Citroën DS3 – Australian pricing & specs

Citroen DS3 DSport

Citroën has launched its funky little DS3 to the Australian market. The French usually get it right when it comes to hatchbacks, but the DS3 represents one of the more serious attempts to raise their sights to the premium segment. And Citroën has its sights firmly set on MINI.

Miles Williams, General Manager for Citroën in Australia, pretty much admits that with this comment, “The DS3 is a bold, definitive statement of intent for Citroën and a confident step in the opposite direction to its main competitors; it brings a real alternative to a market sector dominated by retro designs.”

Mind, this next comment from Williams could equally apply to the MINI brand, “DS3 is about modernity, creativity, individual style and a driving experience packed with personality. DS3 dares to be different – whilst delivering the comfort, quality, technology and ecologically considerate performance for which Citroën is widely recognised.” Williams is right, though, the DS3 is different and it does bring new life to the premium compact market.

Citroën DS3 R3 wins class at Mont Blanc

Citroen DS3 R3

In addition to his IRC duties with Peugeot new MINI WRC signing Kris Meeke has been building his experience by moonlighting with Citroën as they develop their DS3 R3 rally car. Meeke and the DS3 R3 spent the weekend driving through the French Alps and managed to be the quickest two-wheel drive car at the Rallye du Mont Blanc.

The Citroën DS3 R3 made a successful competition debut by winning its class at the Ulster Rally a few weeks ago.

Australians will get a taste of the funky and fresh DS3 road car later this week, too, so there’ll be more news from Citroën in the coming days.

Porsche Boxster prototype spied at fuel station

Porsche Boxster prototype

This new Porsche Boxster test mule was recently spotted by a member of the public at a fuel station in Germany. It offers a good look at the overall shape of the next model Boxster even though finer details have been covered up.

The current Boxster range has been signed with the Spyder which is fast becoming acknowledged as a modern classic. The new range will build on that legacy with a stiffer chassis to improve handling and more efficient engines to satisfy European regulations.

We should see the new Boxster some time in 2011.

MINI WRC team sign Kris Meeke, Gronholm could be next

Kris Meeke signs with MINI WRC

It has been reported that young UK rally driver Kris Meeke is the first to put pen to paper with the new MINI/Prodrive WRC team. Meeke, currently racing in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, would not confirm the signing saying only, “My focus remains on this year and winning rallies with Peugeot.”

However a source with links to Prodrive has said, “The deal with Kris is done. David Richards has talked a great deal about having a British driver and he’s been as good as his word.”

Meanwhile dual WRC champion Marcus Gronholm will be testing a MINI Countryman WRC prototype in Portugal this week which could result in him being the next major signing for the newest team in world rally.

The MINI WRC team will contest a reduced number of events in 2011 before taking on the WRC full-time in 2012.

VIDEO: Autocar drive the Pagani Zonda R

Pagani Zonda R

After filming the Cinque Roadster clip you’d reckon Jamie Corstorphine from Autocar would be content. But, no, he wanted more. And more was delivered in the form of the Pagani Zonda R. It is powered by a 750bhp 6.0 V12 and weighs in at a miserly 1075kg. You may also remember this is the car that lapped the Nürburgring in 6 minutes and 47 seconds. Simply astounding! All you need is a spare €1.5 million (AU$2.1m) and some change for the taxman.

BMW Australia announces limited-run M3 Pure Edition

BMW M3

BMW Australia brings some great news to M3 fans. They’ve been able to secure a limited-run of 100 unique models which will be called the M3 Pure Edition.

The Pure Edition is available in coupé and sedan form—50 models of each—and has been designed specifically for the Australian market. There’s no changes to the engine at all, so the 309kW free-revving V8 remains the peach it has always been. Perhaps giving a nod to the “pure” nomenclature the limited edition model will only be available with a manual transmission. In addition, there are a number of cosmetic enhancements to help you stand out from the M3 crowd.

Big, black and glossy 19″ wheels are standard trim, fitted with 245/35/19 tyres at the front and 265/35/19 at the rear. High-gloss black trim has been added to air intakes on the bonnet. While subtle dark chrome adorns the front grille, side gills and exhaust tips. On an Alpine White car, especially, these highlights look superb.

The M3 Pure Edition is available standard in Alpine White or Black. However, the following optional colours can also be specified; Le Mans Blue, Silverstone, Space Grey, Melbourne Red, Jerez Black, Mineral White and Interlagos Blue. Quite the choice, really.

Inside a special anthracite cloth complements the standard leather trim. The Novillo leather headreasts have been embossed with the M symbol.

This is all sounding pretty good, right. Well, here comes the best part. The price; yep, these cars, in relative terms are a bargain, with list prices starting at $135,000 for the sedan and $148,300 for the coupé. Sure, that’s still a lot of money, but it represents a very healthy list price saving of around $17K for the sedan, with a more modest, but still very welcome $10K over the regular models.

What’s not to like! The official press release from BMW Australia is available below. Also included is a press release from May last year in which Munich announced the M3 Edition. It’s important to note there are quite a few specification differences, but it would appear the Australia-only Pure Edition has been loosely based on this previous model.

Five stars

Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster

The Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster is sure a very special hypercar, sampled by only a special few. Thankfully, Evo has been kind enough to share their thoughts after spending some time with the car. We’ve only been granted a brief taste of the Cinque Roadster in their online piece, but the outcome seems clear.

The best Zonda we’ve ever driven, much of the praise actually going to its automated gearbox, not seen on non-Cinque Zondas. The smooth roads we tested the car on suit its lowered, stiffer chassis perfectly – although we know from our previous Cinque encounter that while it looks almost race-car low, it copes remarkably well with less-than-perfect tarmac – and the gearchange is so much better than expected.”

How many MINIs you know flow like this?

MINI Countryman

A couple of weeks ago MINI launched their first TVCs for the new four-door Countryman. The ads to date have been okay, but nothing too special. Remember, MINI sets the bar quite high with their usually creative campaigns. Well, the latest Countryman commercial, titled Flow, seems to put things right with its kaleidoscope of special effects.

Of course, an ad like this could never make it to Australian TV screens as it would be banned due to the glorification of speed or some equally lame conclusion. Oh noes, the carz are spinning teh wheelz—won’t someone think of the children!

Check it out after the jump, along with a behind the scenes look and all the previous ads too.
