Lamborghini plans new model for 50th bash

Lamborghini Aventador J

Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, has confirmed the supercar maker will release a new model to help celebrate the company’s 50th birthday next year. Speaking at the LA Auto Show, Winkelmann didn’t give too much away, revealing only that, “It will not be a revival or retro.”

It’s going to be one hell of a 50th birthday bash, too. Lamborghini is asking its owners from around the world to ship their cars to Italy to form a convoy through iconic Italian locations, such as Tuscany and Rome, before ending their journey at the manufacturer’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese. A special web portal has been set up to assist owners with shipping arrangements.

That party will take place from 7–11 May, so we’re not all that far away from finding out what the new model will be. There’s nothing to suggest the spectacular Aventador J from this year’s Geneva Motor Show will enter series production, we just wanted another excuse to feature it here. Besides, the one-off show car was sold over €2 million and we’re guessing the owner would like to ensure he’s the only J owner in the village.

The new model could be an extension of the Aventador range, all the same. Or yet another Gallardo special edition, although we’re not complaining.

Lamborghini is doing well this year, having already bettered their 2011 sales results by the end of October. The Aventador has an 18-month wait list, even with production running at 1000 cars per year. The best the Murcielago ever managed was around 630 units per year.

But Winkelmann knows he’s operating in a tough market and has to convert the opportunities he has. “The global [supercar] market is 25,000 cars, so volatility and opportunity are very close together,” he said.

Winkelmann expects he can rely on the US and Middle East to maintain their demand, but thinks Europe will be tougher and says they are “crossing our fingers” regarding the Asian markets.

Urus gone, ambivalence

Lamborghini Urus concept

Lamborghini’s SUV, the wonderfully named Urus, has been shelved until at least 2017. But CEO Stephan Winkelmann seems unfazed by the revelation, “the Urus isn’t an immediate priority and won’t happen until 2017 at the earliest, if the board decides to sign it off.

“To be honest, we don’t need it right now, as we have plenty of new cars available that are selling well and will continue to sell well.”

We can’t say we’d be too sad if the Urus never saw the light of day.

Thankfully, Winkelmann hasn’t taken his eye of the company’s bread and butter. When asked about the possibility of an Aventador Superleggera he replied, “Well the Aventador is a powerful car, but there is always more. We have a few ideas for this car…”

Administrators claim Lamborghini Sydney stock

Lamborghini at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show

This Lamborghini Gallardo, recently on display at the Australian International Motor Show, is just one of the models reported to have been claimed by receivers Hall Chadwick after Global Automotive Holdings, the parent company of Lamborghini Sydney, went into receivership.

The company’s register on the ASIC website shows  administrators were appointed to Global Automotive Holdings on 26 October, a couple of days before the motor show closed. Drive.com.au reports that Hall Chadwick agreed not to take possession of the two Gallardos on display until AIMS was over.

We understand Lamborghini Sydney has no direct link to Lamborghini and no other dealerships in Australia will be affected. An unnamed Lamborghini source said, ‘‘Global Automotive Holdings shareholders are experiencing personal and unspecified financial issues… With dealers in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, Automobili Lamborghini remains committed to the Australian market customers.”

The spectacular Sesto Elemento on display in Sydney remains property of Automobili Lamborghini, while the Aventador, used in The Dark Knight Rises, will make its way back to Warner Brothers in California.

AIMS 2012 gallery: Lamborghini

Lamborghini at the 2012 Australian International Motor Show

It may be two years old, but the totally spectacular Lamborghini Sesto Elemento easily knocked off the Aston Martin One-77 as the most impressive car on display at today’s Australian International Motor Show media day. It’s being shown in the southern hemisphere for the first time.

The Sesto Elemento has stunning looks and brutal performance; it can see off 100km/h in just 2.5 seconds. Only 20 will be made and at around €1.6 million you need some serious cash to get your name on one. But if you could, you just would. After getting a very close look at the car today we’re sure of that.

In true concept style, and perhaps Italian passion as well, the Sesto Elemento does have a few rough edges. Ask yourself this, though, can a 570hp V10 and 999kg be denied? We think not. We trust you’ll enjoy the pics we have for you after the break.

Also on show for Lambo was the Aventador LP700-4 used in The Dark Knight Rises and the Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante.

2012 Paris Motor Show in pictures – part 1

2012 Paris Motor Show

The 2012 Paris Motor Show is well underway and for those of us who can’t make it we’ve assembled a photo gallery, which highlights what a blue collar show this has turned out to be. There’s no real theme of haute coutoure motoring here. It’s mostly off the rack bread and butter models.

Thankfully, the Jaguar F-Type brings some style and class. Conversely, when you stop and think about it, someone must have actually signed off an be responsible for the Honda CR-V. They should be fired. It is just horrible.

After the break you’ll see manufacturers listed alphabetically from A–L. Stay tuned for part 2 from Paris soon.

Paris 2012: Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4

2013 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4

It’s had more farewell tours than John Farnham but Lamborghini has dusted off the Gallardo one more time, given it a bit of a touch up and come to Paris with a new LP 560-4 model. It still looks fantastic.

As its name suggests the newest Gallardo produces 560PS (412kW) from its 5.2 litre V10. It weighs an even 1500kg and coupled to 6-speed e-gear transmission and all-wheel drive system it can reach 100km/h in a measly 3.2 seconds; 200km/h takes only 11.8 seconds. And you can keep on powering to a v-max of 325km/h. Nice work if you can get it.

Proving there’s more life in the Gallardo than even Lamborghini could have ever hoped for they’ve also created the LP 570-4 Edizione Tecnica, which has flash red detailing, carbon ceramic brakes and a model-specific rear wing.

You can learn more on both cars after the break.

A Gallardo super Nova in the sky?

Lamborghini Nova teaser

Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball. Where were you when Lamborghini was letting fly? Someday you will find me, caught beneath the landslide in a Gallardo super Nova in the sky.

Or something.

Just days before the Paris Motor Show, Lamborghini has released this teaser video with the following text:

#nova is unveiling at Paris Motor Show 2012: September 27th – 9:00 am CET What’s next?

Looks like we’ll have to wait and see what’s next. But it appears that the last last last, we promise this time, last Gallardo could be released. Or maybe it’ll be a brand new model. But, how many special people change?

Turns out Lamborghini actually bought Ducati

Lamborghini Aventador J

When Ducati was sold in April it was widely accepted that Audi signed an €860 million cheque for the privilege. Well, the buyout amount was debated a little, but nobody was in any doubt that Audi was the new owner of the Italian superbike maker.

However, Audi’s own Interim Financial Report 2012, January 1 to June 30—(6mb PDF) states the deal was only finalised on 19 July and that Ducati was bought for €747 million via Automobili Lamborghini SpA.

Okay, this is really just splitting hairs seeing as the Audi Group also owns Lamborghini, but it’s an interesting revelation all the same.

In his opening statement Rupert Stadler, Audi AG Chairman, said: “With the three brands Audi, Lamborghini and Ducati, our Group has given itself a clear profile and embodies sportiness, innovation and a consistent premium philosophy.”

Lamborghini Murcielago drives through BMW Motorrad dealership

Lamborghini v BMW

This black Lamborghini Murcielago has caused chaos after taking out a number of motorcycles at this BMW Motorrad dealership, north of Milan in Italy.

Apparently two bystanders were included in the skittles knocked down by the Murci. Although, thankfully there doesn’t appear to be any reports of serious injury.

It’s been suggested the driver of the Lambo was moving pretty fast before losing control. So it seems to be a case of too much horsepower, not enough talent.

Earthquake brings temporary closures at Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati

An earthquake to the north west of Bologna in Italy has claimed the lives of at least 15 people and brought temporary closures to the Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati factories.

While the Maserati factory in nearby Modena did suffer some minor damage, it’s been reported the supercar makers stopped operations to allow workers to be with their families.

Last night’s earthquake was magnitude-5.8 and followed hours later by a second quake at magnitude-5.3. Last week the same region was affected by a magnitude-6.0 quake which killed seven people, leaving thousands injured.

Salvatore Iannizzotto from Modena police said: “The situation is one of great fear and uncertainty. The population was becoming more relaxed and slowly moving back into their homes. They have now left their homes again.”

Rescue workers are continuing to search for survivors and we wish them well.

VIDEO: Lambo lunacy continues

Lamborghini Gallardo with idiot driver

It seems the latest internet meme sweeping the world is to get into your Lamborghini Gallardo, drive it like a tossbag and see how long it takes until you to spin it around so that you’re facing oncoming traffic.

On the evidence of this video it’s Green 1–Orange nil.

Details on the location and ramifications of this latest clip to come our way are scarce. One detail is pretty clear, though: don’t drive like this on a public road, for any of the obvious reasons that immediately spring to mind.

[Thanks to Pete for the tip]

Sometimes all you have to do is watch and laugh.

Remember kids, there’s always a time and place if you want to fool around. Public roads are definitely not the place.
