Volvo fantasy league – The video

Volvo C30 Polestar Concept

This video review of the Volvo C3 Polestar Performance Concept is a welcome complement to the text based feedback we got last month. Seeing the car move around the track and hearing its exhaust note bring a new dimension to the madness that is this car. Mike Duff from Autocar was the lucky one who got to throw the C30 around Volvo’s Gothenburg proving ground. It wasn’t long until he started throwing around words like “Evo” and “GT-R”. Meanwhile, here at AUSmotive HQ, we’ve started throwing around words like “build it Volvo” and “now”.

Oh, at idle that 400bhp five pot sounds a bit ordinary. But once the C30 is moving and the engine is snarling it sounds superb.

Volvo fantasy league

Volvo C30 Polestar concept

You know how those fantasy football league things work. You try and cram Rooney, Drogba and Torres up front, with Terry, Vidic and Vermaelen down back. In the midfield you somehow have to find the cash for Lampard, Fabregas and Gerrard. It’s a tough ask, to be sure, but Volvo have had a crack at doing the same thing with their C30 Polestar Concept.

You’ll remember the car first showed its bright blue face at the Gothenburg Motor Show last month. In case you missed it, up front the fireworks are provided by a 400bhp 2.5 litre turbo in line five cylinder. Yes, that’s right—four hundred horespower! Defence is bolstered by Brembo brakes and race-inspired Ohlins suspension. Mid-field distribution is handled by a specially tuned Haldex all-wheel drive system.

Sounds stark raving mad, doesn’t it. So how does it drive? Well, I’m glad you asked, because the Euro motoring press have just been handed the keys, pointed to a closed track and told to give that Swedish smurf a jolly good seeing to.

Autocar reckon: “On Volvo’s tight, cresty test track in Gothenburg it delivered an impressively lashed-down driving experience, with massive adhesion, telepathic steering and a neutral chassis balance that makes it easy to find the sweet spot between understeer and (mild) oversteer.”

Top Gear says: “It is fast. Worryingly fast. One of the very quickest small things we’ve ever driven. Polestar says the C30 recorded a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds… and that was going easy on the transmission. They reckon a full-bore test would see it go close to four seconds flat. It’ll lap Volvo’s test track quicker than an Evo X… and within a few seconds of Volvo’s C30 touring car.”

Impressive. It’s not all fun and games though with reports suggesting the car is a little off production standard. Which is possibly why we may never see this Concept make it into Volvo showrooms. As a vehicle to announce the Polestar brand as Volvo’s in-house tuning specialist, though, the C30 Polsetar Concept is kicking goals from all over the park.

There’s a new video after the break, too, which is pretty much the same as the one already posted here, but with English sub-titles for the Swedish interviewees.

Crash test dummy

Volvo S60

Sometimes you just shouldn’t get out of bed in the morning. That was probably the conclusion Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Cars, came to after a demonstration featuring the new S60 saloon went a little bit pear shaped.

Assembled media and onlookers were supposed to see how the svelte looking S60 could avoid a rear end accident thanks to its collision warning system. As you can see from the image above things didn’t quite go to plan. Fortunately there was only a crash test dummy at the wheel of the car at the time of the 35km/h impact.

You can see a video of the incident below and listen to a red-faced Broberg explain what went wrong. If you can speak Swedish you might even understand him. (As of Monday 10 May the video has been removed from YouTube, an animated GIF below shows what happened). Apparently a battery failed causing the system to remain inactive. Volvo say had a human been at the wheel of the car they would have realised the system failure and had time to take evasive action.

[via World Car Fans]

UPDATE 10 May: It would seem Volvo are keen on removing footage of this oops crash from the interwebz. For now, a new video can be seen at the end of this article sourced from a Swedish news report, which starts off explaining how the system should work.

VIDEO: Volvo C30 Polestar Performance Concept

Volve C30 Polestar

Following today’s earlier post about the Volvo C30 Polestar Performance Concept comes this brief YouTube clip (see below). Sadly there is no driving footage showcasing just how effective this car and its 300kW+ could be.

So that means its interviews and polite press stuff, and unfortunately most of the interviews are in Swedish. However, there is one sound bite in English available that reveals we could be seeing more of the Polestar brand from Volvo in the future. Based on what we’ve seen today this could be a very good thing indeed.

[Thanks to Jason for the tip]

Volvo C30 Polestar Performance Concept

Volvo C30 Polestar

Three hundred kilowatts plus… Five hundred and ten Newton metres of torque… Haldex all-wheel drive… Yeah, I want one too!

Whichever way you look at Volvo’s slightly oddball C30 those numbers are massive. The power comes courtesy of Polestar Performance who are the outfit behind Volvo’s Swedish Touring Car Team. The theory behind the car is to see what happens when a bunch race engineers shift their focus from the track to the road.

Further to those highlight figures at the start, the C30 Polestar Performance Concept also includes a larger turbo, uprated pistons and conrods, as well as a revised camshaft. Keeping the Haldex naysays partially at bay is the news that mechanical diffs from Quaife can be found at the front and rear. Ohlins suspension and a revised steering rack help liven up handling. Bright blue paint and some 19″ BBS wheels help set the car off very nicely. Even the body kit looks the business (from this photo at least). Braking is helped along with a performance Brembo package featuring six-pot calipers and 380mm rotors up front, with a four-pot 330mm combo at the rear.

The C30 Polestar Performance Concept is currently on show at the Gothenburg Motor Show. Volvo’s press release after the break.

Volvo’s naughty teaser

Volvo naughty teaser

In the build up this week’s Geneva Auto Salon Volvo have released a couple of short teaser clips on YouTube (see below). They promise something naughty is on its way. If you follow their naughty.volvocars.com URL you end up at a special website based on the company’s all new S60 saloon.

This is the product Volvo will use to take on BMW’s almighty 3 Series. So, does this naughty tag mean we are about to see a new piping hot S60 R? And if we do, will it really live up to its name, or will this be a triumph of marketing over substance?

Looking at the YouTube clips one would hope we’re looking at a win to the engineering department, because the marketing department hasn’t exactly delivered spine tingling teasers.

New vehicle sales report – December 2009

FCAI banner

According to official VFACTS figures released earlier today new vehicle sales in Australia for 2009 reached 937,328, an overall drop of 7.4% compared to 2008.

November’s cracking results showed the motor industry was well on the way to financial recovery and  December followed suit registering 88,708 sales. Which sets a new record for the month.

FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar acknowledged the role of the Federal Government’s tax incentives for businesses in returning better than expected yearly figures, “The final outcome for the year has surpassed the industry’s original expectations by some 57,000 vehicles and a significant proportion of this additional volume can be attributed to the tax break.”

Toyota (200,191), Holden (119,658) and Ford (96,501) were the top three selling marques. Toyota’s stranglehold on top spot looks very secure, despite the highest selling car in Australia for 2009 being the Holden Commodore (44,387). The Corolla (39,013) and HiLux (38,457) rounded out the top three selling models nationwide.

Other notable performers were Audi, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen. But it seems most manufacturers have a positive spin to sell and a raft of press releases to that affect follow this article.

Audi, intent on chasing BMW for the top selling prestige marque, concluded 2009 with their fifth year of growth. Impressively, the German brand bettered last year’s record by over 20% while recording 11,310 sales. A perfect end to the local career of Audi Australia’s managing director, Joerg Hofmann. The hard task master will be returning home to Germany at the end of this month—see carsales interview from December 2009.

Mitsubishi have put the corpse of the Magna well behind it, achieving best ever annual sales for the Lancer (21,362) and Triton (18,182).

Volkswagen improved on its 2008 record year by selling over 30,000 vehicles for the first time under the Volkswagen Group Australia banner.

VIDEO: 2010 Volvo S60

2010 Volvo S60

Late last year Volvo released a couple of still images of their new S60 saloon, which closely resembled the S60 Concept. Over the new year Volvo released a teaser video of the S60, first to subscribers on Facebook, then to the broader public on YouTube. You can see the clip in full after the jump.

The S60 further pushes Volvo away from their once familiar boxy styling. With curves aplenty the S60 cuts a nice profile, but overall judgment might be best left until seeing the car for real.

Volvo’s 3 Series/A4 rival will be making its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. S60 production will commence in the middle of the year at the Volvo Cars’ plant in Ghent, Belgium. Australian deliveries are scheduled for late 2010.

Sheer Swedish pleasure

2010 Volvo S60

Volvo reckon this is the car to make BMW’s 3 Series shake in its boots. This car, of course, is the new Volvo S60 and it is due for public release at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Despite the reveal being some four months away, this hasn’t stopped those eager Swedes from releasing two new images of the car in a production-ready state.

“The all-new Volvo S60 is sculpted to move you. It looks and drives like no other Volvo before and the car’s technology will help you to be safer and more confident behind the wheel,” says Stephen Odell, President and CEO at Volvo Cars.

As is the norm, styling cues from the S60 concept are clear to see, but things are a bit more reserved in sheet metal form. With just a side profile pic and a three-quarter view from the front (see below) to go on, it would appear that Volvo has left something up their sleeves for the rear styling.

Although, it looks like Car might have spoiled the party there with their comgen images published last month. The front view is very similar to Volvo’s official pic, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt on the rear view, too.

“The customers in this segment want emotional appeal, sporty design and dynamic driving properties. The S60 has it all. We are convinced that it will be one of the strongest contenders around,” says Stephen Odell.

Never mind the emotional appeal, Volvo’s safety conscious image will get a big lift from the pedestrian detection system which will debut on the S60. If some idiot punter isn’t paying attention and walks out in front of you while you’re busy getting the kids in the back to quieten down the S60 can apply full braking force to save the day.

Volvo Australia have confirmed the S60 will be on local shores in the latter stages of 2010.

Targa Tasmania 2009 – The winners

Targa Tasmania 2009

Tony Quinn (QLD) and Naomi Tillett (SA) in a 2008 Nissan GT-R have won this year’s Targa Tasmania. Quinn was at the pointy end of the field throughout the event, but he faced an eight second deficit to the 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera of Kevin Weeks (SA) leading into the final day. And what a drama filled day it proved to be.

The cool and wet conditions which faced the drivers meant it was a case of finding that balance between pushing hard and simply staying on the black stuff.

The first stage of Leg 5, TS35 ‘Strahan’, was a 33.3km long stretch of unforgiving slippery tarmac. And with the start point on the edge of the town itself, drivers were given little chance to work much needed heat into their tyres and brakes.

Quinn fought desperately hard in the heavy GT-R and was 11 seconds faster than Weeks. The ball was now in Weeks’ court and he attempted to wrestle back the lead on the following 6.4km ‘Queenstown’ stage. The stage begins with a tight and twisty climb out of the mining town, before opening up into a frighteningly quick downhill section. It was here that the result of the rally was decided when Weeks lost control and flew off the bitumen into the roadside scrub and bushes.

It was a savage incident and Weeks and navigator Rebecca Crunkhorn were airlifted to Hobart General Hospital. Fortunately, both suffered little more than bruised pride, Crunkhorn was released later that day, but Weeks remained in hospital overnight with suspected rib injuries. The South Australian is expected to make a speedy recovery.

Local competitors Jason and John White, also in a Lamborghini Gallardo were now in second place. For the previous four days they formed part of a very tight leaderboard, but mechanical gremlins suffered by the Lambo on the final few stages meant that Tony Quinn would claim a six minute winning margin. The largest in the event’s 18 year history.

Quinn and Weeks have both come very close to winning Targa Tasmania in the past. Both are likeable characters and either driver would have proved to be a popular winner. Speaking at the post-rally function the following day “Quinny” was gracious in victory and expressed heartfelt thanks to the numerous well wishes and support he and navigator Naomi Tillet had received.

Targa Tasmania is a gruelling event, extremely tough on cars and a fierce mental test of driver and navigator, anyone who thinks Quinn won this event simply because he was driving a GT-R is kidding themselves.

It’s a Volvo Wazza, but not as we know it

Volv0 V70 V8 powered ute

Stone the flamin’ crows have you seen what them Swedish blokes have gone and done? They’ve sent some backpackers down under and nicked our way of life.

We’re not pulling anyone’s leg here, these are pics of a V8 powered Volvo ute. Externally, there’s equal parts Commodore and Falcon, ensuring the Swede in wolf’s clothing looks the part. The V8 donk makes certain she has as much go as she does show.

Okay, it turns out that someone is pulling our legs. That someone is Bo Zolland of VizualTech, who is the bloke responsible for these Photoshop creations. Top work Bo, these utes look great. You can almost see them doing some circle work at the Deni Ute Muster. And, that, is probably the best compliment an Aussie can bestow on a ute. True dinks!

Check out more of Bo’s creations after the jump.
