Audi City digital showroom opens in London

Audi City. The metropolis cyberstore

Audi City, a new kind of electronic tyre kicker’s dream, brings the virtual into reality with the opening of a new digital showroom in central London.

Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi’s marketing and sales boss, explains, “Audi City combines the best of two worlds—digital product presentation and personal contact with the dealer.

“This new retail format brings us even closer to our customers—geographically, of course, but first and foremost in terms of the quality of our relationship. Audi City offers new freedom for tailor-made services and an even more individual contact with the customer.”

By 2015 Audi plans to have a more than 20 digital showrooms open across the world’s major cities.

It’s pretty cool, we have to say. You start by selecting your preferred model from a tablet then flick it to a life size Powerwall. The videos and pics after the break show it best.

Audi A4 allroad quattro coming to Australia

Audi A4 allroad quattro

Would you like a Subaru Outback, but are a bit of a badge snob? Well we have good news for you. Word has come our way confirming the new Audi A4 allroad quattro will be sold in Australia. It will be the first time the model has been seen in local showrooms and as such Audi is taking a cautious approach by limiting numbers to just 150 models.

The A4 allroad quattro is due to launch in November this year and while pricing is yet to be confirmed, you should expect a list price of around $70,000. A 130kW 2.0 TDI will be the sole engine choice, and is shown below in a list of key specs for the Australian market:

  • 2.0 TDI S tronic quattro with 130kW/380Nm
  • Fuel consumption around 6.0l/100km
  • 180mm ground clearance and a wider track than A4 Avant
  • Offroad detection system (ORD) that automatically adapts the ESP according to road conditions
  • Underbody protection, front and rear, in stainless steel
  • Model specific exterior trim
  • Standard equipment to include xenon headlights, MMI navigation and Audi parking system plus with rear camera

MY13 Audi A4/S4 – Australian pricing & specs

2013 Audi S4 Avant

Audi has just launched its ‘product improvement’ enhanced A4/S4 range to the Australian market. Product improvement is just a marketing name for facelift, but to give Audi credit they have added quite a bit of substance with this mid-cycle update.

Headlining the news is word the latest S4 Avant will now be offered for sale in Australia; it satisfies AUSmotive’s appetite for fast Euro estates rather nicely. Powered by a 245kW supercharged 3.0 litre V6 it can reach 100km/h in 5.1 seconds and, if you behave, sips fuel at the relatively miserly rate of just 8.4l/100km. We’d really quite like one!

The S4 sedan shaves 0.1s and 0.3l/100km off the 0–100km/h sprint and fuel consumption numbers and is priced from $120,400. The stylish S4 Avant starts at $123,900.

Coming back to reality for a moment the entry level A4 1.8 TFSI ($52,700) has had its engine updated and now has 125kW/320Nm. That represents a modest gain of only 7kW, but a much healthier boost of 70Nm will bring noticeable real world benefits.

We do agree with Audi in their claim that the A4 2.0 TFSI quattro is the sweet spot in the range. Priced from $61,700 (sedan) or $64,500 (Avant) that’s where the smart money should go. Under the bonnet is the same engine found in the award winning Golf GTI and it produces 155kW/350Nm.

Audi has paired the Avant 2.0 TFSI quattro with a 7-speed S tronic transmission as standard equipment. Sedan buyers can choose from a 6-speed manual or the S tronic. For both body styles you’re looking at mid 6s to reach 100km/h and fuel consumption around 7l/100km.

Making the case for 2.0 TFSI quattro more compelling is its impressive list of standard equipment, which includes the Technik and Comfort packages. Those packages add things like Sat Nav, xenon headlights, front and rear park assist, electric seats, convenience key and more.

In addition to the models already discussed Audi offers a poor man’s S4 in the form of the A4 3.0 TFSI. It’s available in Australia as a sedan only and for your $93,400 you get 200kW in return.

Of course, diesel technology is well represented and Audi Australia has brought three TDI options down under: the 130kW 2.0 TDI ($57,900), the 150kW 3.0 TDI ($68,900) and a 180kW 3.0 TDI (sedan only, $88,000).

We’re off to spec up an A4 Avant 2.0 TFSI quattro, in the meantime you can read over the full details from Audi Australia below.

Audi R8 e-tron sets Nürburgring electric record

Audi R8 e-tron

Audi has announced the arrival of the R8 e-tron by claiming a new Nürburgring lap record for a series production electric powered vehicle. The all-electric R8 e-tron lapped the Nordschleife in 8:09.099, impressive for a production-based model, but still some way off the Toyota–Radical TMG EV P001 (7:47.794).

The R8 e-tron was first previewed in concept form at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show. According to Audi the production model has a pair of electric motors, each producing 280kW/820Nm (560kW/1640Nm combined).

We’re not exactly sure how this works, and there’s no firm details just yet, but Audi say a total of over 4900Nm of torque can be sent to the rear wheels from standstill. Bring on all-electric power!

Markus Winkelhock, part of the winning crew from the Nürburgring 24 hour race, was at the wheel for the R8 e-tron’s record run. Normally the R8 e-tron is limited to 200km/h, but the limiter was raised to 250km/h for the record.

However, proving the 1780kg e-tron is no slouch, Winkelhock completed two timed laps with the 200km/h limiter still in place and recorded times of 8:30.873 and 8:26.096.

“The record drives were a fantastic experience for me,” said Markus Winkelhock. “Of course, the R8 e-tron is a production car, not a racing car with the assistance of aerodynamics.

“But with its low center of gravity and rear biased weight distribution, it brings with it a lot of sporty qualities. The torque with which the electric motors propel the car uphill beats everything that I know – even if they make hardly any noise in the process, which at the start was really a completely new experience for me.”

The official launch of the R8 e-tron will take place towards the end of 2012. For now Audi has kept much of the finer detail under wraps, but has revealed the car has a range of around 215km and can reach 100km/h in 4.6 seconds. Up to 49kWh of energy is stored in a T-shaped rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is mounted in the center tunnel between the passenger cell and rear wheels.

More from Audi after the break, including some rather nice shots of the R8 e-tron attacking the Nordschleife.

Audi A1 Sportback – Australian pricing & specs

Audi A1 Sportback

Audi Australia has just added the five-door Sportback to its A1 range. It’s still only a four-seater, but the addition of rear doors and a small 16mm increase in the model’s roofline help to make this a more practical option for A1 buyers.

Also added to the A1 range is a new entry level Sportback 1.2 TFSI Attraction costing $26,500 (plus on roads). In exchange for the attractive price you get a not altogether appealing 62kW accompanied by a relatively tardy 11.9 second 0–100km/h time.

Thankfully, the A1 offers more oomph than that and, if you can swallow the pricing, we would recommend either the 90kW 1.4 TFSI (from $33,450, tested December 2010) or the 136kW 1.4 TFSI Sport (from $42,500).

Despite its small size, all A1 models bring the peace of mind offered by a five-star rating. The frills come via the Attraction and Ambition trim levels and total of 12 exterior colours, including three roof contrast options. The A1 brings standard equipment like a 6.5″ infotainment screen, Bluetooth connectivity with including streaming audio, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel and more.

Audi R8 e-tron prototype spied

Audi R8 e-tron

The marketing benefits of Audi’s 2012 Le Mans win will soon be seen on the road when 1000 R8 e-tron evaluation models hit the streets later this year. Thanks to that 11th victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe, the world is more aware of the e-tron brand than it’s ever been.

Of course, the e-tron name has been with us for a few years now. The original R8 e-tron concept was revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show after all.

A near production ready R8 e-tron has recently been seen out on the roads in Europe ahead of its evaluation launch. We’re not sure if the prototype version here lives up to the specs of the original show car. But to refresh your memory the Frankfurt concept featured a total of 230kW, courtesy of an electric motor at each wheel, and a staggering 4500Nm of torque.

At first glance the R8 e-tron looks much the same as the conventionally powered petrol models. A large bonnet scoop and the lack of exhaust tips at the rear are the best clues that this R8 is not like the others.

The fourth estate

Audi RS4 reveiwed by Chris Harris

Last week we brought you the early thoughts of the motoring press on the latest version of the Audi RS4. Now it’s the turn of Chris Harris in video form, who has just filed his online review for Drive following the European press launch.

Harris starts by going back to the B5 RS4, then the B7 model, before seeing how the new B8 RS4 sits alongside those that have gone before it. We think he should have included the RS2 Avant as well—the true origin of the RS4—but can understand why he didn’t.

We get presented with a great sense of what the earlier RS4s did well and what they did poorly. Indeed, for a while there, we see Harris performing the role of used car salesman rather well. Similarly, a wide range of feedback is given by Harris on the new car. Again, negative aspects are balanced with positive thoughts. In the true sense of the word, this is a great review.

However, adding further modern day context, Harris brought along a fourth estate to the party. Watch and enjoy!

Audi S1 lives at the Nürburgring

Audi S1 prototype

The otherwise standard looking Audi A1 is believed to be a cooking new S1 model. Quad exhaust tips give us the first clue that this is a warmed over version of the A1 and those odd looking wheel hubs could also be used for evaluating a quattro all-wheel drive system.

Who knows whether this will be an S1 or even an RS1, but expect it to be based on the extreme A1 quattro. Limited to 333 examples, that car used a 188kW 2.0 litre turbo four nicked from the bigger S3.

Latest speculation suggests the S1 will use a detuned version of that 2.0 litre engine, with a power figure of around 162kW. Although, previous reports have speculated on the development of an all-new 1.6 litre turbo providing around the same power.

We don’t really mind how Audi gets there, just so long as they do!

2012 Le Mans 24: Audi v Toyota

On paper Toyota’s return to the LMP1 category at Le Mans in 2012 was an abject failure. Yet, with an interrupted development program, they have much to be proud of. Like this battle between Benoît Tréluyer in the #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro and Nicolas Lapierre in the #7 Toyota TS030 Hybrid.

In a high speed fight for the Mulsanne Straight the Toyota finished in front and took the lead of the race. Let’s hope in 2013 they find the reliability required to keep pace with Audi for the full 24 hours.

Lapierre gives us his side of the story: “I’m leaving the pits to start my fifth stint, the third on the same set of tyres. I know he’s ahead of me and I don’t have much time to ask questions. Honestly, I’m not thinking about where I’m going to overtake him. I attack and I see traffic ahead of him in the second chicane. I can take my chance at Mulsanne corner…

“I’m able to pass him at the exit of Mulsanne. He passes me back at Arnage. I could have closed the door but I prefer not to take any chances and I retake him at the exit of the corner. I know at that point that it’s very important to pass at that spot. The Porsche curves follow, and I know that he won’t be able to pass me after that. And that’s what I’m able to do.”

2012 Le Mans 24h: Audi post-race report

Audi wins 24 Hours of Le Mans 2012

The sun has set on a remarkable 11th 24 Hours of Le Mans win for Audi and but for a minor lapse of concentration from Marc Gene in the #3 R18 ultra they would have filled the first four places. Still, seeing your team standing on all three podium steps would no doubt please those signing the cheques.

Adding to Audi’s notable list of achievements at Le Mans, the R18 e-tron quattro can now lay proud claim to being the first car to win the endurance classic using a hybrid powered drivetrain. That sits nicely alongside Audi’s first win with TFSI technology in 2001 and then with TDI power in 2006.

Despite the apparent lack of competition Audi Sport Team Joest is to be congratulated for encouraging their four cars to continue racing. The two Toyotas had withdrawn before half race distance and it would have been easy for Audi to tell their drivers hold station and close the race down.

Thankfully they didn’t and as a result we saw some good battles between the #1 and #2 cars at the front and fastest lap times tumbled in the dusk “happy hour”. The 80th running of the Le Mans 24 hour race was the winner.

Of course, among the euphoria there are stories within the story. Before you read Audi’s official debrief of the race we leave you with two quotes that highlight the agony and the ecstasy. First from one of the winning drivers André Lotterer and then from Allan McNish, who took an off-track excursion while leading the race into the 22nd hour, thereby costing his #2 car its shot at victory.

André Lotterer: “It’s brilliant to have won yet again! That’s an incredibly nice feeling. It was a really strenuous race. A year ago, we were battling against Peugeot and this year against Toyota at the beginning of the race. Unfortunately, our rival retired. But we contested a very fierce race against car number ‘2’ in our team as well. Audi Sport allowed all of us to give everything. It was real racing, and in your own team that’s particularly interesting.”

Allan McNish: “I’m devastated. I’m sorry for our team: Dindo, Tom, the engineers and the mechanics. They did a perfect job throughout the race. Despite a few problems we were in contention for victory up to my accident.”

Keep an eye out for our upcoming photo gallery of Audi’s win.

Audi dominates on way to 11th Le Mans win

Audi R18 e-tron quattro wins 2012 Le Mans 24 hour race

The #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro (Fassler/Lotterer/Treluyer) has led a dominant Audi 1-2-3 victory at the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hour. In doing so, Audi becomes the first manufacturer to win Le Mans with a hybrid powered car, and they did it in style with the #2 R18 e-tron quattro (Capello/Kristensen/McNish) finishing in second place.

It’s the second win for the Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer crew who have gone back-to-back and successfully defended their 2011 victory.

Coming home in third place was the #4 R18 ultra (Bonanomi/Jarvis/Rockenfeller). Upsetting a clean sweep of the top four places for Audi was the Lotus sponsored #22 Rebellion Racing Lola (Prost/Jani/Heidfeld). Just one lap behind, in fifth place, was the #3 Audi R18 ultra (Dumas/Duval/Gene).

A special mention for the sixth placed car, too, the #22 JRM HPD ARX03a-Honda featured Australian David Brabham.

While the history books will show Audi dominated the 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans it was far from smooth sailing. All four cars spent time off the track to varying degrees. The two most notable incidents came with just under three hours to go when Marc Gene driving the #3 car, in fourth place at the time, crashed into the barrier on the exit to one of the chicanes on the famous Mulsanne Straight.

More drama followed moments later when Allan McNish, leading the race in the #2 car, went off the track at the Porsche Curves, while attempting to lap a slower Ferrari 458 Italia GTE entrant. And with that went the race win.

Both Audis limped back into pitlane where some efficient repairs had both cars back out on track inside 15 minutes. Alas, neither car could regain the positions lost. McNish’s crewmate Dindo Capello was celebrating his 48th birthday in what is expected to be his final Le Mans race. Meanwhile, Tom Kristensen missed out on his chance to add to his all-time Le Mans record of eight race wins.

Earlier in the race Toyota had taken the challenge up to Audi with great success. Indeed, the #7 TS030 took the outright lead in the sixth hour. Almost as soon as the #7 car took the lead the sister car crashed out dramatically after Anthony Davidson tangled with a GTE Am Ferrari 458 Italia. Davidson suffered fractures to his back, but is expected to make a full recovery.

A Safety Car period followed the Davidson crash and on the restart the #7 Toyota, with Kazuki Nakajima at the wheel, clipped the Nissan DeltaWing forcing the experimental Nissan into eventual retirement. An alternator problem saw the #7 car drop down the field, before an engine failure ended Toyota’s promising return to Le Mans inside 11 hours.

We’ll have more from Audi in the next day or so. For now you can see video of the two Audi crashes from the late in the race after the break. And a full list showing all finishing positions can be seen on the FIA World Endurance Championship website.
