Caterham Top Gear

All in all it’s just another brick in the mall

Top Gear & Caterham R500 in Lego

Check this out, this is the coolest! Those funky kiddy entertainers at Lego have paid homage to Top Gear and the Caterham Superlight R500.

The Caterham featured in Series 12 of Top Gear back in 2008 and won the program’s coveted Car of the Year award in the same year. That was all the inspiration required for LEGOLAND’s chief model maker, Guy Bagley, “My colleague remembered that the Stig had put the R500 through its paces and how incredible it was on the track. It’s such a timeless and iconic car that it was a ‘no-brainer’ as our choice for the motorsport area, having already decided to feature Top Gear. Its design lends itself particularly well to our bricks, too.”

It’s enough to make you want to be a kid again!

Volkswagen Polo gets three doors and five stars

Volkswagen Polo 3 door

Volkswagen is getting in on the Frankfurt gig with a new three-door Polo to be revealed there in a few weeks. To get us in the mood the chaps at Wolfsburg have released a few pics and here they are for your viewing pleasure.

Previously the mini-Golf had only been seen in five door guise, here and here. Check out the pics and presser from Volkswagen AG after the jump.

UPDATE: Volkswagen has just announced the new Polo has achieved a five star Euro NCAP crash rating. More details, including crash test footage, at the end of the article.

MINI Coupé Concept

MINI Coupe Concept

As expected, here is a full set of MINI Coupé Concept images. Also included with the images is MINI’s full press release which contains everything you need to know and more.

The most important thing to report is the Coupé Concept is fitted with the range-topping engine from the John Cooper Works. That’ll see 155kW being put to the road through front wheels and kept in control by MINI’s ever capable and direct chassis.

The distinctive profile of the Coupé Concept gives an overall height of 1356mm, some 51mm lower than the regular Cooper S hardtop. Length and width remain unchanged at 3714mm and 1683mm respectively.

Some details of the hot rod like roofline appear a bit fussy in photos, but one gets the feeling the car will look great for those lucky enough to be in Frankfurt when it makes its public debut. The chunky rear spoiler actually looks like it will have a meaningful purpose, with airflow being directed down the rear window increasing rear downforce.

Leading MINI website MotoringFile predicts the Coupé Concept will find a life in production form within 18 months. Perhaps more importantly, they reckon the car will remain largely unchanged from an aesthetic point of view.

So, you’d best check out the extensive image gallery and press release after the jump.

MINI 50 – birthday gallery

MINI 50 - birthday gallery

In case you’ve missed it, Mini turns 50 today. The feisty icon of British motoring became known worldwide and carved a niche that noone ever knew existed back in 1959. Cheap and cheerful made Mini big in the 1960s and beyond. Now, under the stewardship of BMW, the MINI brand enjoys new life and celebrates its 50th birthday with security and market stability.

BMW may have taken away the cheap, but they have kept, and strengthened the cheeky persona, while enhancing the brand’s driving credibility. Further developing its reputation for razor sharp handling and go kart immediacy.

Over 1.5 million MINIs have been sold since the brand was relaunched in 2001. BMW now sells MINI in 80 countries across the globe. The plans for the brand seem to know no bounds as BMW explores new possibilities for the MINI marque.

To celebrate this most magnificent of motoring birthdays AUSmotive has compiled a gallery of 50 images that relive the last 50 years from Mini through to MINI. It seems everyone knows someone who had a Mini, or even a MINI. And this gallery is no different. In fact, you might even see someone you know! All images can be accessed in larger sizing by clicking on individual pictures.

Happy birthday MINI!

(Fans of the classic Mini will enjoy this “incredible” AUSmotive feature posted in May.)

Today is the 50th birthday of the Mini. German publication Autobild has celebrated the milestone by breaking the embargo on images of the new MINI Speedster concept. Today we have photographs, but the car, officially called the MINI Coupé Concept, will be revealed in full at Frankfurt next month.

Looks pretty cool, hey. There’s a few more pics after the jump, or you can check out the detailed post at MotoringFile.

Audi RS3 – another Frankfurt debut?

Audi RS3 rendering

Could the reveal of a new Audi RS3 model be just weeks away? If you believe the internet scuttlebutt, then, yes.

If true, it is expected the RS3 would be powered by the 2.5 litre inline five cylinder from the TT RS. That means the hottest of Audi hatchbacks could be sending 250kW to the ground through a six speed manual gearbox, with performance figures likely to be rather rapid.

As the above rendering shows, the RS3 could also look pretty damn aggressive, too. Audi fans across the globe will have their fingers crossed that this is one rumour that does come true.

Hyundai ix35 officially unmasked

Hyundai ix35

Following AUSmotive’s exclusive and not so official reveal of the new Hyundai ix35 comes an official picture from Hyundai. Looks like the next three weeks are going to be full of pre-Frankfurt Motor Show releases as manufacturers compete for attention.

One thing is certain, the new ix35 is a damn sight better looking than the ungainly Tucson model it replaces. Hyundai has high hopes for the ix35, too, as it is the first model to reveal the company’s new ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language.

The ix35 will make a full public reveal at Frankfurt, before going on sale in early-mid 2010.

400bhp Audi TT RS by Sportec

Sportec Audi TT RS

If the regular 335bhp from the feisty five-cylinder engine in your Audi TT RS isn’t enough, Swiss tuning company, Sportec, can up the ante for you to 400bhp. For those of us who speak in kilowatts, that’s a leap from 250kW to 294kW. The Stage One tune increases torque by almost 100Nm, to around 540Nm.

Acceleration has improved, with the 0-100km/h down 0.4 seconds to a very tidy 4.2 seconds and, of course, the factory 250km/h speed limiter has been removed.

Road tests for the TT RS haven’t always been glowing endorsements, but, as the saying goes, Sportec have taken the “I’ve never met a horsepower I didn’t like” approach. Maybe that will work?

As it is Australian buyers will have to wait before they can judge the TT RS for themselves, with deliveries not due until early next year. Plenty of time to save for the relative loose change the Sportec tune will cost!

Citroën DS3 – it’s like a MINI, but French

Citroen DS3

You may remember the DS Inside Concept from earlier this year. Well, as it turns out, that was pretty much an exact preview of the new DS3 model which will be launched at, yep, you guessed it, the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

Back in February, the sizing, use of exterior colours and desire to create something fresh and different for the small car segment screamed of chasing MINI sales. Now, with more detail on the DS3 released, that target on the MINI brand has become larger with Citroën revealing plans for highly customisable options, including paint colours and interior trims. You know, just like MINI offers.

Naturally, competition is a good thing, so it will be interesting to see how MINI counters this new threat. I don’t think it will be by reducing their prices!

Due for release in the European spring next year the DS3 has evolved from Citroën’s “créative technologie” mantra. It will be the first model released from the company’s new DS line, which Citroën describes as being “distinctively styled, attention-grabbing models”.

Loads more after the jump, and, as always, if you want larger sized images, just knock yourself out by clicking on the pic you like and voila a wallpaper friendly 2000px super image will be all yours.

2010 Maserati GranCabrio

Maserati GranCabrio

It seems you’re nobody if you’re not having a new model reveal at Frankfurt next month, and Maserati certainly don’t want to miss out on the fun. They’ll be lifting the lid on their new GranCabrio model.

The GranCabrio is the first four seater rag top in the company’s history and is powered by a 4.7 litre V8, producing 323kW of power. No doubt the engine note inside the cabin, or should that be outside, will be sublime.

If the Maserati GranCabrio grabs your attention you’ll have a bit of wait ahead of you, it’s not due for customer deliveries until the second quarter of 2010. And that’s the European release, Australian customers will have to wait longer, as usual.

MINI Australia celebrates 50th with Camden and Mayfair

MINI 50th anniversary models - Camden & Mayfair

On Wednesday Mini turns 50, and to celebrate MINI Australia has just confirmed the availability of two special anniversary models. The MINI 50 Camden (on the left) and the MINI 50 Mayfair. The anniversary models will be available across the MINI coupé range, with Cooper, Cooper D and Cooper S engine options.

The special models are expected in Australia this November and manufacturer list pricing, excluding dealer and government fees, will start at $36,100 for the MINI Cooper 50 Camden, $38,750 for the Cooper D version and $43,900 for the Cooper S model. Pricing for the MINI 50 Mayfair models will be an additional $900 across the range.

As well as the unique features on offer with the Camden and Mayfair buyers can take full advantage of MINI’s extensive customisation options and are able to order cars to their preferred spec.

Justin Hocevar, National Manager MINI is pleased with the addition to the Australian model range, “The new 50th Anniversary models are a welcome addition to the MINI portfolio here in Australia. Not only do they celebrate a significant milestone for one of the world’s most iconic brands, they provide customers with unprecedented value.”

Pictured above the MINI 50 Camden is shown in a truly spectacular White Silver metallic, with the Mayfair in a less spectacular Hot Chocolate metallic. If those colours don’t take your fancy, the Camden can be ordered in Midnight Black metallic and Blue Horizon metallic, while the Mayfair can be yours in Midnight Black metallic or Pepper White.

Both will feature a new Harmon Kardon stereo system. The Camden will debut a new “Mission Control” on board computer/in car entertainment system, which, if I’ve read this right, will talk to the driver. The Mayfair makes do with extra driving lights.

Of course, both come with unique trim and interior options which are listed in the press release after the jump.
