model needs a damn good talking to. Yes, we’re going to bore you all once again with our Euro wagons are the coolest mantra; for the simple reason it cannot be denied.

Powered by the same 309kW 4.0 litre V8 TFSI found in the S7 Sportback, the S6 can despatch 100km/h in 4.8 seconds (add 0.1 seconds for the Avant). This is achieved largely due to the 7-speed S tronic and quattro combination.

The quattro all-wheel drive system features a self-locking center differential and torque vectoring. We suggest ticking the optional sport differential, too, which better distributes the power between the rear wheels.

We’ll take our A6 Avant in Estoril Blue thanks. Oh yeah, we’ll flick the standard 19” alloys for the optional 20” rims too, please.

2012 Audi S8

The A7 Sportback is perhaps one of the most striking automotive design executions money can buy. Well, let’s add a caveat to that statement and assume we’re talking to buyers who want an executive saloon that’s not a run of the mill sedan.

In the S7 trim you see here, the largest Sportback model on Audi’s books is, naturally, the pick of the x7 lineup. Powered by what will soon become Audi’s ubiquitous 4.0 litre V8 TFSI it has 309kW (420hp) and can knock off 100km/h in 4.9 seconds. Fitted with a 7-speed S tronic we’re sure that power will be delivered to the quattro all-wheel drive system with a minimum of fuss, as well.

We’re not sure if the quilted stitching on the seats is the coolest thing we’ve seen inside a car in 2011, or, well, just a horrible faux pas. One thing is sure, we’d be unlikely to choose the lunar silver colouring shown in the pics below.

2012 Audi S8

Audi has released brief details on its new range of S models ahead of their public debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Let’s start with the new S8. Well, it does have the most powerful engine of the S range, after all.

At the heart of the S family lies a newly developed 4.0 litre V8 TFSI. In the S8 it’s good for a healthy 382kW (520hp), thanks to a couple of eager turbochargers. Should be plenty for a highway blast.

Indeed, the S8 can reach 100km/h in 4.2 seconds for those who like their highway drives in express mode. The new V8 features ‘cylinder on demand’ as well as start–stop technology and those willing to relax a little can sleep easy knowing they’ll sip fuel at around 10.2l/100kms.

Either way you’ll learn to appreciate the car’s 8-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro drivetrain. The quattro system includes a self-locking center differential with the sport differential at the rear axle.

The A8/S8 really is a classy looking large saloon. Its proportions hit the spot very well. It’s large, but doesn’t look too overt. Well sized 20” alloy wheels help complete the look; 21” alloys are available as an option if you feel the a need for more bling.

The S8 goes on sale in Europe in the second quarter of 2012. We’ll have more info on the Australian launch as it comes to hand. For now, there’s more pics and press guff from Audi after the break.

Audi continues urban concept tease

Audi Urban Concept

Audi has released new images of the ‘urban concept’ model ahead of its Frankfurt debut. There’s no new text, just the five images. What we see though, is the urban concept in a more real-world context, even though the images are still computer-generated.

Take a look inside and you’ll get a better insight into the 1+1 seating layout. Audi has cleverly saved space by having most controls mounted on the steering column.

The urban concept really is a nifty looking bit of kit. It’s grabbed the city-car idea and given it a whole new life. In five, 10, 20 years time, will we really see our streets populated with these stylish buzzboxes?

UPDATE: 17 new images added, click to load 2000px super image sizing. The Spyder is our pick, which one would you choose?

2012 Audi S3 spied in California

2012 Audi S3 prototype

A couple of weeks after the garden variety 2012 Audi A3 was spied, a cooking S3 prototype has been seen sunning itself in California. Reports suggest the car will still be powered by a 2.0 turbo four. Power is expected to increase from 265hp to 280hp, while torque may remain at 350Nm; a bit too modest perhaps?

The third-gen S3 will be one of the first cars on Volkswagen’s new MQB platform to feature quattro all-wheel drive as well. S tronic and manual transmissions should be available from launch, and possibly in the 3 door S3 for the first time.

From the spy shots it appears as though the S3, and presumably the full A3 range, will have the option of radar controlled cruise control (note the small dome beneath the number plate mount). Other technology to be found will be stop/start and brake energy recuperation.

If the S3 finds its way into European showrooms in 2012 you’d think it would be late in the year. Based on that, our guess is the S3 would be on sale in Australia in the second half of 2013.

Autocar reviews Audi R8 GT

After seeing the Audi R8 GT up close at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne last month we wondered just what it would be like to drive. Well, thanks to Autocar, we can get about the best look we’re ever likely to get.

Remember, there’s just five of these cars coming to Australia and they have all been sold. Well, if you could buy an R8 that’s lost 100kg and is powered by a 412kW V10 you’d probably do it too.

Audi urban concept goes topless

Audi urban concept

Audi has released two new images of its urban concept. This time, though, it’s in Spyder form. We think it looks fantastic. Aside from the pics there’s not much else to add. Audi has issued another press release, but it’s much the same as before, with the word ‘Spyder’ added in a few times.

VIDEO: Audi urban concept teaser

Here’s the official teaser video from Audi promoting their electric-powered urban concept. It’s a 1+1 seater designed to make city commuting a breeze. This clip was filmed in central Berlin and truth be told two clips from a random spotter featured in our previous post captured more than this clip gives us (see here). Audi will show us the full monty in Frankfurt next month.

Audi Holden Mazda Toyota VFACTS reports

New vehicle sales report – July 2011

FCAI banner

A total of 80,991 new vehicles were sold last month according to official VFACTS numbers. That represents a small drop of 1.7% compared to July 2010.

Steve Payne, FCAI Acting Chief Executive, explains the year-long trend is lower again, “While the drop in sales in July is small compared to the same month last year, the overall drop in sales for the year to date of 5.9% indicates that consumers are continuing to delay new vehicle purchases.”

The apparently unstoppable growth in SUV sales continues, with the segment up 1.8% against July last year. While the luxury end of the SUV market is up 17.4% on year-to-date figures.

Toyota returns to top the charts for the month (12,980 sales), with Holden (10,819) in second and Ford (7769) holding off Mazda and Hyundai.

Audi says 1+1 equals ‘urban concept’

Audi urban concept

Audi has just released these sketch drawings of what they call the ‘urban concept’. Basically they’ve taken the Volkswagen XL1 and given it a personality. It looks pretty cool too, don’t you think.

The issue of whether a 1+1 seater electric powered city car is a genuinely practical proposition is another question altogether. Then there’s the free-standing wheels. They look great, but not sure they would make it into final production.

The ‘urban concept’ is powered by a pair of e-tron motors, one for each axle we assume. We also assume we’ll be seeing more of this car at Frankfurt next month.

Residents of Berlin were given a very brief preview of the car during a film shoot in Potsdamer Platz on the weekend. You can see a couple of YouTube clips after the break. It’s actually quite helpful to see the car in a real-world context. It’s not quite as small as you might think.
