Audi, you suck!

Audi quattro concept

Audi is set to scrap its highly desirable 21st century Quattro model, according to Car magazine. Worse, the technology already created for the project, including the EA555 five-cylinder engine, could end up in another bloody SUV. Apparently the market for conventional sportscars is heading south and the fashion conscious Evoque-like crossover is king.

So, instead of reviving the memory of the legendary Ur Quattro, we need to start using the Crosslane coupé as a voodoo doll. Car is referring to the new performance-based crossover as the Q-coupé, we’re referring to it as that bitch who stole our dreams.

The Quattro concept was first shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and we’ve been smitten ever since. We loved its sharp lines, marvelled at the reviews of pre-production models and anticipated its production launch with baited breath. Now, we’re just sulking in the corner. FML.

Paris 2012: Audi crosslane coupé

Audi crosslane coupé

Audi has taken us into their future with the crosslane coupé concept. Key to its construction is its multimaterial space frame, a combination of aluminum, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP).

The new space frame tech will provide benefits for many Audi models in the future, while the exterior design of the crosslane gives us a preview of the next-generation of Q models.

Power for the concept is provided in the form of a dual-mode hybrid set up. A pair of electric motors are joined by a 1.5 litre three cylinder TFSI petrol engine. The electric motor 1 (EM1) is coupled to the TFSI engine and takes on the menial roles of starter motor and alternator.

From rest to 55km/h the EM2 is in control and as speed increases the conventional engine joins the party. If the speed goes above 130km/h petrol engine takes full responsibility.

2012 German Auto Display, Canberra

On a nice sunny day in the nation’s capital the Treasury car park hosted the annual Shannons German Auto Display (formerly Autofest). Normally we’d be involved in the thick of it here at AUSmotive, but other events have conspired against us. In the end it turned out to be good day to check out the camera on our new iPhone 5. We hope you enjoy the pics.

2013 Audi S3 revealed

2013 Audi S3 (8V)

Here’s something for Volkswagen Group fans, the all-new Audi S3. This car will set the tone for a few other models to follow, most notably the next Golf R. Now featuring an EA888-based engine the latest S3 is good for 221kW, up from 195kW (or 188kW in Australian-spec). Torque has been increased by 30Nm to a new total of 380Nm, available from 1800–5500rpm.

We’ll never see the three-door S3 in Australia, but we will get the S3 Sportback. The three-door will go on sale in Europe early next year and the five-door Sportback model will follow in the second quarter of 2013. By our calculations we could see the S3 Sportback in Australia as early as the third quarter; yet to be confirmed by Audi Australia, of course.

With an optional 6-speed S tronic transmission Audi reckons it can hit 100km/h in only 5.1 seconds. If you insist on changing gears yourself you’ll need 5.4 seconds to reach triple figures. But here comes the sweetener, claimed fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 7.0l/100km for the manual and 6.9l/100km for the double-clutch jobbie. Assuming the S3 Sportback can match those numbers, that should be enough to scrape the S3 under the Australian Government’s Luxury Car Tax threshold.

The new S3 rides on the same sized 7.5″ width rims as the old model and the 225/40/18 sized tyres are also the same. However, handling should benefit from the front axle being moved 52mm forward and the 148kg engine, 5kg less than before, being angled back towards the bulkhead by 12 degrees.

That’s all due to the now ubiquitous MQB platform. The modular architecture has also helped contribute to a weight loss of 60kg over the old S3, but at 1395kg it’s still not going to be the lightest hot hatch going around. Of course, some of the weight is due to the quattro all-wheel drive system. The provided press text is light on for detail in this regard, but it sounds as though the quattro system used is very similar to the Haldex IV system used in the 8P S3.

A sophisticated suspension system should ensure handling improvements for the new S3, helped along in no small terms by the optional Audi magnetic ride as standard equipment. A total of three different tunes, also affecting throttle response and steering, can be chosen from the Audi drive select programs. The S3 also sits 25mm lower compared to its garden variety 8V A3 siblings.

You certainly couldn’t say Audi has brought anything radical to the table with its third-generation S3. But we do think think this clear case of minor improvements over the previous model will make for very pleasing car to drive. We can’t wait until the S3 Sportback lands down under so we can sample it for ourselves.

There’s another 30-odd pics for you after the break, along with Audi’s introductory press release. If they add anything new when the car debuts in Paris we’ll be sure to share it with you.

UPDATE: Audi’s 10 minute promo video for the new S3 has been added below.

2013 Audi A3 Sportback revealed

2013 Audi A3 Sportback

Ahead of its debut in Paris next week Audi has released pictures and information for its new A3 Sportback, codenamed 8V. Based on the three-door A3, first seen at Geneva in March, the Sportback has made good use of its MQB platform and rides on a wheelbase which has been extended by 35mm. Overall the wheelbase is 58mm longer than the previous 8P Sportback.

As is often the way with teutonic styling the look of the new Sportback is very much a case of evolution from the model it replaces. Generally speaking we really like the way the new A3 looks and nothing has changed with the addition of the Sportback to the range. The few nips and tucks applied by Audi’s designers have resulted in a small, but noticeable progression, that is more modern and should help keep the A3 at the top of the entry-level prestige market.

Audi has managed to reduce weight across the Sportback range by as much as 90kg compared to the old model. In real terms, a Sportback with 1.4 TFSI tips the scales at 1205kg.

The A3 Sportback is presented here in S-Line trim and when you get inside the addition of a thick steering wheel with perforated leather should be a nice improvement from the previous gen. We’re not entirely sure the cross stitching on the seats is the world’s best decision, but reckon we’ll need to see it in person before making a final judgement.

With the rear seats up the Sportback offers 380 litres of luggage space, which expands to 1220 litres when the seats have been folded down.

As well as the improved interior space offered by the MQB architecture, handling should be enhanced now that the front axle has been pushed forward by 40mm. All engines are mounted in the usual front-wheel drive transverse fashion, but have been tilted backwards by 12° with the exhaust facing the bulkhead. A better balanced chassis being the aim here.

Of course, much of the rest of the Sportback is sourced from the A3 hatchback and you can read more detail on the Sportback in Audi’s press release below. We’ll also be back to add more pictures.

The A3 Sportback will hit European dealerships in February next year and we expect the Australian launch won’t be too far behind.

UPDATE: Additional text from Audi Australia has been added at the end of the press release. Mid-2013 is the word for the first local deliveries.

UPDATE 21 Sep: A new video and 39 extra pics have been added below.

SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive revealed

SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive

This may look like any ordinary Audi SQ5, but it actually costs a bit over one and half times more than a standard SQ5. To use its correct title, this is the SQ5 TDI Audi exclusive concept.

Only 50 will be made and the model will be launched in Paris at the end of the month. Essentially it’s an SQ5 with some fancy leather and alcantara bits. The exterior is differentiated by the Aral Blue crystal effect paintwork and, to us, they look like rather nice model specific alloys as well.

But there’s a cost. In Euro pricing the SQ5 is €58,000 and for a sparkly paint job, some new wheels and a flash interior Audi reckons you’ll be begging them to pay €92,000 to drive this limited model out the door.

Yikes! They haven’t even fiddled with the 230kW 3.0 litre V6 TDI.

Audi RS5 Cabriolet revealed

Audi RS5 Cabriolet

Audi has, quite literally, just lifted the lid off its new RS5 Cabriolet. Quite why anyone wants a topless RS5 we’re not sure, but that’s beside the fact.

Under the bonnet you get the same 331kW 4.2 litre V8 as the RS5 Coupé but in just 15 seconds you can have the wind through your hair and the sound of that V8 rushing past your ears. Curiously, you need 17 seconds to close the lightweight soft top roof.

The RS5 Cabrio goes on sale in Europe early next year, so expect to see them in Australia sometime in the second quarter of 2013.

UPDATE: Audi Australia says, “The Audi RS5 Cabriolet is currently being evaluated for possible introduction into the Australian market.”

Audi Ford Kia Renault Safety Issues Volvo

Audi A3, Renault Clio & Volvo V40 among latest five star pupils

Audi A3

In the most recent test results published by Euro NCAP the newest Audi A3, Renault Clio and Volvo V40 models were all awarded the maximim possible five star safety rating.

The A3 scored 95% for adult occupants and was praised for its strong performance in the side barrier test. However, Euro NCAP state the A3’s bonnet design resulted in marginal to poor protection for pedestrians.

Renault’s fourth generation Clio rated best in the safety assist criterion with 99%, but registered only marginal protection against whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision.

A perfect score was recorded by the Volvo V40 for its safety assist systems. With a score of 88% for pedestrian safety the V40 was praised for its under-bonnet airbag.

Pictures and links to the full reports and videos can be found after the break.

Audi Quattro coming in 2015?

Audi quattro concept

It’s been far too long since we’ve read any speculation on the 21st century Audi Quattro, which debuted at the Paris Motor Show in 2010. Previously there’s been strong suggestions the car will go into full production and last we heard was in February last year when a Quattro prototype under an A5 skin had been tested.

Now we’re hearing the Quattro, codenamed Q35, will be released in 2015 with as many 10,000 models built per year. A worthy launch date for the Q35 could be March 2015, the 35th anniversary of the Ur Quattro.

Word is the Quattro will be position the four-seat coupé between the TT and R8 (although we’ve heard different before, albeit with a smaller production run). As far as competitors go Audi is expected to set its sights on the BMW M3/M4 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupé.

Let’s hope the 300kW five-pot from the show car makes the step to final production. And we’d also like to hang on the almost impossible hope that the car will feature a traditonal manual gearbox, instead of a less involving S tronic twin-clutch jobbie.

2014 Audi A4 to feature Le Mans technology

2014 Audi A4 (B9) rendering

The next-gen Audi A4, codenamed B9 and due in 2014, will be the first model from Ingolstadt to adapt Audi’s Le Mans winning e-tron quattro hybrid technology for the road, Car magazine reports.

So, rather than tricky diffs and fancy coupling devices, the new A4 will drive the front wheels through a conventional internal combustion engine (petrol or diesel), while powering the rear wheels with a pair of electric motors.

The B9 will ride on a new architecture too. Like the smaller MQB platform, the MLB matrix is expected to help the A4 shed around 100kg from finished production models compared to the current B8 range. That means entry-level A4s should tip the scales at around 1330kg.

Undisguised Audi A3 Sportback spied

2013 Audi A3 Sportback

WorldCarFans brings us a good selection of undisguised pics previewing the 2013 Audi A3 Sportback. It’s the best look yet at the five-door A3, which is expected to be on show in Paris.

As we’ve noted before, this is the model our Australian readers need to pay attention to. We’ve previously been tipped that the Sportback is the only layout of A3 ‘hatch’ we’ll see down under. Local fans of the three-door A3, which debuted in Geneva, will be left pining for the sleeker and slightly smaller A3.

It’s not known what the exact difference will be, but the adaptable MQB platform means Audi can use a larger wheelbase for the Sportback. Looks like all will be revealed next month.

Everything we’ve seen inside the new A3 should translate to the Sportback. We reckon Audi has done enough to maintain their position as the maker of some of the nicest car interiors to experience as well.
