Audi RS Q3 concept revealed

Audi Q3 RS concept

Audi has pretty much confirmed a RS Q3 will make it into production by revealing this concept model ahead of the Auto China 2012 show. The RS Q3 gets a full whack of five-pot power, too, with the 265kW unit from the TT RS Plus.

To ensure the handling does not make a complete mockery of all that power Audi has lowered the RS Q3 by 25mm. That seems like a lot, but the standard Q3 sits surprisingly high on the road, so it should still be okay for urban assault duties.

We think the RS styling tweaks for this concept are right on the money; it just looks fantastic. The Ordos Blue paint colour works really well. Inside, though, things get a bit more questionable. Let’s just say it’s an acquired taste and we hope we never acquire the taste.

Sure, question marks, for us, always remain over this apparent insatiable desire for SUVs. Market forces are at play here and Audi (plus other manufacturers) are merely responding to what the punters want. And if they want an RS Q3 then, good luck to them.

Last week we had a turn in a regular Q3 2.0 TFSI quattro (review on the way) and we reckon the addition of those two letters—R and S—could make the Q3 something quite special.

Check out the full release from Audi after the break, including a few more pics.

Ducaudi announcement imminent

Audi rumoured to buy Ducati

The Audi buyout of iconic motorcycle maker Ducati we reported on last month is close to being finalised, Reuters reports. It’s understood Audi has completed its checks into the company and has found no problems.

Audi currently holds rights to exclusive talks with Ducati’s major shareholder, Investindustrial, about a possible takeover but they expire on Sunday (15 April).

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera has already reported a deal between Audi, Volkswagen and Investindustrial will be signed next week (18 April).

Assuming all goes ahead as expected the Volkswagen Group will be keen to exploit Ducati’s expertise in high-revving lightweight engine technology. The application of such technology to cars will no doubt find its way from city cars and supercars alike, as lightweight continues its resurgence as the new black in auto making.

Fourtitude renders and ponders an RS3 sedan

Audi RS3 sedan rendering

A bit over 12 months ago Audi unveiled its A3 concept at the Geneva Motor Show. It’s widely accepted that an A3 sedan will be making its first appearance for the benefit of the US consumers. Indeed, it may only ever be available in limited markets; North America and China perhaps. Audi of America hope the addition of a sedan will help them triple annual sales of the A3, which currently sit around 10,000 per year.

At the moment, for reasons unbeknown to AUSmotive (and perhaps punters in the US), the S3 is not offered for sale in America. However, it stands to reason if the US is effectively getting a platform just for them that Audi will indulge them with more powerful models. Remember, the A3 concept was fitted with 300kW 2.5 litre engine based on the current RS3.

Therefore, the chaps at Fourtitude have taken the A3 concept, added it to the new RS4 Avant, and come up with the rendering you see above. More than that, though, they’ve taken up the cause of lobbying Audi to ensure an RS3 sedan becomes a reality:

We’ve shown the render to a few sources at Audi and, inside these offices, it’s been met with smiles. One source even suggested energy created by such renders only helps the cause for such products (take note photoshoppers). That said, we hear the taillights may change a bit from our concept-based conversion.

Interesting to read the acknowledgement from the Audi staffer that outside renderings such as this can help build the case internally. Check out the link below for Fourtitude’s full story. It offers a pleasing mix of market analysis and fanboi cheering.

Audi Q3 – Australian pricing & specs

Audi Q3

Are you an ‘Urban Navigator’? If so it’s your lucky day because not only has Audi created your very own label, they’ve created a car just for you. Of course that is the Q3 you see here. First announced around this time last year, the Q3 is now available in Australian dealerships.

So just what is an Urban Navigator? According to Audi you fall into the following categories: successful young professionals (30-39), a recreational middle-aged couple or family, or active empty-nesters and wanting to show-off to your neighbours. Okay, maybe we altered that last descriptor a little bit.

Anyway, the Q3 is a smart looking crossover that’s sure to find a willing clientele. In Australia you can choose from either petrol or diesel power, both turbocharged four-cylinders and both available in two different states of tune.

Starting the range at $44,800 is the 103kW 2.0 TDI with a 6-speed manual transmission. It’s the only model in the local range not to feature a quattro all-wheel drive system. You can opt for a 130kW 2.0 TDI with quattro and a 7-speed S tronic transmission. That’ll cost you $54,500.

Petrol power comes in the familiar form of a 2.0 TFSI engine with your choice of 125kW or 155kW. If you go for the lower engine output you can choose between a 6-speed manual box or the 7-speed S tronic. Pricing starts at $47,000, with a $1950 premium for the double-clutch gearbox. While the top-of-the range model is priced from $56,000 can only be had with the S tronic.

Rear cargo space is 460 litres, or 1365 litres with the rear seats folded down. Or more use, perhaps, is the 64 litre fuel tank. With consumption figures ranging from 5.2l/100km (103kW TDI) to 7.7l/100km (155kW TFSI) that will offer a noticeable difference in range compared to a similarly specced hatchback.

As you’d expect the Q3 is reasonably well appointed with a tailored ESP system, Bluetooth for your phone and streaming audio as well as all the drive assistance features you could hope for. The Q3 can also be optioned with Audi drive select, which allows you to choose from dour different driving modes on the fly (Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Efficiency). To finish things off there are 12 exterior body colours to choose from as well.

There’s more from Audi Australia after the break, including a short press release. If the Q3 has raised your interest we suggest you download the detailed PDFs we have for you at the end of the article.

C’mon Audi Australia we #WantAnR8 too!

Last year an innocent tweet by US resident Joanne McCoy expressed her desire to have an Audi R8. For a laugh she included the hashtag #WantAnR8. So what, you say, people do stuff like that all the time. Now. There’s another one. And again.

But, back then, Audi of America saw Joanne’s tweet and decided to make her day. So they found out where she lived and turned up to her house, in a 412kW R8 V10, and said, “Here, drive this for a day.”

Pretty cool, huh.

Now, in a more organised fashion, Audi of America is repeating the dose. This time though they’ll be working eight days a week and offering the same courtesy to eight individual winners. All the winner will have to do is decide, do they want to enjoy the R8 V10 on the track, or for a day on the streets.

The video above has been created to promote the latest campaign. So, what would you do: track or street? And, what chance of Audi Australia following suit?

2013 Audi A3 driving footage

When the new Audi A3 was officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show Audi Australia weren’t willing to divulge their launch plans. Our guess is the new A3 will be on display at the Australian International Motor Show in October before going on sale locally early next year.

Seeing as you can’t see the car out on the streets you’ll have to make do with this YouTube footage, brought to our attention by Audi UK.

As soon as we hear something concrete from Audi Australia and their A3 rollout we’ll let you know.

VIDEO: Audi R18 e-tron quattro teaser

Audi R18 e-tron quattro

Audi has released a promo video to promote its new R18 e-tron quattro. If you’re an Audi fan we’re certain you’ll love it.

They’ve chosen to look back at their motorsport heritage, starting, of course, with the Ur-Quattro rally cars, before culminating with their latest Le Mans challenger.

It’s a well produced clip and even if you’re a bit cynical of Audi’s motorsport pedigree we think you’ll give this effort the thumbs up.

[Thanks to Gareth for the tip]

Would you buy a Ducaudi?

Audi rumoured to buy Ducati

Audi is on the verge of buying debt-ridden Ducati, Car magazine reports. The Italian superbike maker is currently some €200m in the red and up for sale. There are several interested parties, including India’s Mahindra and Hero, Daimler and, perhaps a little strange, Volkswagen too.

You’ll recall Mercedes-Benz has a marketing/sponsorship deal with Ducati and on the surface it would make sense if the two companies made their association stronger. However, Audi has struck a deal with Ducati that gives them first right of refusal to buy.

An internal Audi team titled Project Eagle has been charged with managing the Ducati deal and is currently assessing the suitability of the buyout. It’s believed Audi will pick a number between €50–100m and won’t be drawn into an informal bidding war. A mid-April timeline is expected for the takeover to be finalised.

Volkswagen Group’s leader Ferdinand Piech is the man behind Project Eagle and he has coveted Ducati for some time. It’s reported Piech regrets not buying Ducati in 2008 when it was on the brink of bankruptcy. He hasn’t had to wait long to for a second bite at the cherry.

2012 Geneva Motor Show in pictures – part 1

2012 Geneva Motor Show

After a couple of days for press previews the doors to the 2012 Geneva Motor Show are about to be opened to the public. Figuring you probably can’t make it we’re bringing you our biggest photo gallery ever. That’s right, there’ll be over 200 images from the floor of Geneva for you to enjoy.

We’ve kept things varied and ensured there’s dream cars, like the Ferrari F12berlinetta and Lamborghini Aventador J, as well as everyday stuff like the new Audi A3 and the Subaru Impreza Hatch. Then there’s the Valmet Automotive Dawn. We’re not quite sure what that is and you’ll see it in part 2 of our gallery, to be added later today.

After the break you can enjoy the first installment where we’ve taken an alphabetical approach and presented manufacturers from A–K.

Geneva 2012: Audi A3

2013 Audi A3

Audi has released images and details on its all-new A3 model, codenamed 8V. As is the case with most of the major German marques the new model is a clear evolution of the car it replaces. In general terms we think the new A3 looks pretty good and expect it will do well for Audi.

So far we’ve only got images of the 3-door hatchback to show you. We received unofficial word a while back that it’s unlikely Audi will offer the 3-door for sale in Australia. That includes the range-topping S3 as well. We expect to see details from Audi on the 5-door Sportback before the year is out.

It’s also worth noting that Audi has been a bit cheeky with these pics by fitting most of the cars shown with the optional S-line bodykit. Check out the studio pics of the white TDI model towards the end of the gallery below to see what a ‘plain Jane’ A3 will look like.

New technology from the larger cars in the Audi range has filtered down to the A3, which includes things like adaptive cruise control, side assist, active lane assist and traffic sign detection, among others. Full LED headlamps will also be made available as an option at a later date. For now if you want trick lights you’ll just have to make do with bi-xenons and LED tail lights.

The interior of the new A3 is a nice step from the previous 8P model and some of the ergonomic issues of that model have been addressed in the all-new A3. The now dated infotainment system is in desperate need of an upgrade too, so the features in the new A3 will be most welcome.

Although, it’s not what the new A3 has gained that is most impressive, but rather what it has lost. By following this maxim: “The right material in the right place for optimal function,” Audi has shed 80kg from the previous model. An entry level A3 now weighs 1175kg, which is quite good really. The bonnet and front wings are aluminium while a mixture of steel forming techniques has been used to make the rest of the body. Remember, this is the first model to be built on Volkswagen’s new MQB platform so we can expect many more cars from the Volkswagen Group to be lighter in the future as well.

Audi has announced three engines to begin with: a 90kW 1.4 TFSI, a 132kW 1.8 TFSI and a 105kW 2.0 TDI. A 7-speed S tronic is standard equipment in the 1.8 TFSI, while the other models come with a 6-speed manual, although the S tronic can be optioned. As the model range increases so will the engine line up.

The third-generation A3 goes on sale later this year in European markets. Our guess is you’ll be seeing the new A3 in Australian showrooms early next year, following an appearance at the Australian International Motor Show in October. If we hear anything different from Audi Australia we’ll let you know.

There’s a raft of information for you after the break, along with over 50 images. Oh, it looks like those leaked pics were the real deal too.

UPDATE 7 March: On the new A3, Audi Australia says, “Australian launch date, pricing, and specification is not yet available.”

Updated Audi A5/S5 range now on sale in Australia

Updated Audi A5/S5 range

In July last year Audi gave its A5/S5 range a mid-cycle facelift. That range is now on sale in Australia. A revised list of prices and press information are available after the break.

Briefly, the new A5/S5 features Audi’s latest LED daytime running light design as well as other exterior and interior cosmetic enhancements. For the local range 125kW 1.8 TFSI and 130kW 2.0 TDI engines have been introduced. They join the familiar 2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TFSI and 3.0 TDI options.

Updates to the electromechanical power steering help reduce fuel consumption by as much as 0.3l/100km across the board. Who would have thought power steering systems would demand so much fuel?
