Demerit points set to be introduced for F1 drivers

2012 Belgian Grand Prix

As a further disincentive to ruining someone’s race weekend the FIA is set to debate the introduction of a demerit points system to F1 super licenses that could lead to race suspensions.

It will work much like the points system you have on your everyday driver’s licence. Points will be added for any incidents the driver is deemed at fault for. If any F1 driver accumulates 12 points in a 12 month period then he’ll be suspended for one race.

A majority of teams, but not all, have given their approval for the new penalty points scheme and it’s now up to the FIA to give it their imprimatur. It’s believed Lotus, Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Williams were the teams to withhold their support.

Under the system race stewards would have discretionary powers for adding points to a driver’s F1 licence, using a base guide to determine the severity of offence. For example, causing a serious accident may attract a three point penalty, while failing to maintain a proper distance behind a safety car could attract one point.

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa says he’s not overly concerned by the idea. “Drivers who are creating problems will suffer more than the others. What I did all my career was not be involved in this, so it is OK,” he said.

Chris Harris and the element of surprise

Chris Harris is a lucky bastard

Here’s your latest Chris Harris fix. Today he’s at the wheel of the highly desirable Audi R8 V10 Plus, the equally wantable 997 Porsche 911 Turbo S and giant killing Nissan GT-R that’s been warmed over by Litchfield.

He tracks the cars around Anglesey, down the Bruntingthorpe drag strip and on the road. Whatever order you think these cars will be ranked at the end of this comparison, think again. Most of all have fun watching the verdict being reached.

Although, the results of the flat out drag race will probably be exactly what you expect to see. And, wow!

Wörthersee 2013: Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabrio Austria

Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabrio Austria

The Mk6 Golf GTI has been given a final swansong by thirteen of Volkswagen’s most talented apprentices. Decked out in the red and white colours of the Austrian flag the Golf GTI Cabriolet Austria has the go to match its show.

The one-off creation is powered by the 2.0 turbocharged engine you expect to see in a GTI, but it’s been tuned to produce 245kW. Inside the Cabrio has been enhanced with a custom interior as well.

Wörthersee 2013: Volkswagen Amarok R-Style

Volkswagen Amarok R-Style Concept

We expect Volkswagen to jazz up a Golf GTI for Wörthersee, but it’s not everyday they go to town on the Amarok pick-up. But that’s exactly what they’ve done with the Amarok R-Style Concept. It’s had the works thrown at it, including having a 200kW/600Nm 3.0 litre V6 TDI stuffed under the bonnet.

Massive 22″ rims wrapped in 295/35/22 tyres complements those aggressive guards, which have been pumped out by 60mm. The front spoiler has been finished off with a carbon fibre diffuser, which ties in with the cover for the cargo area.

The carbon fibre theme continues inside too, where you’ll also find an 8″ touchscreen and 500w subwoofer in the GTI-inspired interior.

In truth the concept illustrations available after the break look better than the real image you see above. All in all though this would make an awesome workhorse for all those odd jobs you don’t really need to do.

Volkswagen Design Vision GTI promo video

Volkswagen Design Vision GTI

Now that the annual Wörthersee show is underway Volkswagen has released this short promo video of the 370kW V6 twin turbo Design Vision GTI. That’s nice and all, but we just want to see some real fair dinkum pics. Enough of the com-gen imagery.

VIDEO: Sideways on New Zealand’s Crown Range

Mad Mike drifting on the Crown Range in New Zealand

Kiwi drifter Mad Mike Whiddett has been let loose on one of the world’s great roads, The Crown Range, just out of Queenstown on the South Island. Red Bull has picked up the tab and Mazda has supplied to go fast bits.

Can’t say a competition-ready drift car would be our weapon of choice for a road like this, but with 750 horsepower on tap from this quad rotor RX-7, if given the chance, we think we could have ourselves a bloody good time!

VIDEO: Nissan GT-R v Swiss jet fighter

Nissan GT-R v Oris Swiss Hunter

Nissan Germany brings our attention to this drag race between a GT-R and a Swiss jet fighter. Okay, it may not be the most exciting video you will see today but it’s been well made, the scenery is superb and really, what’s not to like about two kilometers of empty runway to play with.

Just one more thing, we think this clip might be a bit of an ad for a watch, see if you can pick up on the very subtle clues.

BMW M235i to launch facial reconstruction

BMW M235i rendering

With the global success of the M135i you’d reckon BMW’s brief for the 2 Series version would be simple: Take the designers of the 1 Series out the back and give them a good flogging and send the engineers to the pub for some celebratory drinks. And it could just be that that is precisely the approach taken by BMW, if this rendering is anything to go by.

If the M235i does indeed end up looking something like the image above we expect BMW will do well to meet demand. It won’t be the prettiest coupé BMW has ever made, but what we see above is miles ahead of the M135i, regardless of how talented the 1 Series M-lite may be.

We just have to trust BMW that none of the engineering greatness of the M135i is lost by chopping off the rear doors and losing some cargo space. There’s no reason to even suggest for a moment that BMW will stuff that up.

After the break you can see a few spy shots and a video of the M235i in action at the Nürburgring, of course.

Safety Issues

Faster than any other boy has ever gone

If you break the speed limit you are the devil’s spawn. It’s true. You’ve seen the shocking road safety ads on TV, what other conclusion can one come to?

Regardless of which side of the needle you sit, it’s hard to deny that Australia’s state and territory governments have a fixation with speed cameras.

It’s reached a point now where governments around the country are drunk on the revenue speed cameras bring in. Let’s not bother with the debate over whether speed cameras are effective road safety devices or not, because the fact is they’re not going anywhere. Not while the millions and millions of dollars continue to roll in to the coffers of money hungry state/territory treasurers.

Don’t want to contribute to the revenue swill, don’t speed. It’s pretty simple.

So, back to the speed debate, then. For the let-me-drive-as-fast-as-I-want crowd the last bastion of sense was in the Northern Territory where, until 2007, you could actually could drive as fast as you wanted. Really.

Then, just like that, those silly Territorians introduced a speed limit like the rest of the country. It will save lives, they said. You know, the usual mantra. But it didn’t. Not in simple terms anyway.

Quoting an article from Fairfax Media, “In the six years since [NT ended unlimited speeds], more people have died on Northern Territory roads (307) than in the six years before the change (292).”

Yay, speeding doesn’t kill, so let’s lift the restrictions and do it like the Germans do and let us all drive like bats out of hell. Read any online debate over speed limits and within five comments some will say, “My experience on the German Autobahns suggests…”

It’s worth pointing that 40% of German Autobahns do have a mandated 130km/h speed limit and that remains the recommended speed on derestricted roads. But not for much longer if the German opposition SPD party has its way.

They want to end the days of derestricted Autobahns and introduce a blanket 120km/h limit. No formal policy has been formulated at this stage, but as reported by Autocar, SPD spokesman Sigmar Gabriel reckons statistics prove the road toll is lower on the restricted roads and that’s good enough for him.

Back in the day I would have been burning effigies of speed limit signs in a rage of self-importance. But I’m older now and find the fence a more comfortable place to be. I’ll let others fight it out. Ultimately, seeking increased speed limits is not that important. Respecting other road users is where it’s at kids.

Drive safely.

VIDEO: Max Reisböck, you rock!

Max Reisbock and the BMW 3 Series Touring

This is Max Reisböck. He’s a former BMW engineer and he created the first ever BMW station wagon, based on a wrecked E30 3 Series saloon. The reason for his handiwork? So he could take his daughter’s tricycle on family holidays.

It’s actually a very cool story and without it we may never have seen the 3 Series Touring. Thankfully, BMW has seen fit to document Max’s story with this short video.

We love Euro estate cars because they’re super-cool. And now we love Max Reisböck, because he’s cool too.

Mercedes wants to give everyone ‘The Finger’

2013 Bahrain Grand Prix

Mercedes F1 powerbroker Niki Lauda has confirmed the team is chasing the signature of three-time world champion Sebastian Vettel. Lauda, a triple world champion himself, says he’s merely following in the footsteps of former Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug.

“I continued what Haug began,” Lauda told Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

Dr Helmut Marko, the other Red Bull anti-hero—in these parts at least—understands Lauda’s motivation and said, “Niki should absolutely be trying to get Vettel.”

Would Vettel actually want to go to Mercedes in any case. He’s in the fortunate position, really, where he could write his own cheque for any team in pit lane, except for Ferrari perhaps.

And if Vettel did choose to represent his fatherland in a Silver Arrow we must presume it would be Nico Rosberg forced to look for a new gig. Mercedes having spent all that money on Lewis Hamilton and all that.

It’s a cut-throat world in Formula 1.

That said, Lewis and Sebastian in the same team; we’d like to see that. The fallout would be spectacular!

Wörthersee 2013: Design Vision GTI previewed

Volkswagen Design Vision GTI

Here’s your extreme Golf GTI. It’s a bit more extreme than we were expecting too. So far we’ve only got a handful of sketches to go on, but look at that body work! To go with the out there exterior styling Volkswagen has given the ‘Design Vision GTI’ a massive 370kW punch. 370kW; that’s 500 horsepower!

The grunt for this race-ready GTI is provided by a 3.0 litre V6 TSI engine with twin turbochargers. Peak torque is 560Nm (4000–6000rpm) and with its DSG transmission and all-wheel drive system Volkswagen reckons the Frankenstein GTI will knock off 100km/h in 3.9 seconds. Top speed is predicted to be 300km/h.

Inside the 20″ rims you’ll find large ceramic brakes (380mm front, 356mm rear) and red-painted calipers to add some bling. The tyre package is extreme too, for a GTI, running 235/35/20s at the front and 275/30/20s at the rear. The wheels are based on the Austin alloys found on the new Mk7 GTI and have had their spokes designed to help discharge heat from the brakes.

The flexibility of Volkswagen’s MQB platform has afforded the design team the opportunity to shorter the car by 15mm, while increasing its width by 71mm. With that comes increases in the track (57mm front, 63mm rear).

All sounds pretty good so far, we can’t wait to see more.
