BMW M Performance accessories previewed

BMW M Performance accessories

In their Paris Motor Show preview BMW advised they’ll be making a stack of new M Performance accessories available. There’s no firm details just yet, but they will include, for the first time, new retrofit add-ons for the F30 3 Series saloon. Similar accessories will follow for the F31 3 Series Touring and 1 Series three door shortly thereafter.

Some M Performance accessories are only for show, namely the very nice looking alcantara and carbon fibre dash inserts. While more credible items such as uprated suspension and improvements in engine performance can also be had.

The M Performance bodykits can also help set your Bimmer apart from the crowd. No word on pricing yet, but hey, your playing with official aftermarket BMW bits, so get ready to empty your pockets!

Gone in 60 seconds?

BMW 1 Series M Coupe

A rather troubling security failure affecting BMWs, among other manufacturers, has been featured on the BBC’s Watchdog television program in the UK.

Simply, car thieves in the UK have been sourcing blank key fobs then breaking into cars, accessing the OBD-II ports, reprogramming the blank keys with a third party OBD-II reader and driving away with no impediment from the car’s onboard security systems.

Reports from a few months back suggest as many as 300 BMWs in the UK have been stolen using this method. Indeed, you can see a video after the break showing a BMW 1M being stolen after thieves carefully broke the car’s window, avoiding the alarm’s movement sensor, and quietly pushing the car away, before driving off, around three minutes after gaining access.

BMW’s response to the BBC hasn’t really inspired much confidence:

“There is no specific BMW security issue here. We, like our customers and those of other manufacturers, are victims of this new high-tech organised crime.

“All our cars meet all security standards and regulations, but as responsible manufacturers we are looking at ways of mitigating against this new kind of attack.”

Virtually all models of BMW can be stolen this way, however BMW UK points out that recent upgrades should put an end to the security weakness:

“None of our latest models—new 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series—nor any other BMW built after September 2011 can be stolen using the method highlighted.”

We’re not sure if any Australian delivered cars have been stolen using this technique, but we’d certainly recommend contacting your dealer to see if your car is vulnerable to such thefts.

Mandatory Autonomous Emergency Braking coming soon

Euro NCAP pushing for compulsory AEB systems

A decision by Euro NCAP to include Autonomous Engine Braking (AEB) in its testing from 2014 onwards has forced the European Commission to make the technology mandatory for commercial vehicles by November next year. You’d expect a similar regime to apply to passenger cars shortly thereafter.

Euro NCAP describes AEB as such:

Autonomous Emergency Braking systems can help to avoid crashes or to mitigate their severity by warning the driver and supporting his braking response and/or by applying the brakes independently. The technology generally uses forward-looking radar, lidar and video systems to provide a complete, accurate, real-time image of the road ahead.

As well as the obvious reduction to injuries and road deaths—a study shows mandatory AEB can cut accidents by as much as 27%—Philippe Jean from the European Commission says the economic benefits should also be recognised.

“Our studies indicate that the resulting reduction in congestion due to accidents would represent an economic value of about €100 million (£78.5m) in Germany alone,” Jean explained.

The decision by Euro NCAP to include AEB testing means it will soon be impossible for a car to achieve a coveted five-star safety rating without the system being fitted.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP hopes their decision will help motivate decision makers into action.

“A faster penetration of these technologies into new cars will make it more realistic for the European Union to reach its target to cut road deaths by 50% by 2020,” van Ratingen said.

“Consequently, Euro NCAP has decided to include AEB assessments as part of the overall star rating from 2014 onwards and hopes that European authorities will soon require AEB as mandatory on all new vehicle types.”

Earlier this year Euro NCAP conducted a fitment survey to learn more about current models fitted with AEB systems. The results are available here.

Even an E64 BMW M6 looks better on nice rims

BMW M6 on 21 inch D2 Forged CV11 Deep Concave wheels

The E64 BMW M6, in our eyes it’s one of BMW’s greatest cock-ups. A glorious V10 engine wrapped up in styling you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. But, as these pics show, there’s nothing a lowered ride and choice rims can’t fix.

D2FORGED are responsible for the wheels, they’re 21″ CV11 Deep Concave running a staggered set up, with 9″ width up front and 10.5″ wide at the rears. The slender spokes, all 11 of them, are set-off nicely by the colour coded Interlagos Blue stripe on the lip.

There’s a few more pics after the break and simply click on each photo to be rewarded with 1600px sizing.

Eyes Free: Apple’s Siri coming to your car

Apple's voice activated Siri system coming to your car

Apple held their Worldwide Developers Conference overnight and brought word they will be integrating their voice-activated Siri system into cars of the future. You won’t have to wait too long, either. The car-based technology is called Eyes Free and should be available inside the next 12 months.

Several manufacturers are ready to embrace Eyes Free, with the likes of Audi, BMW, Chrysler, GM, Honda, Land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes and Toyota said to be on board.

Eyes Free will work with any connected iOS device—iPhones and iPads—and it’s expected you will activate the system initially via a button on your car’s steering wheel. From then on you can talk away seeking the answers to your questions.

Many manufacturers already support limited voice-activated commands to control things like the stereo, Bluetooth connected mobiles phones, and so on. Although their grasp of language can be frustrating at times. We suspect Apple’s Eyes Free system won’t suffer quite so badly, but are not sure if there’ll be an app available allowing you to control your car’s regular onboard functions.

An airbag didn’t save my life

Opel Insignia Euro NCAP crash test

In mid-November 2010 Ron Smith, a Scottish engineer from South Bents in northern England, was involved in a six-car accident. The airbag in his Vauxhall Insignia deployed and it appeared he had survived the crash without suffering any serious injuries.

However, during the impact the airbag was cut open by a slice of glass and some white powder was expelled and subsequently inhaled by Smith. Soon after, he began suffering from shortness of breath and coughing fits.

His wife explained: “We used to walk everywhere and he was always out every night with the dog, but he got so bad that he couldn’t even walk a few steps without my help.”

Smith was admitted to hospital on 5 January 2011, where he was given a chest x-ray and placed in intensive care. Mr Smith, aged 59, died on 31 January 2011, just over two months from the original accident.

An inquest into Mr Smith’s death took place and South Tyneside Coroner Terence Carney declared: “I accept that the death was attributed to bronchial pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis and that it was developed after this incident in November, and the deceased’s exposure to noxious substances.

“This man died as a result of this incident and more pointedly because of the explosion of his airbag, and this death should be recorded as misadventure.”

It’s believed to be the first documented case of a person dying from the inhalation of chemicals discharged from an airbag.

An airbag exploding is quite a violent procedure and is set off when sodium azide is heated to release nitrogen gas. Sodium azide is very toxic, but is mixed with other chemicals to lessen its effect. Looks like car manufacturers may need to go back to the drawing board.

Fancy a crack in a professional F1 simulator

I-Way F1 simulator

Today the Top Gear website brings us closer to I-Way World. The what? Well, you know how some people build rigs for their gaming console with race seats and the like. Imagine you had no budget and could build what you wanted. Anything at all.

That’s pretty much what they’ve done at I-Way in Lyon, France. There’s WRC simulators for rally action, LMP set-ups if you want to win Le Mans and, of course, a small grid of F1 simulators as well.

It’ll cost you €90 for a 10 minute spin in the F1 rig, that’s three minutes of quali and a seven minute race. Reckon you can handle it? How’s this for an intro:

“The steering wheel is weighted up to 70kg through corners and the brake pedal up to 200kg at racing speed. You will also experience around 2G through corners so you need to be physically fit to control the car.

“And if you have eaten you may want to wait – about four per cent of people vomit. And don’t look at the side screens. They project 300 frames per second for an impression of speed and make some people unwell. This can also make you want to… use the bathroom.”

Follow the link below for more. And if you’re still up for it then check out the I-Way website.

Bathurst to be included in Gran Turismo 6

Bathurst to be included with GT6

Thanks to the magic of the internet we can bring word that Australia’s most famous race track, Mount Panorama in Bathurst, appears to be headed for the next evolution of Sony’s Gran Turismo franchise, GT6.

Last week a Bathurst local posting to the GTplanet forums, with the username jjh101, noticed numerous photographers working at the track for a few days. Wearing hi-vis vests and negotiating the track in a variety of vehicles, including a truck with make-shift camera rigs on the back, it appeared something was up. So, going all investigative journo jjh101 strapped a camera phone to his body and went and asked the smiling chaps what they were up to:

jjh101: G’day. Seen you guys here for a few days, wondering if you guys are here for a game or something?
Photographer: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah… A [?] game… Err… Gran Turismo?
jjh101: Oh, Gran Turismo?
Photographer: Yeah, yeah.
jjh101: Is it an update or… Do you think they’re making GT6 or…?
Photographer: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah… Gran Turismo 6 [?] Bathurst

So there you have it. The video can be seen after the break, along with another clip from the same guy showing more Polyphony Digital workers on site scanning, measuring and photographing the track.

Oh yeah, Gran Turismo 6 isn’t expected to be released for another couple of years. That’s assuming Sony can manage to meet a release timetable this time.

Get ready to say ‘Cheese!’

Tele-Traffic Concept II speed camera

Go Auto brings word that Australian police are keen to try a new generation of speed camera which can not only detect speeding motorists from 500m away, but also confirm if they are chatting on a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Made by UK company Tele-Traffic the Concept II speed camera is under consideration by NSW Police. At around twenty grand a pop a multiple order will have some work to do to start paying dividends. That’s assuming such decisions are made on financial grounds, of course, which we would never suggest.

The maker’s intro to the camera reads:

Concept II is a customer configured speed detection and enforcement system for use in the tripod mounted mobile attended mode. For the core of the system it utilises a Type Approved LTI 20.20 UltraLyte 1000 laser speed detection device, a Type Approved Tele-Traffic Display Control Unit, integrated video camera, and professional zoom lens. The remainder is tailored to the user’s requirements. The recording medium used is DVD+R technology which offers greater flexibility for evidence gathering in speed enforcement.

If you’re interested you can even download the Operator’s Manual.

Are we nearly there yet?

GM windows of opportunity

Augmented reality is a term you may already be familiar with, BMW has placed it an automotive context with the Vision ConnectedDrive. Human Machine Interface seems to be the new buzzwords. Toyota gave their NS4 concept plenty of HMI sparkles. And now GM is getting in on the act with the Windows of Opportunity project—a system designed to give rear seat passengers a greater connection to the outside world using their window as a touchscreen interface. Imagine what this could do to overcome the boredom of long holiday road trips!

As this stage Windows of Opportunity is little more than an ideas generation project with the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. But check out the video after the break and see what you think. Will stuff like this ever become reality and if it does would it be a good thing? We think it’s pretty cool.
