Subaru Australia introduces offline BRZ sales option

Subaru BRZ

Subaru Australia has kicked off the new year by allowing consumers to officially buy a BRZ sportscar from their local bricks and mortar dealership.

Until 1 January 2014 BRZ sales had been handled exclusively online, mainly due to limited supply from Japan. Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, explains that’s now a thing of the past, although the option to buy online will remain.

“Production efficiencies at Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars, have presented this opportunity to expand BRZ sales into our retail network,” Senior said. “It’s great for our customers, because they have the choice of buying online at a driveaway price, or using the more traditional dealer method.”

A total of 1800 BRZs have already been sold by Subaru Australia.

2013 national road toll falls by 8 per cent

The headline stat from the 2013 national road toll is promising news showing fatalities fell by 8 per cent. New South Wales and Victoria registered record low numbers, with South Australia and Tasmania the only jurisdictions to record an increase compared with 2012 numbers.

A total of 1193 road users were killed on Australian roads last year, down from 1298 in 2012. While the drop in the headline figure is encouraging a closer look at the stats shows 14 cyclists were killed in 2013, twice as many as 2012. Also, older road users registered an increase in fatalities.

Speaking to ABC’s AM program Professor Max Cameron from the Monash University Accident Research Centre said consideration needed to be given to the speed limit on the country’s rural roads.

“Our analysis has clearly shown that on our traditional Australian undivided roads that the speed limits are too high,” Cameron said. “The idea of travelling at 100km/h on our poor quality rural roads is really not justified on any grounds.

“The analysis suggests that it should be speed limits of no more than 90km/h, and preferably around 80km/h.”

While acknowledging Cameron is speaking from a more informed position than myself, I would have to question what the outcome of a 20% reduction in the speed limit on country road’s would have on driver fatigue.

Australia is a big country and we’re used to covering long distances on the road. It would take a massive cultural shift for road users to embrace such a measure as Cameron proposes.

Despite the increase in representation of cyclists in the road toll Sean Sampson from the Amy Gillett Foundation says there is ongoing discussions with state and territory governments to broaden the awareness of road safety for cyclists.

“Queensland have announced they will be having a trial of minimum overtaking distance,” Sampson said. “Tasmania in the last couple of days have said that they’ve got a strong interest in looking at the parameters of implementing their own trial. And there’s an inquiry in the ACT as well.”

ACT Policing Traffic Operations Officer in Charge, Station Sergeant Rod Anderson, sums it up best: “There is no magic wand for preventing tragic deaths on our roads. At the end of the day it all comes down to driver attitudes behind the wheel.”

Porsche talks us through the 2014 LMP1 regs

Porsche 919 hybrid event

Mark Webber’s racing career doesn’t resume in earnest until late April when the 6 Hours of Silverstone takes place. That gives him plenty of time to get a handle on the LMP1 regulations for the 2014 WEC season.

That job a little easier for Mark, and the rest of us, with this brief video featuring Porsche’s Alexander Hitzinger, Director of Engineering LMP1.

Porsche has already let slip the 919 hybrid will feature a four-cylinder petrol engine, but they’re yet to confirm the approach to be taken with the Energy Recovery Systems. Hitzinger explains the options available.

VIDEO: Episode 3 of Project Binky

Project Binky

Bad Obsession Motorsport updated us with Episode 3 of Project Binky on Christmas Day. As you know we’ve been enjoying a leisurely festive break as far as regular updates to AUSmotive are concerned, so a few days late here’s your chance to see how things are progressing in this very challenging, but very cool project.

This installment is all about fitting the rear suspension and sub-frame from the donor Celica GT4 into the tiny Austin Mini. If you’ve watched the first couple of episodes and wondered if these guys are making the challenge of merging these two cars together look harder than it really is, then this ep should put things right. What a ball ache!

Thankfully the lads are doing a sterling job and we can’t wait to see the end result.

AUSmotive’s summer road trip

AUSmotive's summer road trip

I spent Christmas with family in Adelaide and figured it was a good opportunity to embark on long road trip from my home in Canberra with the goal of taking in some of the best driving roads Australia has to offer. Most I had driven before, some I hadn’t, regardless I was looking forward to some quality seat time while being immersed in hot hatch heaven!

Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4 revealed

Lamborghini Huracan

Lamborghini has taken the wraps off its Gallardo replacement, the Cabrera. Except it’s not called the Cabrera at all, it’s been named the Huracan.

As is customary, Huracan is named after a bull, this one fought in Spain back in 1879 and apparently he took no crap from those poncey guys waving capes. And with 448kW (610hp) at 8250rpm and 560Nm at 6500rpm you won’t be easily pushed around either.

Coupled to a new 7-speed dual clutch transmission (Lamborghini Doppia Frizione or LDF) and an all-wheel drive system the Huracan brushes off 100km/h in only 3.2 seconds. The double century is knocked off in 9.9 seconds and it has a top speed of 325km/h.

A combination of carbon fibre and aluminium has been used to form the Huracan’s “hybrid chassis” helping to keep the its dry weight to 1422kg. Not superlight by any means, but a power-to-weight ratio of 2.33kg/hp is pretty handy.

The look of the latest beast from Sant’Agata is very much inspired by the outgoing Gallardo. That’s no bad thing as the Gallardo not only looked fantastic—it still looks great today in fact—but it is also Lambo’s highest ever selling model, with more than 14,000 finding homes.

The Huracan will make its full public debut at the Geneva Motorshow in March. Before then, though, it will be shown to select clientele at a series of invite-only preview events.

When the Huracan comes to Australia in the second half of next year it’s expected to be priced from around $430,000. That’s a drop in price of over $100,000 compared with the top-selling Gallardo.

McLaren to take rain check on wipers

McLaren P1

Those clever clogs in labcoats at McLaren have been busy developing windscreen that will make traditional wipers obsolete according to a report in The Sunday Times. Apparently the special screen will use high-frequency soundwaves to repel water, bugs and other debris.

Expect to see the technology on McLaren’s road cars in 2015, or thereabouts.

All very clever stuff, of course, but do the humble windscreen wipers really place such a demand on a car’s electrical systems to warrant such a measure?

BMW M7 coming to a freeway near you?

BMW 7 Series

Talk of a hitherto unrealised BMW M7 is not new, and while M GmbH boss Albert Biermann would like to make it so, we don’t think you should hold your breath.

“I would love to compete in this area of the market,” Biermann told Autocar. “The money is just there to pick up.”

Despite his frank admission that there is a willing market for the M7 it doesn’t appear to be part of any confirmed budgetary allocation. “There’s so many nice things you could do with unlimited money,” added Biermann.

For now buyers wanting a go-fast 7er have to turn to the Alpina B7. Although, Biermann points out you shouldn’t go looking there to find an M7 recipe. “An M7 would be a much different proposition to the B7,” he said.

It remains a mystery to us as to why BMW has allowed Audi and Mercedes-Benz to make merry with their S and AMG bahnstormers.

MINI John Cooper Works Concept previewed

2014 MINI JCW Concept

MINI brings an early Christmas present for fans of its John Cooper Works range by previewing a new concept model, based on the F56 hatch, which will be on display at the Detroit Auto Show next month.

There’s no technical details yet, so we don’t know what benefits the introduction of a 2.0 litre turbo engine will bring to the next-gen JCW. It should be good! We do know the car has new 18″ wheels, is finished off in Bright Highlands Grey paint and has too many red highlights, which makes the car looks a bit fussy.

But consider our interest piqued. We’re very keen to learn more in January, after we’ve imbibed too much festive spirit.

Jaguar plays chicken with Mercedes

Jaguar v Mercedes

Have you seen the Mercedes-Benz chicken ad? It’s pretty good. You see a chicken like to keep its head still, even when its body is being moved around. Mercedes figured that was a good way to illustrate the benefits of its Magic Body Control which “ensures optimum driving comfort”.

Jaguar thought that was good, too, but also felt they could go one better illustrating the benefits of cat-like reflexes.

You can watch both of the ads are below, after the break. Watch them both, have a chuckle, then let us know what you think.
