Swiss motorist cops AU$316,000 speeding fine

Ferrari Testarossa

Swiss authorities are known for their intolerance of rule breaking, and so this has been proved with reports of a motorist being fined 299,000 Swiss francs (AU$316,000) for driving through the village of St Gallen at 100km/h. Wowsers, that’s a lot of moolah!

Behind the wheel of his Ferrari Testarossa at the time the driver has a vast fortune, estimated to be AU$24 million, as such the court ordered a fine commensurate with his wealth.

“The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed,” the court said in its judgment of the driver.

The previous record fine in Switzerland was a comparatively feeble AU$117,000 charged in 2008 to a Porsche driver in Zurich.

NSW Government to trial ‘Big Brother’ speed limiters

NSW Government speed limiters for carsThe use of GPS devices to monitor speeding motorists is set to be trialled by the New South Wales Government. Approximately 100 cars in the New South Wales Illawarra region will be fitted with the ‘Big Brother’ style device. The satellite based system will make a sound to alert the driver if they are speeding. Failure to slow down will prompt the device to cut fuel to the engine, forcing the car to drop its speed.

The trial is set to last for 18 months and, if deemed successful, the NSW Government could consider extending the use of the system.

Details of how cars are selected for the trial is not clear at this time and without firm details of how the system actually works, or how suddenly it cuts the fuel supply, there is potential for such a system to cause as many accidents as it will allegedly save.

Three months jail for 255km/h Hume Freeway speedster

The Herald Sun is reporting a story about Victoria’s fastest recorded speeding driver. Justin Pickering, a 20 year old P-plater driving a Subaru WRX STi, was clocked at 255km/h near Seymour, about an hour north of Melbourne—or a mere thirty minutes if you drive like the young bloke! But that’s not all, Pickering had been recorded at speeds of over 200km/h the previous day near Holbrook in NSW. The speed freak, already with multiple traffic offences to his name, took things a step further when he was initially stopped by NSW Police and he cheekily sped off as the Police officer got out of his car to approach Pickering. He was finally apprehended by Victorian Police in Melbourne’s outer suburbs the following day. He’s definitely not the messiah, and is definitely a very naughty boy. The offences took place in August 2007 and his sentence was handed down earlier today. Along with his jail term Mr Pickering will be without a licence for 5 long years. Will that be long enough?
