Jenson Button wins 2012 Belgian GP

Jenson Buttons wins 2012 Belgian Grand Prix

Jenson Button (McLaren) led from start to finish to cap off a surprisingly dominant weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix. But it was a calamitous start which was the real story of the race.

The drama began when Romain Grosjean (Lotus) was defending a move from Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) and in doing so the pair touched, sending Hamilton onto the grass and ultimately into the back of Grosjean. The two cars then went flying into the pack at La Source, the first corner hairpin, collecting Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and Sergio Perez (Sauber) on the way through.

Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber) was also contacted quite heavily by Hamilton, but he somehow managed to finish the race; albeit in P13, well below the expectations generated by his front row start.

It really was total chaos for a brief moment and we’re thankful to report no drivers were hurt. Fernando Alonso was especially lucky to escape unharmed as Grosjean’s car flew over the front of the Ferrari’s nose, close to Alonso’s head.

A Safety Car period of around four laps followed and Button made a clean getaway from the restart and that was that. Indeed, so dominant was Button he was able to complete the race with only one pit stop, the gap back to P2 sufficient to ensure he was able to rejoin the race without surrendering his lead.

Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) drove well to work his way into P2 after starting from P10 and he came in for his first tyre stop on lap 21. The German was able to complete the race on those tyres to collect a well earned podium finish.

Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus) promised a lot and while happy to finish the race in third place would have held higher ambitions.

After starting well down in P12, Australia’s Mark Webber (Red Bull) recovered well to collect the eight championship points offered for a sixth place finish. We’re not sure if a one-stop strategy was an option for him, but we saw from the first two drivers that it was the better option for the day.

With Alonso scoring no points the goal was to claim back as much of Fernando’s championship lead as possible. Mark managed to reclaim eight points back, but Vettel went better with 18 and in doing so leap frogged Webber into second place for the title hunt.

Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso) was as high as fifth early on in the race but slipped back to finish in P9. That matches his best F1 finish achieved in Melbourne. Crucially for Daniel his teammate, Jean-Eric Vergne, was one place ahead in P8.

Race stewards have a few incidents to sign off on after the race, including a possible unsafe release from Webber’s second pit stop. There was no damage done as Felipe Massa (Ferrari) dived in for his stop, so let’s hope sanity prevails there and Mark’s result is unaffected.

A provisional finishing order can be seen below, along with updated championship tables. If the stewards intervene and upset the apple cart we’ll be sure to update the figures below.

2012 Belgian GP: Qualifying report

2012 Belgian Grand Prix

Bright sunshine greeted the drivers for qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix. A welcome change after the first two free practice sessions were all but washed out due to heavy rain. And it was Jenson Button (McLaren, 1:47.573) who was a surprise pole winner. It was equally surprising to see Kamui Kobayashi (Sauber, 1:47.871) and Pastor Maldonado (Williams, 1:47.893) qualify in second and third places respectively.

Indeed, Button ended up dominating qualifying, setting the quickest time in Q2 and Q3, and he was second behind Maldonado who was quickest in Q1. It’s Button’s 50th race for McLaren this weekend and the first pole position he has claimed for the Woking-based team.

Kobayashi has registered his best ever qualifying result and, surprisingly, it’s also the best ever quali result for a Japanese driver. He’s a man going places and we expect his presence at the front of the grid will be sure to spice things up a little.

There were a few casualties along the way, as well. Nico Rosberg (Mercedes AMG) didn’t make it into Q2, while Sebastian Vettel just failed to make the cut for Q3.

A series of three grid penalties has ensured a minor reshuffle of positions and most notably Pastor Maldonado will now start from P5 after he was penalised three grid positions for impeding Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) in Q1. Mark Webber (Red Bull) qualified in P7, but drops five places to P12 for the race after he was forced into an unscheduled gearbox change. The same fate befell Rosberg who will now suffer the indignity of starting from P23 on the last row of the grid.

The finalised grid can be seen HERE and Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus) will take Maldonado’s place to start from P3.

Rounding out the results for the Aussies, Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso) will start from P16, alongside his teammate Jean-Eric Vergne who out qualified Ricciardo by almost two tenths.

A full transcript of the post-qualifying press conference can be read below, with thanks to the FIA.

Red Bull’s tunnel vision

David Coulthard drives RB7 through Lincoln Tunnel

Finally we can bring you the edited promo version of Red Bull Racing’s “American Vacation”. If you missed it last week David Coulthard was plonked in an RB7 and given licence to go crazy on the streets of New York and New Jersey.

It’s all in the name of promoting the Grand Prix of America, scheduled to make its F1 debut in June 2013.

If you’d like to watch a full lap of the 5.14km Port Imperial street circuit in Weehawken, NJ, you can do so HERE.

While watching this clip, cast your mind back to the nanny state promo the Victorian Government allowed for Mark Webber on the Bolte Bridge.

Victoria, you suck! New York, you rock!

Robert Kubica completes Fiesta RS WRC test

Robert Kubica

Finally we have some good news for fans of Robert Kubica with word emerging from Europe that he recently tested a Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

Apparently Kubica attended an official test session with the Ford World Rally Team, where Jari-Matti Latvala and Petter Solberg were also in attendance.

Ford’s Malcom Wilson was a bit coy only confirming, “We had a four-day development test at a circuit in France, that’s all there is to it. It was a private test and I’m not prepared to comment further.”

So, it’s all a bit hush hush it seems, but Autosport reckon they’ve had the rumour verified and is quoting their source as saying, “Robert drove the car, we know this. And he drove the car well. He has the big passion for rally.”

Whatever the future holds for Kubica we wish him well in his recovery and reckon it would be great to see him back in an F1 car again.

A lap of the new Austin Grand Prix circuit

Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas

The F1 mid-season slumber awakens in Belgium this weekend, but today we bring you an early preview of the new Circuit of the Americas track in Austin, Texas. It’s a computer-generated onboard lap with commentary from James Allen and Stephen Hood from Codemasters.

The 5.47km circuit makes its race debut on 18 November. It’ll be interesting to see if the latest Hermann Tilke track is as heavily criticised as some of his others.

VW rules out F1 introduction (again)

2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

You can’t have a Volkswagen is interested in F1 story without an official denial soon after the rumour emerges. You’ll recall the latest gossip suggested Volkswagen and Sauber were in discussions with a view to forming a partnership in 2014 or 2015.

We’re surprised it’s taken so long for the “we know nothing” party line to come out of VW HQ. This time it’s Stefan Moser, marketing and communication boss, who has been told to spoil the fun.

Speaking to Germany’s motorsport-magazin.com Moser has been quoted as saying: “Nothing has changed since our last statement. We are continuing to focus on the WRC. Entering formula one is not an issue for us right now.”

Killjoy.

David Coulthard lights up New York

Red Bull Racing visits New York City

David Coulthard and his Red Bull Racing colleagues recently stopped by New York for a little holiday. While there they managed to dust off a couple of 2011 title-winning RB7 showcars for a quick spin.

We have 11 images sourced from Red Bull along with a couple of teaser videos. A longer clip will be coming our way via the Red Bull Media House very soon.

In the meantime Leo Parente from Drive has done a fine job of giving us the skinny about Red Bull’s visit to NYC and New Jersey to promote the 2013 Grand Prix of America, or should that be 2014?

Newey expects engines to dominate from 2014

2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s design guru, reckons getting the best V6 turbo engine will be the key to success when the new regulations take force in 2014. Speaking to Autosport, Newey said the restrictions on aerodynamics are so tight that it could end up being a race for the best engine supplier.

“The chassis regs, aero wise, are a more restrictive version of what we have already,” Newey explained.

“The installation of the engine is obviously something that the teams will work on with their engine manufacturers. It remains to be seen whether someone comes up with something novel there and steals an advantage.

“That means the engine power unit itself, which is not only the internal combustion engine but also the various recovery systems bolted to it.

“It is possible that one manufacturer will do significantly better than the others, at which point you might end up with that manufacturer’s cars at the front of the grid.”

So, it’s not a lot different to last year or two, really, when Red Bull, thanks to Newey, had the best aero package allowing them to dominate the constructors’ championship and Sebastian Vettel to pick up a couple of drivers’ titles.

Renault are no mugs and Newey will be hoping they’re quick out of the blocks in 2014. Assuming Red Bull sticks with the French engine supplier, of course.

‘AMG F1’ to replace official Mercedes team?

2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

In 2014, when the new Concorde Agreement for Formula 1 teams begins, it could be the name of AMG F1 carrying the hopes of the three-pointed star, with no mention of Mercedes-Benz in the official title. That’s the word according to French magazine Auto Hebdo.

Mercedes is yet to sign the new Concorde Agreement and it’s believed they may be keen to put an exit strategy in place on the back of disappointing results. Mercedes-Benz returned to a full factory-backed team in 2010 after buying out BrawnGP at the end of the 2009 season. Despite BrawnGP coming off an unlikely season of dominance that year, Mercedes has claimed just one race win, the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix, in the 49 races that have followed.

The name of the manufacturer’s performance arm, AMG, was added to the team’s title late last year and it makes some sense for AMG to carry full naming rights from 2014 and beyond.

It’s also been reported that Mercedes is not entirely happy with the bribery scandal involving German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky and Bernie Ecclestone.

There’s been a suggestion that Mercedes may choose to focus on engineering behind the scenes, leaving the daily running of the F1 team to AMG and the current Brackley-based operation, lead by Ross Brawn.

Regardless of the decision on the team’s official title, Mercedes-Benz is still expected to continue its role as engine supplier. As well as its own team Mercedes currently supplies engines to McLaren and Force India.

Well this is a little embarrassing

Williams F1 driver Pastor Maldonado recently made an ass of himself in Caracas. He was supposed to perform 12 laps of the Fuerte Tiunas military parade ground in front of an estimated crowd of 20,000. Instead, he made a rookie error and lost grip on the slippery road surface and crashed his FW33, ensuring the hero’s homecoming ended up becoming a major embarrassment.

Maldonado now joins the Nick Heidfeld hall of shame. But unlike Heidfeld, at least Maldonado has a grand prix winner’s trophy to fall back on.

‘Rush’ scheduled for September 2013 premiere

Rush movie website title graphic

An official premiere date of 20 September 2013 has been announced for Ron Howard’s F1 movie Rush by Universal Pictures. A new website for the “big screen re-creation” has also been launched and outlines the big budget F1 flick like this:

The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

Four preview images have been included on the website and can be seen below, or check out the official site for larger versions.

We’re guessing the Australian release of Rush will take place after the 20 September 2013 world premiere. As soon as we learn more we’ll be sure to pass it on.

Grand Prix of America releases new logo

Grand Prix of America logo

At the end of June, when Sebastian Vettel appeared at the Grand Prix of America course in New Jersey, those paying attention may have noticed the Grand Prix of America logo. But if you missed never mind, because here it is.

In an official statement announcing the new logo organisers said: “After reviewing dozens of renderings, the Grand Prix of America group chose a blue-and-red logo that features a stylized Statue of Liberty crown over a checkered-flag helmet, anchored by a single star.”

More importantly, perhaps, the statement confidently declared: “The Formula One race will take place on the shores of the Hudson River in New Jersey in June, 2013.”

This follows earlier suggestions the race could be delayed until 2014.
