BMW F32 4 Series Coupe spied for the first time

BMW 4 Series prototype

With the recent launch of the new BMW F30 3 Series it is timely that, less than a week later, we’re seeing a new 4 Series Coupé for the first time. While the F32 prototype is heavily disguised you can get a feel for its profile and overall shape.

BMW will be introducing 4 Series nomenclature in a bid to take the coupé and convertible models further upmarket from their saloon origins. The F32 coupé is still some time away with 2013 or 2014 being mentioned for the official launch.

As to be expected the 4 Series will run pretty much F30 3 Series drivetrains, although expect a few enhancements to justify any possible price increases.

Also to follow on the F3x platform are the F33 convertible, F34 Gran Turismo and F35 four door coupé.

Porsche 962 in Melbourne for Motorclassica

Porsche 962

The annual Motorclassica Concours d’Elegance and Classic Motor Show is being held in Melbourne this weekend. In fact the doors open this morning. We gave you a teaser for Motorclassica during our AIMS coverage.

Yesterday this stunning and genuinely classic Porsche 962 arrived in readiness for the show. The 962 dominated sportscar racing in the 1980s, claiming the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1986 and 1987, among many other titles. The Dauer 962 won Le Mans in 1994 as well.

Derek Bell is a five-time winner at Le Mans, his last two victories were at the wheel of the 962. After the break there’s two more photos and a short clip. We like the following text from the description of the video:

“Watched as this classic 962 was unloaded from a tray table truck. Once unloaded, Derek Bell strode over, jumped in, started her up and casually drove into the Royal Exhibition Building.”

It’s the eye of the driver

Lucas di Grassi

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

We’re sure that’s what Lucas di Grassi was singing to himself when he completed this installation lap with a camera mounted over one of his eyes.

His discomfort was our gain, for he gave us a view very few of us will ever get to experience—a driver’s eye view from the seat of a Formula 1 car.

Talking about his uniquely documented installation lap at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, di Grassi said, “I had to drive with only one eye open as the camera was blocking my other eye, quite tricky.”

See for yourself by watching the clip after the break.

Prodrive behind Countryman WRC for the road

MINI WRC

Back in January this year we gave you the scoop that MINI was planning a road-going version of its Countryman WRC. It would stand to reason that Prodrive would be the company to turn their racecar into a road car and that’s exactly what will be happening.

Dave Richards, Prodrive boss says the transformation makes sense, “Mini obviously has the Cooper and John Cooper Works brands and it will want to work out ways of harnessing this campaign, its rally heritage and those giant-killing acts of the 1960s through its road cars.”

While our tip that the road-going Countryman WRC could be on show at Frankfurt didn’t come off, a prototype version of the car does exist and will feature a unique widebody to set it apart from other Countryman models.

It currently has its engine boosted to 230bhp through the use of a Milltek exhaust system and a Superchips ECU reflash. Apparently the chase for more power is on and a larger turbo is under consideration.

We like where this is heading and look forward to learning more as the car’s development progresses.

Tanner Foust on the Focus RS500 at the Ring

US motoring identity and drift king Tanner Foust was lucky enough to be sent over to the Nürburgring and handed the keys to a Ford Focus RS500 and told to go and enjoy the Nordschleife.

In standard form the RS500 sends 350hp to its front wheels, but Foust says this car has been boosted for even more power. It’s bordering on insane to be honest.

With ingredients like that we have to say we’re a little disappointed with Tanner’s output in this clip. We wanted moar power, moar speed and moar thrills!

BMW F80 M3 gets serious

BMW F80 M3 prototype

Some great spy shots of the next-generation BMW M3 have emerged over at F30POST. They show the F80M in saloon form (there’s a coupé too) with some funky data gathering wheels on approach to the BMW M center in Nürburg. Of course, that means the car has been given a right seeing to on the Nordschleife as well.

Nobody is really offering any firm predictions on what engine the next M3 will feature. There’s been talk of a triple turbo six cylinder, as well as more conventional discussion about V8 power. We reckon they might go back to a six of some sort, although doubt the possibility of a V6; based on tradition more than anything else.

Word is the F80 M3 will hit the motor show circuit around 12 months from now, with a sales launch early-ish in 2013.

There’s a couple of extra pics and a some earlier video after the break. If you’d like to see more pics in larger sizing, then follow the source link below.

Veyron bashing McLaren F1 coming in 2014

2014 McLaren F1 rendering

Autocar brings word of a new Super Mac which they say will be faster than the all-conquering Bugatti Veyron. Testing has already begun for the successor to the iconic McLaren F1 road car.

Initial evaluation is said to have taken place on closed roads in Spain, with further developments to take place in Germany. Hot weather testing is likely to be undertaken in Bahrain.

Despite such lofty performance targets the ‘mega Mac’ only has an 800hp 5.0 litre V8 engine, according to the Autocar report. It will be rear wheel drive, as you would expect, and will also feature a 7-speed double clutch transmission. Performance predictions suggest the following numbers: 0–100km/h in 2.8s, 0–160km/h in 5.5s and 0–320km/h in 20s.

Apparently the ‘mega Mac’ will be “bigger, angrier and more functional looking” than the MP4-12C. As well as expected inclusions such as carbon-ceramic brakes, switchable ABS and traction control settings and a carbon fibre monocell, the new hypercar could also feature a data logger and in-built video camera to record track day experiences.

Sounds like it will be the super-mega-hypercar du jour when 2014 rolls around. It’s a good thing you’re getting plenty of notice, too. Just 500 will be built over a four year production run and you’ll need to pony up £1 million to call one your own.

VIDEO: BMW M5 review by Autocar

BMW M5 video review

They say three’s a crowd, but we’re guessing you won’t object to a third video review of the BMW M5. This time Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar is in front of the camera and it’s a good review to finish with as well. Sutcliffe is definitely able to find lots of nice things to say about the F10M—comparing its straight line acceleration to a Veyron, for example—but he’s also one of the few to be critical of the new super saloon. In particular, its steering. Pleasing to see he, too, has managed to discover the new M5 is quite adept at the art of drifting.

BMW M5 video review

Chris Harris has already given us a sample of his thoughts on the F10M. But that was before the production version was released. Now that the new BMW M5 is on the streets what does he think? He gives the M5 four key criteria which he says it must improve on to be better than the V10 powered E60 M5. Watch the video to see what they are, suffice to say Harris declares, “the F10 M5 is a car that rights all of its predecessors wrongs.”

The video is available after the break.

BMW F10 M5 video review

As you are aware the press launch for the new BMW M5 took place a little while back at the Ascari Race Resort in Spain. Like us you’ve probably never heard of the Totalcar team from Hungary before. However, if you spare a little over 7 minutes of your time to watch their video review of the F10M we’re guessing you will probably become fans.

Check out the clip after the break.

2011 Indian GP: Take a lap around the Buddh International Circuit

Buddh International Circuit

In less than two weeks from now we will be enjoying the first ever Indian Grand Prix. That means we have a new circuit to learn. The new track is called the Buddh International Circuit, in reference to its location 35-40km from the Delhi CBD.

In April we gave you a preview of the new track, but it’s now worth taking another look. After the break is a preview from Red Bull with Mark Webber doing the talking. Also included is a repeat of Karun Chandok’s preview of his home circuit.

2011 Korean Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Korean Grand Prix

After safely tucking away another world championship in Japan, Sebastian Vettel showed no mercy to his rivals by putting in a dominant performance on race day at the Korean Grand Prix. He was pretty happy about it too. It’s his 10th win for the year; third on the all time list. He’ll need to win the remaining three races to equal Michael Schumacher’s epic 2004 season, where he won 13 out of 18 races.

Of course, the first place for Vettel and third place for Mark Webber wrapped up consecutive constructors’ titles for Red Bull Racing. The team has courted controversy during its relatively short life span, but there’s no denying their effectiveness.

After the break you’ll see over 100 pictures from Yeongam. It’s not a surprise anymore to see just how many marbles the Pirelli tyres have spat out at F1 circuits this year, but it’s been illustrated very will in a few of the pics below.
