Audi SQ5 TDI revealed at Le Mans

Audi S Q5

Audi has used its winning turbo diesel heritage at Le Mans to unveil the SQ5, powered by a twin turbo 3.0 litre V6 TDI. Helping it keep pace with the threat posed by BMW’s X5 M50d, the SQ5 has peak numbers of 230kW/650Nm and can reach 100km/h in 5.1 seconds.

As you’ll hear from the videos after the break, the first Audi S model to be powered by a TDI engine sounds as good as it looks. With dual twin-tipped exhausts that’s just as well. One of those fancy new sound actuators ensures the sound is piped inside the cabin.

The SQ5 is fitted with an 8-speed tiptronic transmission and Audi say it can use diesel fuel at the rate of 7.2l/100km on the combined cycle. Of course, an all-wheel drive quattro system is standard equipment.

We’ll find out if/when we can expect the SQ5 in Australia, in the meantime there’s a brief press release from Audi and a selection if images for you after the break.

UPDATE: Audi Australia tell us they’re very keen to secure the SQ5 for local sale. We expect they will, but for now, nothing has been confirmed.

2012 Le Mans 24h: Audi qualifying report

Audi qualifying, 2012 Le Mans 24 Hour race

Audi is pretty chuffed that its R18 e-tron quattro has found itself on pole position for the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hour race. It’s no surprise then that there’s lots of exuberant quotes from the team after such a strong qualifying performance.

Andre Lotterer, the man responsible for the 3:23.787 pole winning lap, reckons his new car is pretty good. “The car was running like it was on rails, simply incredible,” the 31-year-old German said. “The guys at Audi Sport did a top job yet again and made my first pole position at Le Mans possible for me. Many thanks to them for this!”

You can read more from Audi Sport, including quotes from the drivers of all four cars, after the break.

Allan McNish on driving the R18 e-tron quattro

Audi R18 e-tron quattro

The Audi R18 e-tron quattro has just entered the history books as the first hybrid powered car to claim pole position for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. By carrying the term “quattro” in its title we know this car is all-wheel drive, but it’s not really like any quattro system we’ve seen before.

Rather than developing this car from the ground up Audi has, from outside, appeared to add the hybrid drivetrain to last year’s race winning R18 ultra, which was powered by a 3.5 litre turbo diesel V6.

For the R18 e-tron quattro the V6 diesel remains and powers the rear wheels only. A flywheel accumulator, similar to the system used in the Porsche GT3 R Hybrid, captures power under braking and offers up that power to the front wheels at speeds over 120km/h. In a way, it’s like the car is powered by two separate drivetrains.

So what’s it like to drive? Thankfully, two-time Le Mans winner with Audi, Allan McNish, is on hand to give us a brief explanation in the video below…

Audi R18 e-tron quattro secures pole at Le Mans

Audi R18 e-tron quattro on pole at Le Mans

The #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro (Fässler/Lotterer/Tréluyer) has lived up to its number and secured pole position at Le Mans. In doing so Audi has created history by becoming the first hybrid powered car to start the endurance classic from P1. Andre Lotterer posted a time of 3:23.787 early in the final session, which was enough to win pole position.

It will be an all-Audi front row after the diesel powered #3 Audi R18 ultra (Dumas/Duval/Gene) qualified in P2. Toyota has shown it will be very competitive by splitting the four Audis as well; the #8 TS030 Hybrid (Davidson/Buemi/Sarrazin) will start from P3.

If reliability goes well for the two major teams we could be in for a super race. Final qualifying has only just finished and we’ll update you when official statements from Audi and Toyota come through.

For the record, with a lap time of 3:42.612, the Nissan DeltaWing has qualified in P29. When the car was first announced Nissan were claiming the DeltaWing would post lap times in between the leading LMP1 cars and the LMP2 category. A total of 15 LMP2 cars will start the race ahead of the DeltaWing.

Audi RS4 Avant reviews start flowing in

2013 Audi RS4 Avant

The new Audi RS4 Avant has just been launched in the UK, which means we can share with you a few initial thoughts from those who have been lucky enough to drive it. The previous B7 RS4 is one of the most highly acclaimed RS models quattro GmbH has produced. So, how does this all-new version stack up?

Autocar (Giles Newton):If you were lucky enough to know the old RS4 at all, you’re going to wonder where all the vorsprung’s gone, at least at first. Drive it merely moderately fast and the RS4 is quite a remote car, especially if you make the mistake of paying extra for variable ratio dynamic steering… Actually the entertainment offered by the old RS4 is there, and with an added dimension, but you’ll need to look – and drive – harder to find it.”

Pistonheads (Chris Harris): “For many people the RS4’s blend of badge, all-weather performance and brilliant styling will already have sealed the deal. I agree that it’s a compelling recipe. But it isn’t perfect and in lacking that one-stop omnipotence and not having enough torque for low-pulse devastation, for me it doesn’t have the magic of the B7 version.”

Whatcar? (Tom Webster): “RS4 buyers probably won’t be looking for the sensible option, though; instead, they’ll choose it because it can be both a relatively comfortable cruiser and a high-revving sports car. The only disappointment is that it doesn’t thrill that much at normal speeds. The Mercedes C63 AMG Estate feels more special more of the time.”

Hmm. If you read the reviews in full the underlying tone is one suggesting that not much progress has been made from the old model, which ceased production almost five years ago. At first glance, then, it appears Audi may have kicked an own goal. Which is a real shame.

Audi previews 24 Hours of Le Mans

Audi previews 24 Hours of Le Mans

Let’s be honest, if Audi doesn’t win its 11th outright title at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend it will be a major story. This year, for the first time, they’re trying to do it with a new diesel-hybrid. Officially the car is known as the R18 e-tron quattro and there’ll be two of them chasing the win at La Sarthe.

Defending champions Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer will step into the #1 R18 e-tron quattro. While seasoned trio Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish will drive the #2 hybrid.

For good measure Audi will also be racing two conventionally powered R18 ultras. In the #3 car will be Romain Dumas, Loïc Duval and Marc Gené. Joining them in the #4 entry is Marco Bonanomi, Oliver Jarvis and Mike Rockenfeller.

Highlighting Audi’s recent dominance at Le Mans is the fact the 12 factory drivers have a combined total of 19 wins in the renownded 24 hour event.

The four cars are essentially the same, both feature a 3.7 litre V6 TDI with variable turbine geometry. Of course, the first two cars are complemented by the hybrid-quattro system. Helping to set the two models apart is a lighter livery on the R18 e-tron quattro cars, with a darker scheme on the R18 ultras.

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport, says despite a good showing at the 6 Hours of Spa last month they expect Toyota will be tough competition.

“At Le Mans, we’re competing with a totally new line-up compared with previous years. For the first time, we’re fielding four vehicles and two different concepts, the R18 e-tron quattro and the R18 ultra, under our factory commitment,” explained Ullrich.

“We used the race at Spa as a ‘dress rehearsal’ for Le Mans and managed to finish it with a good result. We started adapting our vehicles to the track on the test day.

“This time, we’re also in the situation of meeting with Toyota, whom we expect to be our strongest rival, for the first time in a racing situation. We don’t know yet where exactly our opponent will stand. In any event, Le Mans is a completely different challenge every year that has to be mastered first.”

Audi’s detailed preview can be read after the break. During the race you can keep up to date via Audi’s official channels using twitter, Audi tv and Audi Liveracing.

Audi A6 Avant – Australian pricing & specs

Audi A6 Avant

Audi Australia has just launched the A6 Avant to the local market. They’re kicking off with two relatively modest four cylinder engine offerings: a 130kW 2.0 TDI ($82,900) and a 132kW 2.0 TFSI ($81,800). Both models are front-wheel drive and employ a 6-speed double-clutch gearbox.

The new A6 Avant boasts a 70kg weight reduction over the previous model. Yet Audi’s claims of being a lightweight construction pioneer are countered by the still slightly porky 1630kg kerb weight of the 2.0 TFSI version. Although, it is worth noting that makes the A6 Avant 140kg lighter than the heaviest BMW 5 Series Touring offered in Australia.

On paper, the power figures of the two models offered seem underdone, but Audi claims the 2.0 TDI can reach 100km/h in 8.5 seconds, while the 2.0 TFSI needs just 0.1 second more. Add to that fuel consumption predictions of 5.1l/100km for the diesel and 6.5l/100km for the petrol and suddenly the A6 Avant seems more than adequate.

Luggage capacity in the A6 Avant beats the 5 Series Touring, with 565 litres available when the rear seats are up, expanding to 1580 litres when down. But, the margins are so narrow you’d be hard pressed to pick the added space.

We’ve not confirmed this with Audi Australia, but we expect six cylinder offerings from the local A6 saloon range won’t be too far away for the Avant.

After the break we’ve the official press release and we’ve also prepared a few downloads for you as well. Ensuring you’ll have virtually everything you need to know about the A6 Avant right here at AUSmotive.

VIDEO: See the Audi A1 quattro reach v-max

Audi A1 quattro

The Audi A1 quattro: only 333 will be made and they cost an absolute bomb. Financially speaking, it makes no sense at all. But forget that for a moment and consider what Audi has done here.

They’ve gone and stuffed a 188kW 2.0 litre S3 engine and quattro all-wheel drive system under the skin of the funky A1. Throw in some cosmetic tweaks to give the car a more muscular appearance and you end up with a Frankenstein-like show car special. Which it was. But then Audi went and made it. For real.

Here, then, is a short video with Christian Gebhardt, from German mag sport auto, giving the A1 quattro a good seeing to. Along the way he finds an empty road and pushes towards v-max!
