BMW, Hyundai, Mazda and Peugeot latest to achieve Euro NCAP 5 star rating

Euro NCAP crash testing

In the latest round of Euro NCAP testing the BMW 3 Series, Hyundai i30, Mazda CX-5 and Peugeot 208 have been granted the maximum five star safety rating.

Euro NCAP say their thresholds surrounding pedestrian protection have increased significantly in 2012, making it harder for manufacturers to reach the highest possible rating. The results from the four tests show manufacturers are taking the new regime on board, but there is still some work to do.

Of the four cars mentioned here the BMW 3 Series achieved the best pedestrian protection result achieving 78%. Euro NCAP has described this as “commendable” for a medium sized saloon with no active bonnet, as seen on the Volvo V40. Meanwhile the Peuegot 208 returned a score of 61%, narrowly surpassing the 60% minimum required to contribute to an overall five star rating.

Audi has also received the Euro NCAP Advanced reward for the “Pre sense front plus” technology available on its new A6. The system employs two long range radars to monitor cars ahead and will activate the brakes to mitigate or avoid an accident if the driver fails to act.

Euro NCAP’s press release can be read after the break, along with videos and pictures of the four cars tested. The next round of results from Euro NCAP will be published in August.

Audi releases Truth in 24 II

Le Mans 2011 film Truth in 24 II

Audi has just released Truth in 24 II: Every second counts, their film about the 2011 Le Mans race. You’ll recall it was a race with the full gamut of emotions for Audi.

Two of their cars were destroyed in horrific crashes—thankfully neither Allan McNish nor Mike Rockenfeller were seriously hurt—while their third and final car hung on to win the company’s tenth Le Mans title by less than 15 seconds.

The film has a dedicated website and readers from Australia, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and United States should be able to download it now for free via iTunes.

Audi returns to Le Mans on 16–17 June to defend their title with the R18 e-tron quattro. This time the competition will come from Toyota, after Peugeot dramatically stopped its sports car program in January.

A short preview and press release from Audi of America can been seen below.

Audi R8 facelift shows minor work

Audi R8 product improvement

Audi plans to give its stunning R8 some minor cosmetic work before the next-gen model appears sometime around 2014, or maybe even 2015. These spy shots give us a few clues of what to expect for the facelifted R8, or product improvement to use correct Audispeak.

It appears as though LED headlights could become standard fare, with revised housings. And also the front grille has received minor work, although a train spotter would be happy to notice it. At the back this V10 model has round exhaust tips, instead of the oval shape used on the current model.

These changes should be seen on production models before the year is out. Perhaps our Australian readers may need to wait until early 2013, but that’s just a guess on our part.

Audi wins the 2012 Nürburgring 24 hour race

Audi at 2012 Nurburgring 24 hour race

Audi won a dramatic 24 hour race at the Nürburgring yesterday. It was the 40th running of the endurance classic, but this was their first win and was capped off in style with a one-two victory.

The race was won by the #3 Team Phoenix Audi R8 LMS ultra, with the #26 Mamerow Racing entry coming home one lap behind.

Ausi has put in a lot of time, effort and money towards winning this race and their faith in the product was displayed by the seven cars entered. Now they have their win Audi is overjoyed. Here’s a selection of comments from post-race:

Dieter Gass (Head of Racing Commitments Audi Sport): “That was an absolutely fantastic race and a great result for Audi. We’ve waited a long time for this victory – today is the day. It was an exciting race from start to finish. On one occasion our leading car became the innocent victim of an accident but we fought back again to the front to take a one-two finish. Really an exciting result for Audi.”

Werner Frowein (quattro GmbH): “What shall I say? I’m just incredibly happy. My thanks go to our Board Member Michael Dick who made this fantastic project possible. And obviously also a big thank you to the teams and drivers who have all done a fantastic job. We’ve worked hard for years for this victory. It’s just a dream that now even overall victory follows the earlier class wins.”

Dirk Theimann (Team Manager Audi Sport Team Phoenix): “A great day for Audi and for Phoenix Racing. We have won this race with three different brands, but the win today is the most emotional for us. I dedicate this victory to Werner Frowein because he has always backed this program.”

We’re still pretty chuffed that Warren Luff was able to take part in the race. It’s a shame his car didn’t make it to the end. We certainly hope it’s not the last time we see an Aussie at the wheel of an Audi factory car at the Ring.

There’s over 150 images from the race for you after the break, sorted in numerical order based on car numbers. Also included is a pair of press releases from Audi Motorsport to complement the photo gallery.

VIDEO: Days of Thunder

Carlos Sainz drives Audi R8 LMS at Stiges Terramar

Stiges Terramar is a little known oval racing circuit near Barcelona in Spain. Its concrete construction, featuring 60° banking, was completed around 80 years ago. It’s one of the oldest tracks in Europe, apparently second only to Brooklands in England.

In 1923 Stiges Terramar hosted a sanctioned Grand Prix event. However, the gate receipts were taken by the builders who were trying to recover unpaid funds from cost overruns. No prizemoney was able to be passed to the drivers and the circuit was never used for a GP race again. Minor events were held sporadically over the next three decades, with the last recorded action being in the 1950s.

Until now. Red Bull grabbed a pair of Spanish driving stars—dual world rally champ Carlos Sainz and current DTM racer Miguel Molina—and put them in a top-spec Audi R8 LMS and said go your hardest lads. The result is a nicely produced video which returns the thunder of racing to Terramar.

The clip has plenty of history about the track, too. Only trouble is the voiceovers are all in Spanish. Good for you if you can understand it, but if you just want to watch the action fast forward to about five minutes in.

DTM 2012: Round 2 (Lausitzring) in pictures

DTM 2012, Round 2, Lausitzring

After a 20 year absence, it took BMW just two rounds to return to the top step on the DTM podium. Bruno Spengler completed a near flawless display in his M3 to claim victory in Round 2 and register BMW’s 50th win in the category.

Mercedes driver Gary Paffett followed his win in Round 1 with a second place at the Lausitzring. In third was Augsto Farfus for BMW. The highest placed Audi driver was Matthias Ekström back in fifth.

Paffett leads the race for DTM Champion on 43 points, ahead of Mercedes teammate Jamie Green (30) and Bruno Spengler (25). Thanks to Paffett’s good early season form Mercedes heads the Manufacturers’ championship (96) from BMW (54) and Audi (52).

The DTM field heads to Brands Hatch in England next weekend for Round 3.

Audi RS3 coupé rendering

Audi RS3 coupe rendering

In their wisdom Audi only ever made the RS3 in a five-door Sportback layout. Being lovers of three-door hatchbacks here at AUSmotive that made us a little sad. But automotive pixel maestro Theophilus Chin has come to the rescue with his work on the RS3 coupé you see above (and below).

Chin has mixed equal parts A1 clubsport and RS Q3 concept to create his vision of an RS3 coupé and we think it’s tops.

DTM 2012: Round 1 (Hockenheim) in pictures

DTM 2012, Round 1, Hockenheim

Mercedes-Benz got off to a flying start at the opening race of the revamped DTM series in Hockenheim on the weekend, seeing their cars cross the line in first and second place.

Gary Paffett, McLaren F1 team reserve driver, won the first race of the year ahead of teammate and fellow Brit Jamie Green. Mattias Ekström claimed the final podium step for Audi. Andy Priaulx was the highest placed BMW in their return to DTM racing. He was in sixth place.

After the break we have assembled a nice gallery of photos from all three manufacturers; click each pic to load a 2000px super image.

There’s also a couple of videos from the first few laps of the race. The commentary is in German, but if you persist you will be rewarded for some choice comments on Ralf Schumacher’s driving skillz (language warning).

Audi Lamborghini Targa Tasmania Video

Targa Tasmania 2012: Lamborghini v Audi

With thanks to Tasmania’s Southern Cross TV we can bring you this excellent in-car comparison from Targa Tasmania. On top of screen is Jason White in a Lamborghini Gallardo, below is Matt Close in an Audi TT RS. At the time, White was leading the event in Modern outright and Close was in third place.

The tarmac covered is TS19 Castra from Day 3 (click here to access a map of the stage). The Lambo was five seconds quicker over the 7.73km stage and it’s interesting to see where it was able to build its lead.

Audi RS Q3 concept photo gallery

Audi Q3 RS concept

A couple of days ago Audi gave us details of its RS Q3 concept which will make its public debut at Auto China 2012 in Beijing next week.

The RS Q3 features a TT RS Plus sourced 265kW turbocharged five cylinder and that alone makes it a pretty cool machine we reckon.

Here’s a bunch of photos to complement the original story. If you like ’em make sure to click each pic to load a 2000px version.

Audi RS6 Avant spied stretching its legs

Audi RS6 prototype

The hi-po version of the Audi A6 Avant has been spotted testing on the Nürburgring. The third-gen RS6 should be good for around 540hp thanks to a new twin-turbo V8.

That’s actually down a bit on power compared to the astonishing Lamborghini-sourced V10 in the old RS6. When we drove that back in 2008 we said: “The power and the subsequent hit of adrenalin are insanely addictive in this car.”

We can only imagine Audi will be working hard to ensure none of that rush is lost in the new model, despite two less cylinders and a bit less power. Audi may continue to stick with a conventional torque-converter slushbox (8-speed) for the RS6 with concerns the 7-speed S tronic may not be able to handle the grunt expected.

It’s expected the RS6 will make an official appearance at the Paris Motor Show later in the year, before going on sale in 2013. It should pave the way for an RS7 Sportback sometime next year.

Ducaudi deal officially announced

Ducaudi, 18 April 2012

As expected, Audi announced overnight they had completed a takeover of premium motorcycle manufacturer Ducati. The buyout figure hasn’t been confirmed by Audi on record, but it’s believed the sum was around €860m (AU$1.08b).

In a company statement Audi Chairman, Rupert Stadler, said: “Ducati is known worldwide as a premium brand among motorcycle manufacturers and has a long tradition of building sporty motorcycles.

“It has great expertise in high-performance engines and lightweight construction, and is one of the world’s most profitable motorcycle manufacturers. That makes Ducati an excellent fit for Audi.”

Meanwhile, Reuters reports these comments from Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch-Gladbach: “I can’t think of a concrete reason for Audi to warrant a business case for buying Ducati. Ducati doesn’t enhance Audi’s business model in any way, it’s just a trophy in the wall cabinet.”

Audi’s official statement justifies the purchase: “The progressive control systems and special combustion chamber process of Ducati engines, their resulting sporty character, and Ducati’s extensive know-how in lightweight construction thus offer great potential for AUDI AG and the Volkswagen Group.”

Ducati becomes the twelfth trophy in the Volkswagen Group cabinet, joining other performance brands such as Bugatti, Lamborghini and Porsche.

The iconic Italian bike maker started life in 1926 making parts for radios, before producing its first motorcycle in 1949.
