New vehicle sales report – December 2012

FCAI banner

A round of applause for Australia’s car buying public who achieved an all-time record of 1,112,032 sales in 2012. It’s only the fifth time Australians have bought more than 1 million cars in a calendar year. Last year’s results represent an overall increase of 10.3% (103,595 sales) compared with 2011.

FCAI Chief Executive, Tony Weber, explained demand for a wider range of vehicles helped to fuel the record result. “Reduced tariffs as well as changing consumer preferences have contributed to making the dynamic and innovative automotive industry that we have today,” he said.

“The 2012 sales result bears that out. Customer demand has been high and the industry has responded with a wide range of vehicles powered by a range of different fuels.”

When you read the material after the break it seems that almost everyone’s a winner except Holden and Ford. The General returned a 9.1% drop in sales compared with 2011, but managed to hold its position as the country’s second-best seller. Although, Mazda is snapping at its heels. Meanwhile, Ford held station, to a degree, returning a 0.9% drop in sales against 2011.

However, when you consider market-leader Toyota increased its annual sales by 20.1%—coupled with strong improvements from other top 10 selling brands like Honda (+18.9%), Mazda (+17.6%), Nissan (+17.4%), Subaru (+18.2%) and Volkswagen (22.6%)—we can’t imagine there’s too many smiles in the boardrooms at Fisherman’s Bend and Broadmeadows.

Individually, the Mazda3 managed to top the charts for 2012, notching up 44,128 sales. Close behind were Toyota’s HiLux (40,646) and Corolla (38,799).

It used to be that one in every four cars sold in Australia was either a Commodore or a Falcon. Not anymore. The Commodore was the fourth-best selling model (30,532 sales), while the Falcon didn’t even make it into the top 10.

Despite 2012’s record result Tony Weber expects a small drop in annual sales for 2013. “During this election year, and with production now having caught up with back orders, FCAI forecasts a national automotive market of 1,075,000 for 2013,” he said.

Uncle Norbert to leave Mercedes at year’s end

Norbert Haug, Mercedes-Benz

Norbert Haug, the bloke who looks like a favourite uncle, will depart his role as Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport at the end of the year. He’s been trackside with the three-pointed star for a touch over 22 years. By mutual agreement his contract won’t be renewed.

“I would like to thank the best car company in the world for more than 22 years, which never had a single moment without passion for me. I particularly wish to thank the Board for the trust and freedom they have always given me with all my activities,” said Haug. “Unfortunately, with one victory in 2012 since founding our own Formula One works team in 2010, we couldn’t fulfil our own expectations.”

During Uncle Norbert’s watch Mercedes-Benz powered Formula 1 cars won 87 grands prix. More impressively, he has overseen a total of 986 races, in a variety of categories, winning almost half, with 439 victories. Mercedes’ success in the DTM, too, is enviable, claiming around 60% of the titles available to him and 54% of races.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars and CEO of Daimler AG, signed off on Haug’s depature by saying: “Norbert Haug was the face of the Mercedes-Benz Motorsport programme for more than 20 years. For me, he put his stamp on a whole era and, as a highlight, he was responsible for the successful comeback of the Silver Arrows to Formula One.

“In the name of the Board of Management and the whole motorsport family, I would like to thank Norbert for his extraordinary commitment to the three-pointed star.”

A replacement for Haug is yet to be named.

Mercedes promoting 4matic for the people

Mercedes-Benz CLA 4matic

Mercedes-Benz has released details on the 4matic all-wheel drive system it will use in the upcoming CLA four-door coupé, shown here in official spy shot pics. They’ve also gone to the trouble of explaining how a tailored 4matic system will be applied to the cooking CLA 45 AMG model.

On first reading, 4matic sounds a bit similar to the Haldex system employed by the Volkswagen Group, among others. That is, the Benz 4matic system will operate is front-wheel drive as a default setting in order to maximise fuel efficiency. Mercedes claims their all-wheel drive system will be around 25% lighter than similar systems used by other car makers.

When required, power is sent to the rear axle through an electrohydraulically actuated multi-disk clutch. Mercedes says the guiding principle of the system is to use it “as often as necessary, as rarely as possible.”

The 4matic system will be coupled to a 7-speed double clutch transmission which has three settings: eco, sport and manual. In sport and manual modes the tolerances for the transfer of power to the rear axle are more focused, allowing for a quicker response and more dynamic handling.

Mercedes has hinted at the engine specs for the CLA 45 AMG saying the 2.0 litre turbo four will boast well over 400Nm of torque. So around 450Nm like the M135i, then?

Both the CLA 45 AMG and the A 45 AMG have been confirmed for Australia. The AMG versions will trail the Australian launch of their matching entry-level models by roughly six months.

The A 45 AMG is scheduled to go on sale locally in the latter half of next year, while the CLA 45 AMG is due to arrive in early 2014.

There’s more detail from Mercedes after the break, including some nerdy diagrams showcasing the 4matic’s tricky bits. Really, you have to check it out just so you can discover what an integrated power take-off unit is!

Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG gets nosey

Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG spy shot

If you recall the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupé from Auto China this year, then you’re probably imagining sweet seductive curves and shiny metal finishes.

While you might not be seeing that level of detail in this spy shot, you can see enough of the front nose to know that the step from concept to production has taken an approving path.

The model in question is understood to be the CLA 45 AMG version, which will piggyback off the A45 AMG and its expected 350hp. We’ll be getting a proper look at the car when it makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013.

2012 Brazilian Grand Prix

Here’s our last F1 in pictures gallery for the year. It captures Jenson Button’s victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix and also Red Bull celebrating Sebastian Vettel’s third world championship.

It may be the last time we’ll see the likes of Kamui Kobayashi. Heikki Kovalainen, Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna in an F1 car for the forseeable future. Of course, we already know it is the last time we’ll see Michael Schumacher at the wheel of an F1 car. And there’s HRT’s uncertain future to ponder as well.

It’s been a great season and we trust you’ve enjoyed us bringing you these galleries throughout the year.

With or without you

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive

Pop megastars U2 have been employed by Mercedes-Benz to produce an audio track of a different kind. The usually quiet SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive needs a sound to please the driver inside the cabin and to alert pedestrians to the car’s presence on the outside.

Fritz Eichler, Head of powertrain, explains: “We have to have an exterior sound by law, to warn people of the car approaching. There are no rules about the external sound because nothing is yet legislated. Until then, we’ll only make the sound for the cabin.”

Currently, Eichler says, the electric-powered SLS “sounds like a train.”

He added, “It just whirrs. So it now has special speakers to relay an artificial sound. It may be possible for customers to have a choice of sounds.”

And that’s where U2 stepped in. Alas, Eichler wasn’t impressed with their work so he established a special AMG recording studio, with its own staff and advisors, to do the job himself.

“We achieved the new sound by breaking it down into smaller blocks and changing the phasing. It’s like a puzzle that you take apart and then put together in a different order.

“It’s based on the V12 engine. We have also the ability to change the note of the sound so the driver can tell, with his ears, that the batteries are losing their charge.

“We can also cancel some sounds we don’t want. For example, stones hitting the underbody of the car as it’s driving. We can apply counter-acting sounds to cancel out the stones.”

Sounds like it may be even better than the real thing.

Will Mercedes really clip the Gullwing?

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing

Yes, we’re milking more from the one Automobile Magazine article, but this we cannot ignore. They reckon the SLS AMG “Gullwing” replacement, due late 2014, will be called the SLR AMG. There’ll be no unofficial reference to gullwings for the simple fact it is said to have conventionally opening doors.

On the positive side, assuming you view the no doubt clumsy to use and expensive to produce gullwing doors as a positive, the V8 powered SLR AMG will be lighter than the model it replaces and will be squarely aimed at the Porsche 911. It’s expected the new Benz will have around 490hp to play with, or 545hp in Black Series trim.

Sharpening the focus in the chase the 911’s scalp there are no plans at this stage for an SLR AMG Roadster.

2012 United States Grand Prix in pictures

2012 United States Grand Prix

A farewell win with McLaren before his switch to Mercedes AMG has been on the cards for Lewis Hamilton for a few races now. He could, of course, win again in Brazil next Monday morning, but for now his entire collection of 21 grands prix victories have been with the Woking-based outfit.

At the moment there is shared love between Hamilton and McLaren. It will be interesting to see how the relationship continues beyond the final race of 2012.

In pondering Lewis Hamilton’s win at the United States Grand Prix, we must also reflect on the race itself. Held at a new venue, reportedly costing US$400 million, it seems as though the locals, and those nearby, loved having a race in Texas. The official race day attendance figure bandied about is 117,429; a very healthy show of support for F1’s return Stateside.

In keeping with that support, we’ve gathered over 100 of the best pics from the teams across the weekend and you can check them all out after the jump!

2013 Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series revealed

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

While we were away enjoying the public race tracks of New Zealand’s south island Mercedes-Benz lifted the lid on its SLS AMG Black Series. And here it is!

The SLS Black is not quite a match for the GT3 45th anniversary edition, but looking at all the carbon fibre adornments it clearly provided inspiration for the Black Series.

It had been suggested the ubiquitous AMG 6.3 litre V8 might be stroked a little to eke out some extra power for the SLS Black. Yet, the noted 6208cc engine remains, although AMG has managed to massage more power out of the engine that always seems to have more left to give.

Peak power is 464kW (631hp) at 7400rpm, while maximum torque of 635Nm is reached at 5500rpm. Thanks to a 1550kg kerb weight and a slick shifting 7-speed DCT you can see off 100km/h in only 3.6 seconds. The rear-axle differential lock also helps ensure no power is wasted.

In order to find the extra 40kW compared to the standard model, AMG has increased maximum revs from 7200rpm to 8000rpm. They’ve also fiddled with the camshafts and associated gubbins, while also modifying the air intake. A completely overhauled water and oil cooling system along with high-strength connections for the conrods also show AMG’s engineers have been working hard.

Switching from a conventional steel exhuast to a titanium system has resulted in the benefits of improved sound and a 13kg weight saving. This contributes to an overall weight saving of 70kg. A liberal use of crabon fibre reinforced plastic body panels has helped here as well.

Ceramic brakes are standard and save 16kg in weight. Also standard is the completely revised AMG Ride Control suspension system. Forged alloy wheels (10×19″ fronts, 12×20″ rears) are unique to the car and save another 4kg. They’re wrapped in grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

And how much will all these changes cost you? We can’t tell you that just yet, suffice to say the answer will be a lot. The SLS AMG Black Series will be officially launched to market in June next year. Expect pricing to be confirmed a little before then.

While you’re waiting for Mercedes to work out how much they need to charge for this rather awesome looking beast feel free to enjoy the pics, video and press material after the break.

The sweet sound of AMG’s Black thunder

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

There’s nothing quite like the sound of a V8 engine at full noise. And Mercedes-Benz has found a way to create a unique aggressive tone to their hand built AMG V8 engines. Here then is the latest spy video of the SLS AMG Black Series and its 6.3 litre V8 in action. It sounds mental!

Best guesses say the SLS Black will have 630hp (435kW) on offer. That’s up a healthy 60-odd hp on the regular SLS Gullwing and 40-plus hp compared to the previous best found in the SLS AMG GT.

Enough on the numbers, cop a load of the sound. Just make sure you crank up the volume to 11!

2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in pictures

2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Kimi has done it! With his maiden comeback victory in Abu Dhabi the Iceman has entertained us all far more than he could ever imagine. The race itself was pretty ho hum for Raikkonen. There was plenty of action going on behind him, but after Hamilton retired Kimi simply had to keep his nose clean and the win would be his. And so it proved.

All we need now is for Kimi and Lotus to sign off on the T-shirt created by Retro Formula 1 and we’ll all be able to remember his radio skillz for ever more.

A gallery of 88 pics await after the break.
