First impressions of the Audi S8

2012 Audi S8

When Audi announced details of its new S8 a few weeks back the thing that made us take note was its 382kW (520hp) twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 engine. Whichever way you cut it, that’s a lot of mumbo.

We’ll soon become very familiar with the new bent-eight as it has also found its way, in various states of tune, into the S7 Sportback and S6. It will no doubt feature in upcoming RS models as well.

The obvious party piece of the new engine in S8 guise is its peak power. But a newly developed cylinder deactivation system also provides plenty of excitement for the anoraks among us.

It seems, more often than not, this new V8 will operate as a V4 and the use of active engine mounts and an active noise control system mean it will be hard to tell you’re only playing with half an engine.

The danger here is the S8 could be all duck and no dinner. Does its chassis and overall driving experience match the inevitable delights the engine will provide? Car magazine, Evo and Top Gear were all on hand for the launch of the S8. After the break you can see what they had to say.

Audi RS1 is getting warmer

Audi RS1 prototype

At this year’s Wörthersee show Audi unwrapped the awesome 370kW A1 clubsport concept car. Not long after they told us Ingolstadt referred to the car as the RS1. Now we have some proof that the car is genuinely being considered.

The car you see above was photographed at Audi headquarters. If you follow the source link below you’ll see more pics. Okay, sure, it’s probably nothing more than an Audi Exclusive creation. But, it does have a quattro drivetrain (as evidenced in the pics) and, well, the rear sway bar wears a sticker with “RS1” on it (see inset).

Of course, there’s nothing official from Audi at the moment, but we very much like the idea of a hi-po RS1 pocket rocket so we’ll take any chance we can to believe such a car will be made.

At the recent Frankfurt Motor Show it was revealed by Volkswagen they would power their new Polo R WRC with a new 300hp 1.6 litre engine. And we reckon right about now you’re thinking what we’re thinking.

Behind the wheel of the Audi Quattro

Audi Quattro

Time for a look at an old rally legend now, with the Audi Quatrro. It’s a car we’ve featured in our Past Master series and we’re always keen to see new material. This review from the Fifth Gear web team gives a reasonable insight into the car’s history and modern day context. Shame about the smoke from test car!

You can see the review in full after the break.

Random wallpaper: Audi Quattro

Audi Quattro

It’s been a while since we posted up a Random wallpaper, but we thought this shot of an Audi Quattro rally car was too good to pass up. Note the hint of flame from the car’s exhaust.

The pic came to us via a press release promoting the UK tour of Top Gear Live, which will be held in Birmingham and London next month. A fleet of Group B rally cars will be on show, making us even more envious that we won’t be there.

You know the drill, click the pic to view the image in 2000px sizing and get ready to ‘Fire up the Quattro!’

VIDEO: Audi RS4 Avant spied at the Nürburgring

Pistonspy brings us new video of the next-generation Audi Rs4 undergoing testing at the Nürburgring. This follows earlier spy shots of the car in action.

As you would expect the driver is fairly hooking in around the Nordschelife. In its current tune the exhaust note seems a little sedate, but there are a few instances where the unmistakable induction growl of a V8 engine can be heard.

Audi prepares to shed weight from next R8

Audi R8 V10 5.2 FSI quattro

Audi plans to shed 100kg from the weight of its next-generation R8, which is due to go on sale in 2014. In order to do this Audi will use innovative bonding technologies to introduce carbon fibre and other materials to its aluminium spaceframe.

The current R8 uses a solely aluminium spaceframe, but this new technique will allow for greater strength; up to 40,000Nm per degree, making it stronger than the likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lexus LFA. There will also be some cost-saving benefits in the event of repair.

Audi’s new bonding method is called ‘Ultra’ and Audi engineer Dr Lutz-Eike Elend explains one of its key advantages, “With this concept you can always just take out and replace the particular elements—even the (central) tunnel. In the event of a side collision, you can take the rivets and bonding out and put the new part right back in.”

Dr Elend also says the next R8’s body-in-white will weigh just 198kg, which is, he says, “better than any vehicle with a carbon-fibre monocoque.”

Frankfurt 2011: Audi MMI technology

Thanks to cnet Car Tech we can take a closer look at Audi’s developing Multi Media Interface (MMI) systems on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

In a large saloon like the new S8, for example, there’s plenty of room on the centre console to fit all the gadgets that control the car’s on board systems; navigation, stereo, climate control and the like. But can we expect the same level of control in a much smaller car, like the urban concept or A2?

Audi RS4 spied

Audi RS4

While the world had its eyes on the Frankfurt Motor Show last week, Audi set its sights on the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife. They were there with a very well disguised RS4 Avant prototype.

Previous speculation has suggested the new RS4 would source its power from the same 331kW used in the RS5. However, we’d not be surprised if quattro GmbH simply turns up the wick on the new 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 now found in the S6, S7 and S8.

When tuned for the S8 the 4.0 litre unit offers 382kW (520hp), that’s a pretty good place to start for an RS4 we reckon. We just hope there’s a proper manual transmission offered.

Frankfurt 2011: Audi RS5

2012 Audi RS5

Audi has followed suit from its 2012 S5 range and given the RS5 a bit of a spruce up as well. Mostly the changes are cosmetic, so that means the 331kW 4.2 litre V8 and quattro running gear remains.

The stylish new headlights are the most obvious changes, but revisions have also been made to the bonnet and grille among other things. Inside you now get a flat bottom steering wheel—finally—and a lot of red bits. Hmm, not so sure about those.

We’re not sure when we can expect to see the 2012 Audi RS5 in Australia, but our guess is late in the first quarter of next year.

Lots of great pics after the break. And perhaps this is the best way to sample the RS5, in photos as the reality hasn’t quite lived up to the hype if the reviews are anything to go by.

Frankfurt 2011: Audi A5 DTM

Audi A5 DTM

Audi has just unveiled its new A5 DTM racecar. Pretty crazy looking thing it is, too. That’s the style in DTM, of course and this new ‘R17’ will hit the tracks in 2012.

The A5 DTM has around 340kW (460hp) thanks to its race-tuned V8 engine. Gear shifts are taken care of by a new 6-speed transmission, pneumatically operated with steering wheel paddles. In line with new cost reduction measures the gearboxes are expected to last 24,000kms.

You wouldn’t believe it by looking at them, but aero packages for the 2012 DTM machines are also less extreme than in the past.

There’s more images after the break, as well as Audi’s press release.
