David Coulthard is the 2014 Champion of Champions

David Coulthard, 2014 Race of Champions

David Coulthard is the Champion of Champions after taking out the singles event at the 2014 Race of Champions held in Barbados on the weekend.

The 43-year-old Scot defeated 20-year-old Pascal Wehrlein, DTM racer and Mercedes F1 reserve driver, in the final. Jamie Whincup was representing Australia, along with Mick Doohan, and made it to the final four. He was knocked out by Coulthard in the semis. Whincup caused an upset when he eliminated defending champion Romain Grosjean in the earlier rounds.

The Nations Cup event was taken out by Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Petter Solberg (Norway), representing Team Nordic. They defeated Team Scotland (David Coulthard and Susie Wolff) in the final.

This year the cars driven by the all-star cast included an Audi R8 LMS, Ariel Atom Cup, Volkswagen Polo RX (rallycross), Stadium Super Truck, KTM X-Bow and the ROC car.

Selected video highlights can be seen after the break.

Red Bull Racing take donuts to a whole new level

Red Bull Racing's 'Seven Star Spin'

No doubt spurred on by the minor controversy and official sanction following Sebastian Vettel’s post-race donuts at the Indian Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing has given the FIA a big f-you by sending David Coulthard to the to the helipad of the Burj al Arab hotel in Dubai to indulge in the art donutting.

Red Bull says their ‘Seven star spin’ was part of their world championship celebrations and we reckon this is one of their coolest stunts yet. The helipad is 210 metres above sea level and Coulthard had a 24 metre diameter to work within. We suspect his motivation not to stuff up was higher than his altitude.

More pics and video after the break.

David Coulthard: Make opportunities happen

“If you look at my career, I would say that I had speed but I didn’t have consistency. So, I would say I was good, but not good enough.”

With that quote from David Coulthard documentary maker Mario Muth takes us on a 30 minute journey of honesty and insight into the career of the likeable Scot who won 13 grands prix.

Muth has a wonderful ability to encourage his subjects to speak freely and with only audio from the interviewee it’s almost as if you’re in the room with them.

VIDEO: David Coulthard, the Isle of Man and the SLS AMG

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The combination of ex-Formula One driver, revered tarmac and Mercedes’ latest supercar is one well worth savouring. Indeed, Mercedes-Benz made a 3D film about the experience. You can watch the old-skool 2D version featuring David Coulthard after the jump. There’s also a mini making of documentary, too, which is well worth a look.

You might recall Tiff Needell from Fifth Gear tested the SLS on the day this film was being shot. If you’re a fan of the latest Mercedes Gullwing, then watch Tiff ripping it around the Isle of Man TT course once again.
